Academy @ Liverpool

Tom Thorpe looks like an exceptional talent - how often do you see a 15-year old defender play with such composure and maturity ? I have to be careful judging a defender after watching him for 90 mins - but I haven't been so impressed with a young, homegrown defender since Craig Cathcart made his debut for the reserves as a 16-year old against Liverpool

Tom Thorpe and Scott Wootton could be a good partnership in next years academy-league.

Wootton may be too old next year!

Thorpe and Brown will probably be the central pairing.

He is playing for the reserves at Accrington on Monday night so is being rested for that.

Ah right thanks, 2 Reserve games this week then? From what I remember, I think there is one on Thursday away to Everton I think. Surprising how they haven't played for weeks then two in 3-4 days.

Two games, yeah. The Accrington game is in the Lancashire Senior Cup, the Everton game in the league.

Cheers prateik (and zuco, who/whereever he is...), great quality those.

Glad to be of help

Just ignore it, Charley - a lot of us really appreciate your videos from the reserves and academy matches.

You're about the only one who provides highlights from those matches.
Keep up the good work.

Reminds me when my dad would take me down to watch the kids play when I was thirteen or so; Neville, Butt, Beckham, Scholes etc but two of the biggest drawcards were Chris Casper and Ben Thornley who were billed as the best two prospects. I remember Thornley running into the crowd ( and I mean crowd, loads used to go down to The Cliff to watch these lads play they were that good) and he knocked a few old fellas over and he was like that with his Salford accent "sorreh, sorreh" and the old blokes were almost bumming him, "No worries Ben lad, get back in, never mind us" and that sort of thing. Great lad Ben Thornley was, shame neither he nor Casper made it, Thornley in particular suffered a terrible challenge from Nicky Marker, a right Blackburn cnut

I am sure Thornley would have made it without the injuries, top class youngster.

He was better than Gillespie was and he forged a semi-decent career for Newcastle in the mid to late nineties.
Last I saw he was at Bradford I think, very sad as he was average for them. Those injuries really blighted his path.

Is Petrucci the talent we're all hoping he is? That's a question to all those who regularly watch academy games and such (training, even? who knows).

Personally Im seeing him develop every time I watch him. Hard to say where his best postion will be. I dont think he'll end up playing up top, he's far to gifted creatively from what I''ve seen. He clipped a pass to Macheda in the first 20mins against Liverpool that only Scholes in the first team would have had the vision to pick out.

Petrucci is very good.

Macheda is the real gem. Great awareness, and passing range range for someone so young.

Have you got them the wrong way round?

Macheda has many talents but I wouldn't single out his passing range, whereas that's probably a fair comment on Petrucci.

Macheda reminds me of Berbatov with his deft touches.

Davide Petrucci looks a class above, and I know that phrase is thrown about a lot nowadays but it is completely the case. His passing, awareness, control, skill, shooting etc is all on a different level from most of those he's playing with and against. Completely agree with Decotron, some of his play is very reminiscent to Scholes though I think that he's not quite the same type of player as he's more of a runner with the ball and doesn't sit quite as much - that pass by the way was one of the best I have seen anywhere this season, unbelievable technique.

It says a lot about the quality of a player when at 16 they're being lined up for a chance in the Roma first team and are playing for Italy U19s too! I just hope that we keep him progressing rather than hold him back for too long and give him the chances when he's deemed ready - which seems as though it could be sooner than first thought. Would be nice to see him in some cup games and maybe make a few cameo appearances next season for the first team. Great prospect and it's key that he can play a variety of attacking positions, should help him get a real chance hopefully.

I know it's been said that he's played on the wing for Roma quite a bit cutting in and shooting but have we actually seen him do that at United yet? And if so, did he look comfortable there?

I don't recall him playing on the wing to be honest, he's played in the centre of midfield and behind the main striker in a free role - looked very comfortable and accomplished in both. Same as you, I've read that he used to play on the left wing for Roma and cut in on to his right foot.

Come to think of it - our academy team for next season is starting to look fairly yummy!

Conor Devlin - who looks much more solid than Gary Woods

Tom Thorpe - he is a 93-lad methinks
Scott Wootton - he is born in september 91 so he can play next year
Reece Brown - born september 91 so he can play

Rob Brady - born 92 and he looks class
Ryan Tunnicliffe - born 31.12.1992 - and this guy will be interesting
Davide Petrucci - born october 91 - will probably be in the reserves though
Ra'vel Morrison - born 93 and is the most exciting prospect in a LONG time

Joshua King - born january 92 - and looks promising
John Cofie - if he is half the talent they claim he is .. well

In addition we also have Nicky Ajose who is playing for the academy.

We need a new leftback though - otherwise it looks strong

Zeki Fryers is an option at left-back, played there for us in the Milk Cup and has done for England U17.
