A word about forum etiquette

Soon I will have the forum I want, where only jam making and fishing are allowed be discussed. And by discussed I mean you all listen to my aged wisdom on trout and damsons.

I once got bitten by a trout, it's a mercilessly tedious story which I will keep up my sleeve for when this time arrives.

Ooooh. We'll save it for the fallow period between the World Cup final and the Charity Shield.

In a thread about cessation of personal abuse you 'accuse' a mod of using the phrase 'Moyes apologist'. I have news for you, that doesn't undermine the mod in question from asking poster not to use the offensive words given as an example in the OP. So your 'end of' was even more obnoxious than it would have been were you right. Speaking of which, that sort of arrogant dismissive language is much worse and more offensive than 'Moyes apologist' and is just as damaging to discussion as personal insults, which is the minefield we have to wade through.

Far from an accusation considering it's in the Moyes thread. It's actually posted.

I'm all for what you're trying to do here. But, as I stated, when Mods are engaging in said activity, the cause is not helped, is it?

The mods don't tend to engage in this kind of activity, to be fair, except one notable exception who does exactly what is mentioned in the OP.

There are some. But the others are very good, particularly the older ones like bunder etc

I read that as damsels at first

I'll pass, am more of a halibut man

Or mackerel, mmm mackerel

Long gone seem the dass that I and Pogue disagreed on pretty much everything and threw insults at each other back in 08. But yeah probably for the better.

I try to keep to a "if you havent got anything nice to say, shut the f*** up" philosophy
But I accept that this forum is a great place to "VENT", and boy have we all had reason to vent this season. But venting shouldnt be confused with abuse and it absolutely doesnt give anyone the right to attack individuals. We all get wound up, we're all passionate out football and our clubs in particular. But remember this, you have to press POST to send your thoughts. That means you have time and opportunity to pause before sending stuff out. Use that time. There will always be idiots, WUM's and opinions that get our backs up. Sinking to their level shows a lack of class, rise above it. Tease, take the mick, try and point out where people went wrong, but draw a line before it gets nasty. Bottom line, we're all in this together. It's a place to share, and enjoy. Lets not f*** it up eh peeps - here endeth an old mans rant

I'm sorry, I use the word 'spastic' quite a bit, I thought it was just a funny word and wasn't aware of a negative connotation. Apologies for the many uses of it, I honestly had no idea it was bad.

What did you think it meant? Good at maths?

:) well..it wasn't orginally a bad word...being an accepted word to describe cerebral palsy...but over the decades..yeah...as human nature is, it turned into a bad word through misuse in abuse!!

Honestly, I never knew which is stupid for me, ignorance not being a good line of defence. Note I didn't grow up in England so some common insults like that, my mum wouldn't use them around the house. Basically I saw it on the Caf and thought it sounded funny, I just didn't know the extent of the abuse.

To be honest I've only heard one person call someone a spastic in public here RiP. And he was unconscious minutes after.

It's not a common word anymore thankfully. I remember being a bit surprised on the level of some of the insults here, but it seems the bigger the insult on here, the more the person is respected. It reminds me of my job in a factory.

I never used words like that before the caf, now they are creeping into my vocabulary which I'd worrying because they are shitty words to use.

Have people really been complaining to the mods about the level of "discord"?

I'll admit a fortnight or so ago I posted a letter up to Niall about words or names like bogger, thick muck savage and stuff like that being used a bit too much on here lately alright. He mustn't have got it though as he didn't mention them words in his OP. He'll probably edit it though when he gets my letter.

The cause? Said activity? In a thread about personal abuse, you accused the mods of double standards because one used the innocuous phrase 'Moyes apologist'. I have no idea where you are coming from or going with this, maybe somebody could explain it to me?

There are a couple of Mods that do that, though. Just like other posters, although the Mods are on the whole very good on this forum.

Do what? Insult people? Well mods are posters, and are as entitled to lose the head as anyone. If a mod is insulting you or others in a disruptive way, just report them. A discussion will be had and have been had, and the other mods will have a word. Usually ending up with the advice that if a poster winds a mod up then the mod should just ignore the poster and leave them to other mods. My point with Always Redwood is that his example is not really abuse.

The point of the OP is not to lose your head on these tiny unimportant matters. Actually a lot of losing of heads here happens at the slightest of disagreement.

I'm not criticizing Mods particularly. I think the modding here is excellent. It's the other posters that are generally spreading this trend. But there's a mod here and there that dont set the best examples either. Some of the newer mods in particular Your may well be right about AR's example, wouldnt know about that tbh.]

Anyway, Niall's message is a good one, that every one should heed, regular poster, mod, whatever.

Agreed. But the truth is that most of the debate on here is frequently over small margins and tiny matters, so I think the point is debate what you like, but don't get personal when you don't agree. As for mods not quite getting the balance right, feel free to report them and we'll sort it out, and it won't be taken personally if it's not personal. The mod room versions of these threads are much less us/them than the ones on the boards and the aim is to make the forums better, genuinely.

I'm sure they are. This place is generally superbly run and the initial set of mod set that tone. And back then there was a lot more crazy shit going on and hence more to handle.

I just came across as such a post by a mod yesterday but it makes no sense for me to report it given it wasn't aimed at me. That would be a bit lame.
