A Look at Goalkeeper Options and Replacing De Gea

The reports state that De Gea has agreed a deal in principle but it's someone at the club who hasn't signed off on the deal.

My take on it is that the club want to move De Gea on but might be finding it difficult to sign a more established GK due to cost. So it has been reported that we either release De Gea and go for someone established like Onana. Or if money is a issue, then keep De Gea on a short term deal and sign Verbruggen. De Gea's contract expires in 14 days, so we will soon know if we either get a more established keeper like Onana or a young up and coming prospect like Verbruggen.

Stop moaning about bloody cost Utd seeing as you have already given up on Kane there is zero excuse for not buying GK

I reckon if the club was holding back the contract sign-off, there'd be a lot more noise from DDG's camp and we would hear links with other clubs (Saudi, MLS etc). I think the club would prefer that he signed an extension.

Ugh really

The wording is interesting, “potential” contract, I dunno man, we probably will keep him but it’s all so weird at this point

Get Onana, you'll get a few mistakes but he is an elite keeper.

Think it means we're genuinely looking to have money available for a new no.1 now that Kane looks like a pipe dream.

Would explain why we've waited so long and have yet to give him a new deal

Pay decrease and having to complete for a starting spot, maybe that's not that attractive to him and he's looking down other avenues. Plus his Mrs lives in Spain with his young child, so it's a tough call for him. Contract is always potential until it's agreed and signed.

Yeah has to be where big money is spent now we have decided against signing Kane

You get those from Ederson/Alisson too

Yep, comes with the territory of being more proactive then reactive. You get caught on the ball and up the field.

His positive fair outweighs the negative though.

All the best Dave. Time to part ways. He is a part of the furniture here but has stagnated and it’s time for us to move on.

DeGea and United have played this well and kept press intrusion out. United need a new goalkeeper and De Gea gets his last big contract (Saudi?). (run)

That would be the most positive interpretation of events. It makes no sense to retain him. And even less if he's haggling over a deal and the club needing to compromise. Outside of the elite clubs, what could he realistically get at this stage?

Saudi money

Just let him go FFS. Why are we letting this contract situation derail our transfer plans?

Been a great servant of the club. Arguably the best keeper in the world during his peak, or at the very least the most important to any team.

Was great to see him arrive as a 20 year old, overcome the doubters and become one of our most important players. Who can forget where it all started with that save against Mata’s freekick

The club should have offered a take it or leave offer around 150k a week. The fact TH has said he cant guarantee number one spot. 150k for a backup goalie is still ridiculous amount for a goalie.

Just have to bite the bullet and go for Costa or Onana. Can’t keep De Gea as backup on 150-200k a week, if he’s not considered good enough to be the No 1 then he has to go.

If he is on £375k a week that saves us £20m to put towards a new keeper.

Why are we even making an effort to keep him in the first place. We need to replace him and he won't be happy on the bench. It's good for both parties if he leaves.

ETH hopefully cancelled the new deal when he found out he’s getting that Jassim money

This is encouraging but I dont like the transfer fees being bandied around for Onana. 70m is a steep price to pay and we have been so guilty of overpaying for years, there has to be a limit to it. I'd rather we try and get him or Costa in that case for 50m. This gives us flexibility to still sign a ST and MF, with any additional incomings being dependent on sales.

I'd actually let DDG go then bring in Yann Sommer for 20m and still get Bart Verbruggen for 15m. Both can play the way ETH wants to play and Verbruggen will quickly take over from Sommer in 12 months. Both will also likely cost less in wages combined than say offering DDG 200k p.w.

I like that idea

50m in transfer/agents fees and 200k a week in wages.

60m in transfer/agents fees and 150k a week in wages.

Both of these would be a net neutral from an FFP and balance sheet perspective as retaining De Gea on 375k a week. It’s mental that we agreed that deal for him.

This just simply couldn't be more true.

To let such a mediocre goalkeeper earn as much as Haaland, not to mention more than the likes of Salah, De Bruyne, Alisson... and the list goes on and on and on and on...

And that's not hating De Gea, it's just facts.

Pure insanity.

UTD weren't offering £375k per week. If we were he would have signed. The contract offer is probably around the £150-£175 range, hence he is reluctant to take a 50% pay cut. I think he will go, but the big question is who replaces him.

I'm kind of surprised he hasn't signed even on those reduced terms. He'll be lucky to get that wage packet anywhere else.

He stands a decent chance in the Saudi League, they’re throwing money at over the hill players like it’s going out of style.

He doesn’t deserve an extension so just get rid of him.

ridiculous if we’re actually in talks with him.
