I do like Rabiot, he is a good player. The problem is he's a similar player to Fred, playing him and Fred is an improvement on Mctominay but neither are defensive players.

I really wish we went in for Bissouma, then a combination of Bissouma, Fred/Rabiot, Eriksen/Bruno is very good midfield depth.

You are talking about folks 24hrs ago saying that -- its embarrassing that United has no Plan B. Then a few hours later, we need to pay whatever it takes to get FdJ.

Then another few hours later: we need to sign 3-4 players ASAP. Clown show!

Then a few more hours later: Him? WTF!!! We are a joke of a club for wanting him! Embarrassing.

I could accept all of that, if they talked about players with any sort of accuracy but here we have the majority of people describing the opposite of what the player is.

Rabiot is not very poor on the ball. It's so obvious that many of you have no clue about the player.

He's never impressed me when I've watched him. Maybe you've seen games where he was particularly good but I certainly don't think he'd make a big improvement to our midfield

With proper planning we could have gotten him earlier in the window though. Him and Laimer or Kamara were cheap enough that we could have signed them and still chased de Jong all summer. But we just had to get another CB I guess.

Yes I agree with all that

How many games have you seen of him?

A player who actually presses and can defend, won't improve the midfield?

Watch him come in and instantly be our best midfielder. Does he shit himself on the ball? If not great, he’s instantly a fan favourite.

Based on literally everything I'm looking at, he would absolutely not be an upgrade. He has worse stats in a worse league adapted to slower play.
Having watched all three multiple times I think he is an upgrade. Not a huge one, but an upgrade. Just an opinion though, and I would have question marks on his personality.
But this is where the club has left us at this stage of the market

Went over to Juventuz forum and Rabiot doesn't seem very popular among that fan base. They have been wishing for someone to take him off their squad and have mostly questioned his professionalism and inability to show up for 80% of the season. This was all before he was linked to a move to United. Doesn't bode well.

I've watched a lot of Juventus games over the last few years and I also saw him play for PSG so I don't know the exact number but it's been a lot. He impressed me more when he was at PSG. I wasn't specifically focusing on Rabiot in these games like I do when I want to scout certain players but from just generally watching matches as a neutral I've seen him lose the ball alot and he's always looked like a weakness for Juventus imo. If they disagreed with that I doubt he would currently be in the last year of his contract despite entering what should be his prime.

Bruno
Eriksen - Fred

first midfield sub : Donny Van de Beek.
I don't know why people think he is needed to not have McTominay as a starter. He is not.
ETH picked McT as a starter because he chose to, not because he had to.

Sounds like he'll fit right in at United.

He'd be an improvement, but not a significant one. I'd still probably take him over nothing but there are many players I would prefer us to go for first.

At this point, this ain't a football forum. It's a mental health pinata.

What's his record like for France in tournaments? Isn't he a regular?

Fixed. Didn’t stop them.

Tbf his previous season's stats look better.
What about the season before that? Has this been a constant degradation with no signs of improvement? Why put him into a tougher league when last season he was worse than Scott was last season in said tougher league? Makes no sense for me. Scott should be a squad player for us, not a starter, I'll give anyone and everyone that. But to replace his starting position with someone who performs on average worse than Scott has in a worse league despite being in a team of Juventus' stature, is absurd.

He is more of a ball carrier unlike Fred and also physically bigger and a lot better

The midfield is really poor but I don't rate Rabiot at all. Would rather avoid, but desperate times can call for desperate measures.

We would be signing him purely on the basis of "prestige"/pedigree of previous clubs.

Our scouting operation just makes me utterly despair about the way the club is run.

Wrong again, we have no midfielders that both apply presser and defend well, Rabiot is also decent on the ball if not very good to excellent, but we have Eriksen and hopefully FDJ for that.
Having Rabiot protecting the defence and recycling possession would be a good improvement, he can also carry the ball well too.

I would also note, more than likely tomorrow we'll find out Rabiot has signed for some other club anyway

Fair amount of Juve fans worried about his injuries and low and be hold. I swear sometimes the people working in football can be very clueless. Redcafe worried about wan bissaka's ball abilities and look at us now.

could see this being a disaster if ETH does not rate the player. he comes in and doesn't get picked we will instantly hear his mom start to go off on the club. Yes, his mommy.

Here's his stats for the Nations League this year:

He didn't play in the 1-1 draw with Austria. Needless to say, France are not having a great year.

I'm genuinely curious: Do you have any stats that back up Rabiot being better than McTominay in McT's position? Because when I compare them, Rabiot generally looks absolutely worse last season and kind of 50/50 vs Scott the season before that. This while playing in a slower, lower quality league. If he plays for us I'd like to be proven wrong but I am looking at the devils in the details and he's not really shining, while playing for a team that is at the moment going through a similar struggle domestically to ourselves.

THE UGLY
- Made fewer touches
- Scored fewer goals
- Attempted fewer passes
- Had worse pass accuracy
- Had worse long pass accuracy
- Had worse cross accuracy
- Attempted fewer (0) through balls
- Contested fewer aerial duels
- Had worse aerial duel success rate
- Contested fewer ground duels
- Made fewer clearances
- Made fewer interceptions

Based on these stats which cover the entirity of last season, Rabiot is a worse player than McTominay.

Well, those highlighted are not "bad" in my eyes. McTominay likes to have the ball because he thinks he's gods gifts to human, hence the more touches. He thinks he is a good passer, which he's not, hence the more "worse pass accuracy". Crossing is our winger and wing backs job, not a central midfielder. And "attempted "fewer through balls"... again, McTominay thinks he's a good passer so he tries them more, but he's useless

Set mode to PANIC.

Club is an absolute shambles, I suspect EtH, the board and the Glazers thought we'd sweep away Brighton yesterday.

Decent and hopefully cheap. The kind of low fee players we should be looking to sign. So many low fee upgrades we could have bought to replace the players who’ve left but this shot show of a club decides as usual to wait and let other teams strengthen and then work after the disaster of an opening weekend in the league. Bravo Glazers never change!

Fred is one of the best pressers in the entire league. His problem is his defensive positioning is inconsistent because he's not a natural dm and played most of his games at Shakhtar as an attacking midfielder. For us all of his best games have come when he's positioned slightly higher up the pitch. In terms of Rabiot improving us due to his pressing, sure, he'd improve our ability to win the ball back but there are plenty of midfielders that can do that. Sangare who plenty have mentioned can do that but Sangare's passing is very inconsistent and because of this I don't think he suits a possession based team like ETH almost certainly wants Utd to be. I feel the same about Rabiot. Despite what some others seem to believe I don't think Rabiot is a particularly good passer and as I mentioned to another poster I've seen him lose the ball frequently. If you disagree with that fine, but my opinion is he wouldn't be a very good buy, and that's without even going into what seem to be consistent reports about his lack of professionalism, which by all accounts seems to already be an issue within our dressing room.

Pretty much nailed it

The outpouring from yesterday has been immense.

Seems we trying to fill holes as the targets we want don't seem to be wanting to come or for other reasons example being DeJong with Barca.

What's the options here, mcfred can't carry on rest of season so signing like this might be needed to get us thru the season.

At same time hard to know what is going on, we've been linked with about 50 players, which is nonsense mostly made up.

Ok, applying pressure and knowing how to effectively press tactically are different things.
But your second sentence hits the nail on the head...
