Aaron Lennon Retires

Another one of the many fast wingers who fail to develop their end product to hurt teams regularly enough.

One of those many wingers - or strikers - whose pace absolutely frightens defenders but whose lack of regular end product means, overall, they're more frustrating rather than frightening. And so don't achieve all that they probably should in the game.

It's impossible to 'coach' a slow player to get to Lennon's level of pace. But you'd think you could coach them to improve their crossing and finishing over their career. But then, with some, I guess it's not just technical, it's also about consistent levels of composure and decision making - which is maybe more of an innate quality and something that is difficult to coach to a consistent level if they lack it naturally.

I never saw Kanchelskis. You're right about peak Bale. Was Walcott really faster? I know he was up there so maybe I'm just forgetting it but I always though Walcott was around Rashford's pace

Walcott in his earlier years was obscenely quick, I don't think you are wrong about Rashford mind. I reckon Marcus when he is totally fit is in the top level of fastest players we have ever seen. In a straight foot race I think he just edges Bale from his Spurs days personally.

Another overrated player simply because he's fast. Must be the most overrated attribute.

Put things into context a little. He spent more than a decade in premier league football and making appearances for England.

His pace was not overrated particularly if it helped his career so much. As for coaching, the decision making aspect is true. It's very difficult at that level.

I was not meaning his pace is overrated, I mean pace in general is.
