Alderweireld to Spurs (confirmed)

How can they 'buy' a player whose loan-contract with them has expired, who has signed no further agreement with them and who is now under contract with Spurs?

S'hampton had a 'buy option' contract with AM, not the player. All they can do now is sue AM for alleged breach of contract, but this doesn't involve Spurs and can't change the player's new contract.
Hmm.. you have a point. Unless Atletico had no right to refusal in a buy clause then i don't think Southampton have a case here.

Regardless, Athletico are the ones in trouble. Even if Athletico said yes, the player could simply say no and then Athletico could do a deal with them.

Look, buy out clauses entirely depend on language used in those contracts. It could very well be that Aldereweild would become automatically a Southampton player IF Atletico don't pay them off until a certain date. Which would mean Spurs could very well have an agreement with the player but Soton have the licence of the player...

Looks like Southampton are missing out after all.

Great signing for Spurs if it happens. On paper Alderweireld + Vertonghen infront of Lloris sounds solid.

Welp, thought Southampton would have done something to block the transfer to keep him.

I don't think Southampton can do much if the player prefers a move to Spurs, so even if they were right about Atletico paying the clause too late, the player can still decide against a permanent move to Saints himself. Alderweireld probably told Koeman he preferred to stay in stead of going back to Atletico to sit on the bench, but that was also probably before the interest from Spurs.

Good signing for Spurs. Vertonghen and Alderweireld formed a very good partnership at Ajax.

Wasn't good enough at Atletico, but is a typical Spurs player. Good signing for them.

So if I understand it correctly

Souton had Alderweireld on loan with an option to buy him for £6.8m and Atlético had the option to cancel that clause if they paid £1.5m to Souton before a certain date.

Souton say Atlético paid it too late so it couldn't have cancelled the option they had. Which means Atlético could not have sold Alderweireld before first offering him to Souton. Which they didn't because they allowed the player to talk to spurs and sold him for £11.8.

Very weird situation but I think Souton could definitley appeal this in court. If the player doesn't want to stay at Souton I don't think the transfer can be reversed and I also think spurs have done nothing wrong. But Atlético could be infringed with contract breach that have directly harmed Souton in signing a player they had secured an option for. Probably they will be fined to compensate Souton or something.

Unless Alderweireld had already agreed terms with Souton on signing that loan deal, the option being basically that Souton could just make the loan permanent under the agreed upon terms with player and club. In that case I think Alderweireld is also in contract breach and the transfer could be reversed under the asumption that it could never have been legal because if Souton uses their right to sign the player he'd be their player and not Atléticos and they never had the right to sell him nor did Alderweireld to sign at another club because he'd already be under contract.

Should be a good signing for Spurs, a bit of a sideways move for the player though.

Actually think this won't be a great signing for Spurs but then again, I was somewhat worried about Lamela when they signed him so I could be wrong!

Good signing, I really rate this guy. Spurs better be hoping they don't have another Lovern on their hands.

Such a meh signing. Lovren MK II. Fonte made him look better than he actually is. He's shite for Belgium but then again, who isn't?

Is it just me or are there certain players on this earth that are destined for only Spurs? Bentaleb,Chadli,Alderweireld etc

Yea the average ones that lack real skill and ambition, custom made for a club like Tottenham.

They are actually good players, just Spurs good... i actually expected Vertonghen to be World Class by now.

No they really aren't I can't stand the sight of Chadli for example and I'am Belgian and don't have any reason whatsoever to not like him except the fact that he is utter garbage and I rather not see him on the pitch if my nat team is playing.

Chadli scored 13 goals for us last season .... so perhaps not quite as "garbage" as you claim.

Hasn't been a backup since e signed him. First choice in his, first season and the last one. Not sure about moyes one.

Was a backup player last season, our first team players just happened to under perform and get injured.

He was definitely first choice for the majority of the season. He started as a backup yes, but as the season went on was being played on merit not because our first choice players were injured i.e.was a starter.

He's a good signing for Spurs. His problem at Atletico was he made a couple of silly mistakes and you can't make mistakes in a team that had the best defense in Europe at the time or you'll stick out like a sore thumb. Needless to say he rarely got a chance after that and was shipped off to Southampton where he showed his true quality. This article from last season shows his effectiveness at Southampton.

Toby Alderweireld impressing for Southampton

Alderweireld has certainly proved to be a man since his arrival in the Premier League. The transition has been seamless with Koeman claiming his new signing has looked like he’s been in England for years. It’s also made something of a mockery of Liverpool’s decision to pay £20million for his predecessor Dejan Lovren.

Alderweireld has hit more than 80 accurate long passes so far this season, placing him among the top-six outfield players in the Premier League – just behind Steven Gerrard and Cesc Fabregas on that score. His distribution from deep has developed into an important asset for Koeman’s Southampton.

Such is his composure on the ball, Alderweireld has even been required to step into midfield at various points during Southampton’s recent injury crisis. That’s what was needed in the home game against Manchester City when Saints lost Morgan Schneiderlin at the midway point and it was telling that all three City goals came after Alderweireld was moved from the centre of defence.

Prior to that, Southampton had conceded only three goals in the seven-and-a-half games he’d played at the back, including five consecutive home wins. Indeed, there were six clean sheets in Alderweireld’s first eight appearances and he’s succeeded in acting as an ideal foil for assured skipper Jose Fonte.

His positional sense has seen him make more blocks than any Southampton player, while he has also made more clearances – some of them off the goal-line – per 90 minutes than any of his team-mates. With the pace to extricate himself from difficulty when needed, it’s a formidable combination and there’s a sense that Koeman has got hold of his man at the perfect moment.

he's good "2nd" CB, he looked great next to Fonte who was fantastic last season and lead the defense line, so we will see how he copes with the shites like Fazio, Kaboul and youngster Dier, the only one working well with him seems to me be Vertonghen next season but we will see
