Abysmal penalty shootout record

It’s frustrating because we score away in them so bottle isn’t an issue

The majority of the players have a weak mentality and that trait comes to the forefront time and time again when the pressure gets cranked up.
We've scored 17 penalties in the last 2 shootouts. Do you expect nobody to miss ever?

I knew when it was locked at 1-1 we would take it to pens and then lose. Our record is a joke and we really do have a mentality problem.

To be fair on the last two shoot outs we didn't miss in our first 5 takers and the oppo team had some exceptional shots.

Dean should have saved that one that went under him though, also by that token, McTominay probably should have missed too.

Put it this way, would you want De Gea to spend more time focussing on and practising his one missed penalty against Villarreal, or those eleven opportunities to save a penalty?

Our penalty goal conversion is pretty good. Our save percentage feels very poor.

Would have won if we had Romero still

Yet another piece of damage caused by the previous regime. Selling away a very good and contented backup keeper for some typical hyped up average English keeper.

Focusing on finding ways to read and anticipate shooters better would be a far safer bet for a goalkeeper. I wish this was something our goalkeepers could work about. After all, why do some goalkeepers have better save percentages on penalties? There are little tricks that can be learned so it is not a coincidence.

Since we beat Spurs on penalties in 2009 League cup final, we've played penalty shootouts 8 times - winning once against Rochdale (League One team) at Old Trafford, losing 7 times, 4 of those losses were at Old Trafford, against Sunderland, Derby County (Championship team) and Middlesbrough twice (Championship team both times).

1 win out of 8 in penalty shooutouts, that one being against a League One side in 3rd round of League cup. Damning stats. You'd expect to win at least 3 out of 8, we lost 7.

I loved Romero, but that’s a bizarre shout given Henderson’s penalty record prior to tonight.

Doesn’t feel good, but still fine margins in a small sample. More disappointing is failing to beat those teams over 90 minutes and extra time, and having the opportunity to lose on pens.

21 consecutive penalties scored past us in shootouts

Since Romero saved Jimmy Keohane’s spot kick back in 2019, the next 21 penalties we have faced in shootouts have all been scored:

Rochdale (25th September 2019)
Their 2nd penalty saved (Jimmy Keohane)
Their 3rd penalty scored
Their 4th penalty scored
Running total = 2

Villarreal (26th May 2021)
All 11 spot kicks successfully converted by them
Running total = 13

Middlesbrough (4th February 2022)
All 8 spot kicks successfully converted by them
Running total = 21

Shocking!

What is worse is that our goalkeepers don't appear to train for penalty shootouts because they would have their share of tricks to either anticipate shots or get into shooters' heads otherwise. This is the kind of thing that also comes with a good chunk of practice.

Being an England and United fan is rough

Not only are we terrible at shootouts but it also feels like everyone we play against turns into prime Ballotelli/Lampard/Ronaldo/Jorginho from the spot

If your keeper is making himself tiny /generally not doing much between the sticks to put doubt in your mind, chances are you'll be pretty relaxed.

We've taken some decent pens ourselves. I'd say a big problem (that can't be fixed) is the opposition taking top class penalties and not missing the target. We've lost because the opposition has been really good. One of the main issues is not getting to go 1st. You're at a disadvantage going 2nd. There is so much more pressure going 2nd.

Not true.I remember De Gea had instructions about the Villarreal takers written on his gloves.
If a pen is properly taken no keeper will save it.
End of.

I don't blame Elanga at all the kid was distraught after his miss, it happens in a shoot out. The keeper I though should have tried a bit more he was moving to early giving them an easy shot. Just sitting down on the floor ffs. He got to 1 to early and it went under him. But it is always a lottery to win a shoot out . Ask the Bindippers they won Europen cups in a few.

In fairness normally if you score your first 5 penalties you win the shootout. Last two shootouts have gone well beyond that and its been the first miss of the shootout by us that been the issue. For some reason the opposition In the shootouts have absolutely buried there penalties maybe because they are quite often underdogs they feel less pressure? There was only one that should of been saved, every other penalty was very much in the corner.

Sancho?
Malacia?
Weghorst?

One of them will be the one who let us down

De Gea has no presence for pens, legitimately terrible at saving them.

What's the point City are winning the final anyway

May as well lose now
