Don't have a problem with this as long as he works hard and we don't pay him ridiculous wages. At least he's experienced at the top level and won't shit his pants when the ball is passed to him. Alongside a more progressive player, I think he could be decent.

Obviously, it's not good enough in terms of planning and investment. But if that's where we are right now, there's little else to say or do. Trust the manager, don't expect too much of his first season, and hope that we can improve every week.

From what I understand he's never been in charge of transfers at Ajax and our transfer 'activity' this year shows that.

He has a habit of buying some of his old players before like Haller last season but he has never been this involved in picking transfers.

when he can be arsed turning up one in five games, he’s a decent tackler, as a passer long and short is worse than Fred. Is generally a disruptive influence in the dressing room, has a mother who will make raiola look like a day in the park.
I.....had hoped for better :nervous:

Between the 18m transfer fee and the wages we will need to pay him, he is not going to be cheap. His wages will mean that we have less money to sign others. He is also going to be impossible to get rid off

I rather suspect that one of the reasons we are paying a fee is because we are going to be paying him a whole lot less than he was getting at Juve and so they are going to need to pay him the difference to get him to go.

Three years of McFred and the club hierarchy have finally delivered a problematic transfer listed midfielder in the final year of his contract. You have to laugh.
And we are paying almost 20 million to a player that they are willing to get rid of.

I don't think he is wanted in addition to de Jong. We will sing Rabiot and call for the day in midfield. Pathetic.

I'd rather pay 80 million for Declan Rice and solve the CDM area for 7-8 years.

Or get a player like Marcelo Brozovic who'd be slightly cheaper.

Honestly at this stage United should be throwing a lot of money on the table for Rice and FDJ and then if ETH fails it's like "we backed out" this strategy is appalling.

We 100% will.

I am not happy but will wait and see how other transfers pan out. If we get (if) FDJ, I'd be happy with this deal hoping that EtH can get the best out of a player coming into his prime

How embarrassing, a 27 year old professional footballer, and whenever his name is mentioned all that's talked about is how his mom is such a bitch and we better please her to make the deal and keep her happy.

I don't want no fecking mama's boy, sign a proper footballer.

At the start of the window we needed three CMs. I don't have a problem with one of those being someone more cost-effective and slightly less-exciting.

The problem will be if we do this and think it's enough

We've got two in Rabiot and Eriksen, with FDJ almost certainly not coming, what kind of player should we sign?

None of those would join us.

Just read we're willing to pay €18m for him?

@Dante are you sure we're taking a stand and Murtough ain't getting his pants pulled down?

Surely we can can pick him up for free given that Juve seem to want to get rid? Who on earth is doing our negotiating? On one hand we seem to be penny pinching and then we’re paying silly fees for unwanted players…

To be fair to him, he’s played 30+ games a season for Juve including champions league and played relatively regularly for one of the best international teams in the world.
Holding a stat sheet of him vs McTominay does not tell the full picture - he’s levels above him in just general ability.

As a second/third midfield addition? Good business. As first choice panic? Nah

Exactly, they overpaid given his situation but he's better than what we have now, people who rate him lower than Fred or McTominay are lying to themselves. He's not a world class player, nor was I jumping off my seat when this news broke, but I don't hate this move at all.

From my perspective you still pay a pretty small fee for a guy with a lot of experience, who can play next to Eriksen in midfield until we sign De Jong or a better midfielder next year. Blind, Tadic, Schöne were all guys that were labeled as "done" and ETH gave their careers new life and they proved their worth even in the Champions League. I don't care about Juventus fans mocking Utd on twitter and laughing about it, they have never seen the McFred horrors we have to endure every week.

Every time some club makes a relatively cheap pickup people here on the Caf shout how we should do the same, yet when we do the same it's still conceived as poor business. Juve squeeze us because they know we can be squeezed, but we don't have the luxury of walking away and being stiff negotiators at this point, or the years before, we are in crisis and we NEED an upgrade over what we have to try and salvage something from this season, because we looked absolutely horrendous that first half and there's plenty more of that yet to come if we don't act. He's still 27 too. I'd rather see low risk, high reward moves like this for proven players than throwing another 40-50 million or even more for a Tielemans or Neves.

