A Manchester United Womens Team??

While I agree with the OP, I would never go to a womans game live. Not because of the football which is actually quite good, but because of the sound of the crowd which is like an ice-pick through my eyeball.

Just like i think Man. Utd. should not just consist of world class Brazilians with Japanese fans (though I like players and fans from Brazil and Japan), but must build on the local roots and people, just like I think Man Utd should have teams for local kids, not just national and international talent bought in when they,re 16+, just like I admire Ferguson for including even the Old Trafford janitor as an equal in the Man Utd Family instead of saying Wazza makes us the money, so he should have his own suite at the stadium - I think Man United should as a matter of course include all people of Manchester in their football factory, men or women, boys or girls. If I was a Manc girl seeing that City included girls and United excluded them, I would know where I was welcome also as support.

well said

The Canada-USA game last night was cracking entertainment. Plus, it benefited from not having any of the histrionics that seems to always accompany the mens game these days.

Not sure that would convince me to watch it on a regular basis, mind you. Still, though, I'm probably not the main demographic who'd be interested.

It always struck me as wrong that Manchester United, a team I have supported for 54 years is the only major Premiership club without a womens team.
For a club which prides itsel on leading innovation (such as the decision to enter European competition) it strikes me as backward that United dont have a womens team.
Simply put any boy sitting at Old Trafford wearing an over-priced replica shirt can at least aspire to playing for the worlds greatest football club. A young girl cannot aspire..........a young girl United fan cant dream.......in the Theatre of Dreams!!!.
It is wrong.
So it is ironic that Manchester United publish a photograph of a woman fan wearing a United replica shirt........but the young woman in question actually scored a goal for USA tonight.
Its just wrong.....to take money for replica shirts from fans who can never play in a "real" shirt.

When the Olympics ends and the GB Womens team having proven itself in a great football festival there will surely be a campaign to increase investment in Womens Football and its about time that Manchester United stepped up to that challenge.

In an awful post, that bit struck me as being particularly bad.

So can I summarise the position as follows.
1. No to a Womens Team on the basis that it is against nature.......backed by some sub Chubby Brown styled sexism .....and it would lose money. And anyway Greed is Good. (not exactly high minded Green/Gold position)

2. Yes....because it is reasonable enough premise. We live in 2012.

3. Hmmm there is actually a reasonable business case (personally Im surprised nobody mentioned the disasterous Basketball team).....women are consumers ....and it kinda makes sense on the grounds that Womens Football is actually getting better is popular in North America and Asia...and it seems fair-minded to have one.

Meanwhile the Official Website notes that Fran Halsall and Holly Bleasdale from the Olympics are United fans. I have of course no idea how they feel on the subject...or indeed the opinions of any women (have any actually spoken on the thread?) but with Premiership Football in the gutter and sewer it seems reasonable to attach itself to the feel-good factor the Olympics has brought.
Of course on the first day of the Premiership season look out for Football Clubs getting in the act......Bradley Wiggins at Anfield is a certainty, Jessica Ennis at a Sheffield club

Who'd go watching a load of split arses running around like headless chicken?

No thanks.

But you don't have to watch the women's team if you don't want to. You don't have to subscribe to MUTV or buy the shirt each year.

I know people will get bored of the Barca comparison, but I'd rather United be slightly more than 18 multinational millionaire mercenaries employed by a foreign owner who treats United either purely as a business product or a play thing.

Women's football will never be big in this country. It's a fact, simply because the quality isnt up there with the men's game. But if you want to watch it, fair play to you. Enjoy

Thought you United had one, my old manager in worked claimed used to play for them and trained at the cliff, suppose she may have just been full of shit though

I might go. My niece is really into football and it would be fun to take her along to matches when I'm in M/cr. Gives me the perfect excuse to ogle the players without being labelled a perv.

They did have a team, but packed it in. She might be telling the truth.

As soon as the Olympics are over I doubt many people will give a shit about womens football. The quality isn't high enough, and a lot of people just wouldn't want to watch a womans game, just because they're women

It's more to do with the quality not being there, compared to men's football. It just won't ever go global on a massive scale, but like I said, if folk want to watch it, it's up to them.

Women's football was growing strongly before it was banned by the FA in the twenties, with crowds in the tens of thousands. Which is why the FA banned it, because they feared it would threaten the men's game. Yet one more reason to call the FA cnuts, if any more are needed.

The US is a good location for a league because spectator support is pretty consistent even if anemic by men's standards...Truth is, less women probably go to attend sporting events than men...Take a gander at most of the crowds at men's events, it's predominantly male supported

I couldn't weigh in on a lot of countries and how well they'd support a women's team but my guess is that most countries in Europe would struggle to maintain a sufficient level of attendance to profit from gate receipts etc....Although, I imagine that doesn't hold for the Scandinavian countries...I know France & Spain seem to have good support for their respective women's leagues...Barça also has a squad and qualified for the CL this season, they play in a small venue that seats 1,000

My old pickup game, we always had a few women that played with us - some really terrific players with great technique, quickness and understanding of the game...They seemed to like the higher pace of playing with men, seemed to help in their respective women's leagues they also played in

I enjoy the International competitions with the women's teams, they are quite competitive and the quality seems to always be improving...Not sure I would spend much time watching a woman's professional match outside of that...In more than 12 years as a fan of Barcelona, I've seen a number of matches on many levels for the club but I've only seen highlights of the women's team in all that time...So I doubt it would see too much crossover support, not consistently anyway...Still, if the support and interest is there, why not?
