There seem to be a fair few reports now that this is imminent (or has actually been completed, if not yet officially confirmed).

On the plus side Alderweireld could potentially form a good CB pairing with his Belgian team-mate Vertonghen, as well as providing RB and DM cover versatility.

One more problematic side - and I'm assuming here that both Kaboul and Chiriches will be sold - it would leave us with 5 CBs (including Dier, Fazio and Wimmer), which strikes me as overkill ... unless we're also planning to ship out Fazio, which I'd doubt. It would also limit the further development chances for Dier, although perhaps that's not such a bad thing seeing as he's only 21.

The other possibility, I suppose, is that Poch is planning to use Alderweireld in the DM role, although this seems less likely.

Dutch media has been all over this for a few days now, only seems a matter of time. He was good at Ajax, benched at Atletico but stepped it up at Southampton. He's multifunctional as rightback and DM, I think he will be a good signing for you guys but I'm not overly impressed with him myself. Picks up quite a few niggling injuries too.

He was shit at Atletico but great for Southampton. Would be a very good signing imo.

Be a good singing if you get him. Had a great season at Southampton, and as you said, he can cover in a few positions.

Good signing that'll improve Spurs defence. Weird that they are getting rid of their only decent defensive midfielder though.

Great signing for Spurs.

Will be good for Vertonghen to have this back. Seems a pretty nice partnership on paper.

Good signing based on last season at Southampton. Would need to offload a few defenders though.

lol someone at Atletico fecked up. They were hoping for a nice fat cheque from Spurs. Poor Levy even flew all the way to Madrid.

Does he not have a say in the matter? If he wants to go to Spuds then Southampton can't force him to sign.

Unless im mistaken, the player himself can still reject Southampton and sign for Spurs? S'ton have a deal with Athletico, doesn't mean they have one with the player.

Spurs just have to concentrate on giving him the best offer, No?

Unless he's already agreed the deal, which is exerciseable at the option of Soton, he can go wherever he wants.

A fellow COYSer tells me that Sky Sports are now reporting Southampton that don't actually have a legal team as they sold it to Liverpool.

Levy is probably pissed at all that wasted money flying to Madrid, staying in a hotel etc

It could be possible, we extended Evra's deal without asking him as that was in the contract.

I would say the player would have had to sign some sort of contract before the loan, I wouldn't even call it a loan, it is a version of a transfer.
Like when a player signs a four year deal with an option for the club for a 5th, the player doesn't have to agree for the 5th to kick in, it rolls on automatically.
I'd say the same applies here if Atletico had a deadline to opt out for a nominal fee

Just like with salah, it's not clear if players have a say in these type of deal or not.

It's all a load of nonsense from S'hampton ... probably designed to convince their fans as to the club's fighting credentials. I doubt very much if they'll actually follow-through on their threat of legal action, and if they do it won't succeed.

The horse has bolted. It's too late to be asking why the stable door wasn't properly closed.

Atletico too late to cancel Alderweireld clause, says Koeman

The Southampton manager says the Spanish club failed to cancel a clause in his contract and that he still wants the defender despite an €16m deal between the Liga side and Spurs

By Greg Stobart

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman claims Atletico Madrid were too slow to cancel a clause in Toby Alderweireld’s contract that allows the Saints to sign him on a permanent deal.

The Saints had an option to sign Alderweireld for €9.5 million after his loan spell at St Mary’s last season.

Atletico could have bought out the clause for €2m but Southampton believe the Spanish side did not take up the option within the specified time period.

Southampton are now threatening legal action against Atletico Madrid, who are understood to have agreed a deal worth around €16m for Alderweireld to join Tottenham.

“What came out in the press [was true]. Southampton signed an option to the player and Atletico Madrid are trying to pay back the option,” Koeman told reporters on Monday.

“To our knowledge, it was too late and I don’t know what happened with Tottenham.

“Les Reed [Southampton’s director of football] is working on that situation, I’m waiting on more news on the situation of Toby.”

Alderweireld is believed to favour a transfer to Spurs amid reports that he will undergo a medical on Monday, but Koeman remains keen to sign the Belgian and says the 26-year-old told him earlier in the summer that he wanted to join Southampton permanently.

“Of course [I want him back]," Koeman added. "And the player told us the same. [He said it] before the summer.

“I had a message on my mobile with Toby, but that’s private. I mentioned we had a talk to Toby before the end of last season and he was very happy about Southampton. We mentioned to the player that we’d like to continue and that was the case with Atletico - but what happened after, I don’t know.

“I don’t know [if we’ll match Tottenham’s offer]. I think it’s more up to the club and Les Reed, they are working on that business.”

If Southampton want to engage in a legal battle for compensation with AM, then that's up to them, but none of this impacts on the Spurs deal ... because the fact is that S'hampton's loan-contract with the player had expired, leaving him free to sign for whoever he wants subject to AM's approval. And if he's now signed for Spurs, subject to a medical, then that is now a binding contract which can't be overturned by S'hampton or AM, neither of whom now have any rights over the player.

Haven't Southampton exercised their 'buy' option though?

Haven't Southampton exercised their 'buy' option though?

How can they 'buy' a player whose loan-contract with them has expired, who has signed no further agreement with them and who is now under contract with Spurs?

S'hampton had a 'buy option' contract with AM, not the player. All they can do now is sue AM for alleged breach of contract, but this doesn't involve Spurs and can't change the player's new contract.
