It always struck me as wrong that Manchester United, a team I have supported for 54 years is the only major Premiership club without a womens team.
For a club which prides itsel on leading innovation (such as the decision to enter European competition) it strikes me as backward that United dont have a womens team.
Simply put any boy sitting at Old Trafford wearing an over-priced replica shirt can at least aspire to playing for the worlds greatest football club. A young girl cannot aspire..........a young girl United fan cant dream.......in the Theatre of Dreams!!!.
It is wrong.
So it is ironic that Manchester United publish a photograph of a woman fan wearing a United replica shirt........but the young woman in question actually scored a goal for USA tonight.
Its just wrong.....to take money for replica shirts from fans who can never play in a "real" shirt.

When the Olympics ends and the GB Womens team having proven itself in a great football festival there will surely be a campaign to increase investment in Womens Football and its about time that Manchester United stepped up to that challenge.

why would you laugh?

Hate people like that.

Don't hate me it was the wrong topic. It was supposed to go in the 20k thread but now I will add to this topic

I think that having a womens football team at this current stage would be of no use and it would only be a time waste for us personally. How much people actually watch womens football? How many people off the street can name a womens footballer? Im sure popularity in womens football will rise one day, but I believe that day is not even close to us. I dont think its worth it.

Hi Fitzjames, haven't seen you on the Caf in ages. Then again i took 18 months out myself. :)

As to your point, i wholeheartedly agree, that we with our resources and catchment area don't have a women's side whilst other clubs who are not so blessed still manage to, well it hardly shows United in a good light. 70,000+ at Wembley the other day, like other sports it is an opportunity to be recognised.

women's football and women's sports in general in the UK are not supported to the same extent that women's sports in america are. That is just my opinion of course.

I wouldn't blame utd for not having a women's team more than I'd blame the culture of women's sport/football in the UK.

Eh? So because it wouldn't "benefit" you or your club, you don't think it would be worth it? What about the thousands of young girls who grow up supporting United. Don't you think they would kill for an opertunity to represent the club they love?

There's plenty who would watch it too I reckon and not for the misogynistic reasons you just started thinking of.

Pretty daft reasoning. So you're saying that no sport without a large fan following should be supported?

We wouldn't be having half the games in the Olympics by that logic.

Sorry for being so harsh but the world is all about greed, and if it doesn't benefit United then it probably wouldn't really happen. It would be great to see it happen one day and it would be massive for womens football but honesty I just can't see it happening.

Do you think it might one day become as popular as mens football or somewhere thereabouts?

Im just trying to say it would be very unpopular and a waste of time and money.

lolwut. feck it, It wouldn't be such a bad idea. Many people would watch it.

Better to have some nice asses, playing football, than spending millions on likes of Obertan and Bebe.

There was a side but they got rid of it about 7 or 8 years ago

This.

The official statement said that Manchester United would best serve the women's game by getting rid of the team and supporting it with their academies.

Absolute bollocks, they got rid of it because it wasn't getting the results of the Arsenal one and was giving United a bad image.

As an aside, most English women's teams are simply "paired" with the men's, and have little to nothing to do with the men's teams; not even the same owners.

There is so so so much wrong with that.

agreed. If I owned utd, one of the many things I would do within a few weeks of my ownership is bring back the women's team and lodge a massive bid for alex morgan. "*** fergie, no transfer money for you, i spent it all on her" :D

100% correct on this. It may not be fair, but the reality is womens sports leagues are not good business and I can't see why a club in debt would want to fund any sort of non-profitable endeavour. A womens sports league of any kind has never been successful, even those like the WPS and WNBA which is stocked with the best female talent around.

Also, attendance figures in the Olympics or World Cup isn't a trend towards womens sports gaining popularity. International football tournaments gets so many viewers, more so because of national pride than the love of the game itself. People will wear the kit, but when the tournament is all said and done, they're not going to watch football again until the next tournament.

I agree. Even if there's not much following, a United womens team is not a bad thing.

If you think it's a waste of time, dont watch it then. I'm sure there are others who do.

Regarding the financial part, I dont think it will cost anywhere near as much as the mens team to run. Just a wild guess here.

What if we scout few amazing female talents, almost good as Becks or Giggs ?

With all modern medical equipment of changing sex, we could produce a promising team without all the meaningless transfer speculations and agent fee bollocks.

Now tell me, women's team is bad for the economy.

I think we should bring them back. Women's football is on the rise again and I can't believe we haven't been a part of that progress.

We can get Giggsy to do some scouting for us in his spare time.

That's the spirit !

The Canadian US match I seen earlier, was one of the best games I've seen this year.

While it would be good, I don't see it happening because it doesn't make money. The Glazers aren't going to sacrifice money for it when we're in debt or they could be taking it out for themselves.

If we do, sign Alex Morgan. Please. <3

Heard that Arsenal consider getting rid of the men's team, as a result of not getting results, gives the club a bad image they say..

The women have been more entertaining than the men at the Olympics. This is partly because the goalkeepers are shit but in general the outfield players are more manly than any Premier League player when it comes to taking knocks.

Agreed

Don´t see why not. United had a basketball team once. I think it'd be cool if United were a multi-sport, multi-team club like many European clubs.

So for all those wanting this girls team, I can only assume you were all big fans of our now defunct ladies team?

Or did you even realise they existed?

They probably didn't or they were 14 when it was abolished.

It doesn't take much to run a team. Money is not the reason. It's at least not an excuse for a team like Manchester United when semi-pro teams can have both male and female teams all over Europe.

Because it was real easy to watch them play?

Just like i think Man. Utd. should not just consist of world class Brazilians with Japanese fans (though I like players and fans from Brazil and Japan), but must build on the local roots and people, just like I think Man Utd should have teams for local kids, not just national and international talent bought in when they,re 16+, just like I admire Ferguson for including even the Old Trafford janitor as an equal in the Man Utd Family instead of saying Wazza makes us the money, so he should have his own suite at the stadium - I think Man United should as a matter of course include all people of Manchester in their football factory, men or women, boys or girls. If I was a Manc girl seeing that City included girls and United excluded them, I would know where I was welcome also as support.
