I think he would work fairly well as a the deeper more defensive of the two. He's also acceptable in the air, which gives us more solidity in the middle of the park. He's clearly not a top class target, but a cheap and undervalued option. He is in no way creative enough or a skilled enough passer to be a replacement target for de Jong.

mid we were getting de jong we wouldn’t want him. I think he is one of the plan bs they have talked about.
his major problem alongside rabiot is last seasons poor form. Tielemans was truly awful last year.
I’d prefer SMS but I think kazoo could turn down 45m, and I doubt we want to go big.
Rabiot can command much higher wages next summer when he walks away on a free, so I don't see him lowering his demands now.
Shame, we need midfielder players desperately and I'd happily take anyone who is better than current options, Rabiot fits that bill.

Except de jong is better as the deeper player, rabiot prefers to play as a box to box, but is actually pretty poor as that type of player. His defending and ball recycling is good, but his progressive play, dribbling forward and goal creation as you say is poor.
I think we might leave too big a gap in midfield with rabiot / de jong.
Rabiot has ability and is better than what we have however if he is the alternative to FDJ then we're screwed. We must add another and that other needs to be quality and progressing the ball.
Who would pay them? The wages he's demanding are insane for a player of his quality. He looks like a £100k a week player at best.
Personally I think de Jong is at his best when he has freedom to roam the middle of the park, not necessarily sitting deep.
Rabiot has the skill set to be a good defensive midfielder who can cover for de Jong and should not be played as a box to box for the obvious reasons we both point out. He simply doesn't have the ability for it. If we can see that we should damn well hope a coach like Ten Hag can.

He has 145k gross in Juve, why would he want more than 300k here? I don't buy that, no one could be that stupid...

Wages in Italy are normally stated as net, not gross. He went to Juve as a free agent and I believe they are paying him veeerrry well.

The are both gross and net on Capology, you can choose that, I choose gross and it says 145k. In net they are 112k

Well we can but it should be a short team deal only. We're in a position of relative weakness at the moment so we have to pay more. I don't know why we don't offer a big contract, 3 years with the option of a 4th, if we don't make CL in the next 2 seasons he's allowed to leave for half of what we paid for him.
We should do the same for Frenkie. Puts a bit more tension into the club in terms of ambition and expectation

The issue is that in Italy for a player paid 9m per year gross their tax is around 1.5m.

None of these are good. You can try to find articles from more reputable papers but even then it's largely guess works.
For Serie A, GDS publish wages of all the players which are usually closer to what's reported by Italian journalists.
For other league, especially PL people shouldn't worry about individual wages, it's just PR battle. Just check total wages from official financial report (or usually Swiss ramble puts them in single tweet).