I guess as a back up to FDJ, he is a decent name. Haven't seen him play so no idea if he can be a good signing for us - but this reeks of the same old issues at the club.

Poor scouting and lack of choices!

@JPRouve is the only poster worth reading here. Redcafe is all about get a midfielder for a good price, now we're getting a solid player for a decent fee (although it could be less given he's put of contract in a year) it's again doom and gloom cause someone on twitter put his statistics as opposed to Mctominay's from August 2021.

He's better than Mctominay for sure, but meh...

We genuinely do not seem to have a plan at the moment. Bissouma was available a few months ago for a decent price and is probably 3-4 times the player Rabiot is. What are we at?

As freaked out as I am about the links to this guy and Arnautovic, it is worth remembering that one of the reasons many fans wanted Ten Hag was his ability to turn average players into gems - Tadic, Haller, even Blind to a degree. Maybe clutching at straws but Ten Hag probably thinks he could do a similar job with these guys.

Its the Dutch league. Its not that difficult to do well there

Not sure about the meltdown on this thread. I could understand if he was an alternative to De Jong but it is clear that he is not. We need bodies in midfield and competition for places so that Fred and McT don’t get complacent. Since the fee is low, the risk is also low on this one.

My sense is that this is a temporary move till we find someone better on our terms. Right now clubs can see our desperation and will take us to the cleaners. I would rather have him than nobody else.

Other clubs - show ambition - plan ahead - manage deals under the radar - make shrewd buys

We - live in cuckoo dreamland - can’t close a deal in public - make panic buys - are desperate and get shafted

The day we atart winning games regularily, these headlines are interchangeable.

What I’m curious about regarding Rabiot is this: My one take-home point for Ten Hag on sunday was that if we’re going to play Out from the back with hig full backs, we need to play Eriksen, and we have to have a steady no 6 player. McTom and Fred have their uses, but that is not one of them, we need someone decent at that to be able to play Eriksen at all - so is Rabiot willing and able to play that role now? He was seen as maybe a bigger talent for the CDM role at PSG, but purportedly wanted to play further up the pitch. If he has ‘matures’ by now, maybe it’s the ‘panic buy’ we need? A short term solution to mke the other players play their ideal roles?

Can we not just drop some dosh on Brighton's table and see if they would sell Caicedo? Or Lyon for Caqueret?

Hell Neves is looking more desirable right now - at least he'll genuinely help with ball retention and transition. Unless we will sign this type in addition.

Even Brozovic, as @TheNewEra mentioned.

If it means I don't have to see McFred in the line up every week then this signing is fine with me. This upgrades our midfield. He is miles better than McTominay even on a bad day.

Will he have to satisfy her in both? That could be a risky one.

Back himself in the sack first and risk dissapointment forcing him to pay more money to make her happy.

Or give her all the money she wants and then just do as he pleases in the sack. Rub himself close and then just get it done in 30 seconds.

Business before pleasure. Veronique will propose a range of weekly wages depending on how long Murtough lasts. Arnold will be there to witness and provide encouragement to Murtough to ensure we save every penny on this deal.

He has a habit of buying some of his old players before like Haller last season but he has never been this involved in picking transfers.

Which is exactly what he's doing here, buying some players that he's worked here before + accepting some random players that board presents in front of him. I was wondering how he knew Rabiot as he never played against Ajax though.

It's getting to the point where I wouldn't be mad at us paying 120m for Declan fecking Rice

Just doubting that he'd want to sign currently though

Why would Rice want a lateral move?

Honestly? United are bigger than West Ham and he'd get paid more. The only other move would be Chelsea which is not that far away as a squad.

I don't see him going abroad, Liverpool, City are stacked in that position. Spurs wouldn't pay that kind of money.

Why does anyone care about a couple of million(in terms of paying 18 vs a slightly lower amount), literally the whole forum was screaming for any midfielder better than McTominay after the game, and now we're getting one, for a fee that won't rule out signing another one at any point in the future. Stop worrying about money that isn't yours, and just be happy that we may not ever see McTominay start a game again.
