Accents in film and television

I find I can't actually bring myself to watch the Mclaren interview again, I literally can't click on it. I try to avoid it with the cursor even. Could it be the most embarrassing thing ever?

I remember the debate surrounding Leo's accent in Blood Diamond. Some people hated it, others loved it ! Even the natives couldn't figure out if it was good or bad. Bloody annoying the level of debate around that.

Its pretty annoying when the actors just go with the stereotypical almost-spoofed accents and don't put any effort into it at all. Kevin Costner in RH has to be the tops. DDL is always pretty much spot on in my opinion.

In the first 3 episodes of The Sopranos, James Gandolfini's accent was fecking awful, thank feck he was a quick learner

Is that right? I know he's from New York which would be different but only slightly from New Joyzee, didn't think his wasn't natural, very surprised there....

He was born and raised in New Jersey, and trust me his accent was perfectly natural.

I'm not a big connoisseur of films or television so I'm not real familiar with a lot of actors or actresses. I had never heard of Hugh Laurie before I saw House the first time and when my wife told me he was English, I told her she was full of shit. Looked up his bio and sure enough, she was right.
That's one that gets the accent right. So much so, that an American couldn't tell that it was a fake American accent.

English people are much better at doing American accents than Americans are at doing English accents.

Natalie Portmans brittish accent in Vendetta was painful.

Hugh Laurie's american accent in House is flawless.

Cate Blanchet's russian accent in Indiana Jones was......horrible.

I read an interview with Stephen Fry not long ago.

Apparently, many people on the set of House didn't know that Laurie was an Englishman. Perhaps due to ignorance but also because to keep in character, he usually kept the American accent while on set.

But one time, when Fry visit him on the set, he didn't feel comfortable conversing with another Englishman with his fake accent, and start talking with his normal accent. The people on the set who heard him talking with the English accent was shouting "why the feck you talk like that"

On another note, Christian Bale American accent was perfect in the Batman movies.

People's views on Wentworth Miller's accent in Prison Break?

bloody hell, didn't even know he was British, and I've seen every episode so far :)

DiCaprio always puts a lot of effort into his characters, and pulls it off for the most part. I do think that he would be rated higher as a serious actor if his posters weren't on every girls bedroom wall in the late 90's. I blame his agent... that would never have happened with Ari Gold ;) As for his Blood Diamond accent, I loved it. My father is married to a South African woman, and she speaks a weird accent that kind of resembles DiCaprios in that film, so I can imagine that is being spoken in Zimbabwe, or where ever it was he was supposed to be from.

Didn't know there were so many film critics on the caf, do you people get the chance to enjoy any of the films you watch?

Go to Belleville,Newark and all the rest of the small cities in Jersey, and it's the same accent.

It is different from the accent he has in the rest of the series, I'll give it to you that he still has the accent in the first few but he delivers it differently after the first few episodes

According to wikipedia he moved the America when he was 1.

Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins is pretty good.

I didn't think that at all! I found it hard to take his character seriously because of his dodgy accent.

It's terrible having to listen to Americans do Irish accents, but I'm glad I'm not English because you they have to put up with fake english accents much more often.

the worst accent i've ever heard in a film was that bloke out of green street, he actually did a worse cockney accent than dick van dyke.

Was just on ITV4, forgot how bad the accent was. One of the worst i've heard

I think I read that the actual director didn't know Hugh Laurie wasn't an American when he chose him for the part. Think it was the director, but either way it was someone 'important'.

Then I recommend you not to watch Ordinary Decent Criminal with Kevin Spacey!

I've seen the trailer for Valkyrie and it really annoys me that Tom Cruise didn't even make an attempt at a German accent.

I've brought this up at the work the other day to emphasize my belief that Cruise is one of the most overrated actors in history. Compare him to Brad Pitt, who accented a pikey in Snatch.

Both Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt are good actors despite the early pretty-boy tags, although Depp is superior to Pitt as he doesn't do cheesy movies anymore whereas Brad Pitt still does romantic comedies and other gay shit.
Brad Pitt in True Romance was brilliant.

If that was your argument for why Cruise is one of the most overrated actors in history, then you're a bit of a tit. If you had bothered checking it out, you would have realized that it was the directors decision that the actors in Valkyrie were to adopt a neutral accent so as to not distract from the actual movie.

And if you think some other people seem to be faking German accents in it, it might be because they're Germans.

Cruise is overrated and that was just one point. I didn't mention other actors in this movie just Cruise. But carry on anyhow with your love fest, dick.

Pitt is a much better actor than he gets credit for. He was great in Kalifornia.

Pirates of the Carribean 1-3 were cheesy, that said I bet he took home a handsome paycheque

The first one was great, the other two so-so but his character in the first was very refreshing and well done. I remember thinking he should have got an Oscar for it but would never be nominated for one as it's not thyat type of movie, but fair enough, he did get nominated.

The first one was decent after that they went off the deep end

I thought the first one was absolutely brilliant. It had everything. The other two were decent entertainment, if far from good movies. Incidentally I feel much the same about the Matrix trilogy. The first one is one of my all time favorites, but I try to avoid thinking about "those other two".
