Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

He's always going to have money earmarked for potentially special talents, and he's building a potentially very good English core as well with Ramsey, Wilshere, Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain (which would've been a potentially great spine if he had gotten Smalling and Jones along with it, both players he showed interest in). Then there's possibly Jenkinson and Gibbs for the fullbacks, shows he sees some logic in having a British spine nowadays.

It doesn't get in the way of him signing people like Jagielka, he'll sign them (or more likely, won't) regardless of this.

EDIT: British, I obviously meant British.

What it does do though is pretty much guarantee they're out of the running for Mata. And its a strange one really as a few weeks ago Oxlade's dad was saying nobody had contacted him yet but he really hopes Arsenal sign him, looked like a come and get me plea

Ramsey is Welsh, and I'm not sure I totally agree with your opening line.

Excellent. I'm rather pleased with this piece of business considering United got one up on us with Smalling and Jones, so it's good to see we can still sign wanted players. But really this is only a luxury signing ATM - if we sort out an established midfielder (unlikely) and/or an established CB then I'll be happy with our 'ins' over the summer.

Though maybe we aren't going to get the permit for Ryo?

Would also be nice to flog some more of the dead-wood too.

A few clubs have been after AOC for a while now... Apparently at least.

Seems bizarre that you're 'rather pleased with this' yet admit that it's 'only a luxury signing' and that it's 'unlikely' that Wenger will sign the players the club actually needs.

Since you also stand to lose, possibly, one or both of Nasri and Fabregas, isn't it hard to be pleased about this kind of signing right now? It's not what you need to challenge for the PL, which should be absolutely paramount.

I'm pleased that we've signed someone that was also wanted by other top PL sides. Taken in isolation what's not pleasing about that?

Like I said, if we sort out other areas and even flog a player or three then I'll be really happy with our dealings.

Why would you take it 'in isolation' though?

Take it in context - all your rivals are spending big, and making mostly intelligent purchases that suit the needs of their team.

This is the comment at the end of that page:

"Great signing, now Cahil & Baines to follow. The PL title will be in @Arsenal arms."

You're making it sound like half the league wanted to sign this lad. There was a lot of speculation where he'd go during spring, but it's been fairly quiet (from what I've seen) during summer, so which teams actually tried to sign him? I can't imagine many clubs wanting to pay what you've just paid for him really, so in reality you didn't really beat anyone.

Who else wanted him?

United were interested apparently... Then again we're linked with everybody so who knows.

Anyway, this signing doesnt matter for Arsenal. He looks like a bonus. Wenger still has time to sort out other positions so we shall see what he does.

We signed Young instead

What about if that 2 or 3 is Cesc & Nasri?

Interesting detail on Oxlade-Chamberlain is that Man Utd asked to be kept informed but were not willing to pay £12m. #mufc #saintsfc #arsenal

Wengers next signing is going to be a very promising fetus. A quick pacy little fella that kinda looks like a mushy bean.

I don't see where Oxlade-Chamberlain would fit into our squad, would be 12 mil that could be spent on a CM.

He probably could've been a centre mid, it's not like we're averse to playing a dribbling playmaker in there with Anderson and Giggs playing that role in the past few years and now Cleverley doing the same.

Why would you want to when he is clearly a winger?

And before you say Giggs, he could never and would never have played consistantly as a CM in his early 20's.

Well...

He sees himself as a c mid player. He's played there through the ranks and has only played wide for the first team. The initial fee wouldn't be £12m, more a down payment and then instalments depending on reaching various milestones.

I know very little of the lad, I've essentially not even seen him play because I barely noticed him in the Cup game, but that doesn't sound like someone who's 'clearly a winger'.

I wouldn't say Giggs but I would say Anderson, who played wide in an attacking trident for both Gremio and Porto I think. And Cleverley had done the same for Wigan and Watford.

So we have Giggs, Anderson and Cleverley playing this role you speak of. 3 players. So back to the question, where in the squad would he fit? Having 3 players already for a certain role would suggest theres not really space for him

I wasn't really addressing that point more addressing the roles he can play, to be honest. That said we saw both Anderson and Cleverley play very well together just yesterday, we've seen Anderson and Giggs play together well in pre-season and I wouldn't be too shocked to see that sometime this year, Giggs-Cleverley too...so it's not like you can't fit them all in despite having similar core traits.

Again though, I have no idea what Chamberlain's like.

He could also be the new Jermaine Pennant

Or even Jeffers..

Interesting deal. Has the potential, but why would they buy yet another young winger with a potential? It's not like there's shortage of options there. On the other hand in defense... :D

Happy with the deal.

Maybe with Bendter going out, he is planning to use Walcott as a striker and use this lad on the right.

Lots of money to pay for a lad who's been plying his trade in League 1. Didn't really have much influence in the game against United either I don't think. Most of the top clubs where accredited with an interest at one time or another so he must be a good prospect but its unlikely he's going to be ready for 1st team Prem football anytime soon.

Wenger has lost the plot. There are only two managers in the League who can plan and build strategically. Wenger and Fergie.

To build strategically you need short term, medium and long terms plans/products=players etc. Anyone one who does business planning will know how to do this. No brainer really.

"Prof" Wenger seems to be only building long term products and hoping they will come in fruition in time. A very high risk approach. It may only works in a lab since there will be disruptive forces in real world/life like Man City or Chelski.

A realistic or more pragmatic approach is the one undertaken by Fergie -- of short (older players) , medium (Rooney, Young etc) and longer term (Cleverley's of the world).

This is how you build consistency of results with products with limited shelf lives. Feck knows what Wenger is doing! Clearly he is thinking more like an economist where there are lots of assumptions and a controlled environment as opposed to a business person who takes a more pragmatic approach.

Gooners must be screaming their heads off inside a padded room by now.

Well if you can't imagine it then I must be wrong.

He was heavily linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and United (maybe just paper talk though?) for a while and I think we jumped the gun and had both clubs comitted to ironing out a deal early on.

Really? The part of your team that needs immediate enforcement is defense and you have not signed anyone yet. You have been linked to three but are not willing to spend more than £13-15m on any of them. You don't look like you are going to sell anyone other than Nasri to raise money for transfers either. We all know Cesc is going to be an Arsenal player for at least another season.

Great signing for Arsenal. Now that they lose Nasri I was almost certain Le Arse won't contend for the title this year, but with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain they are back to beeing one of the favourites.

Ah? Favorites? Sarcasm?
