Team Cold Boy

Strategy is
My team will be playing a simple 4-4-2, with Keano in a more defensive position than Ballack in the center of the midfield. Ballack will also make late runs into the box ala Scholesy to meet the delightful crosses of Becks. Wiltord on the left will test the right back who is only decent at best and I think with his speed he'll be a real handful for any right back.

Ronaldo and Shevchenko are surely the best striking partnership of the whole game, it'll be a treat to see them play in tandem and I'm not sure how any opposition's defenders will be able to cope up with them. They will score for sure there is no doubt about it.

Lauren will receive some extra help from Becks on the right side to cope up with Overmars, let's not forget that Becks at work rate at his prime was exceptional.

MIDFIELD BATTLE:

In all I understand Its two against 3 in midfield but come on its BALLACK AND KEANE.Two of the best midfielders of the generation who not only become good players because of their determination/grit/stamina etc but also had ability, quality AND TALENT.Even if its 2 against 3 they will have enough work-rate to counter them. Also one of them is Riquelme who I love but he is not the best player when not in possession so Keane and Ballack will do a the job quite well

My bench:
M.Laursen
Edmilson
Ze Roberto
F.Morientes

shevchenko/ronaldo looks nice on paper, but I would wonder if they really would be a good partnership or not - both need to be the main man upfront.

How is Wiltord playing as left midfield for any team at the semi final stage?

Cold Boy started out with an unbalanced 4-3-2-1 where the right wing was the problem and halfway through started a transition to a 4-4-2 where the left wing was the problem. Picked Keane ahead of Pires hoping to get a win here and add Giggs...

As it turns out Giggs is long gone :(

442 is dated whoever the strikers are against a good 433 setup and Wiltord on the wing...yeah Cling Bak easily, even Gery Kelly STILL starting.

Kelly making the final of a fantasy tourno would be one of life's greatest mysteries, right up there with the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, whatever that was...

The really bizarre thing is that Jayvin's group stage team could probably give either a run for their money, let alone if he had added 3 players since...

Jayvin and I not making it past the group is baffling in all honesty.

With 3 players added each we would certainly have been pushing you right to the end.

CB is going to take this. Sure it might end up a draw but I think he has enough quality to progress to the final.

I have enough pushing as it is, no more needed :D

You were probably the hardest game I've had so far. The score didn't quite reflect that.

I never understood why you didn't stick to your intial tentative lineup:

--------Trezeguet---Salas
---------------Ortega
--------Rui Costa---De la Peña
-----------Van Bommel (or Ambrosini, not sure which it was)
Serginho--Puyol---Nesta---??????
--------------Peruzzi

Cling, any chance we can be privvy to the dressing room talk?

This thread is getting very mundane.

I was going to improvise for Cling Bak and say his individual instructions to Kelly would be to deal with whichever massive talent was on the opposition left-wing by 'Knacking him'.... then I realised it was only Wiltord

 Stop it, you may prompt Cold_Boy to go all 4-2-4 on him

His 4-2-4 killer tactic also features Wiltord... and benches Beckham for not being a winger

Thing is, no opponent has had one worth taking!

Two time PL team of the year, I might add. Don't underestimate him. He isn't Cafu or Zanetti, but he's solid. I can't remember him being turned apart in his heyday. I said before, but where PL right backs go, only Neville has been in the PL team of the year more times.

Team talk... Well, similar to last time out. Riquelme will pull the strings and everyone will assume - and probably wet themselves - that he won't be doing a lot of tracking back. Good job, I hope he doesn't either. Vieira will win a lot of the ball with Mendieta and Riquelme will dictate things further up the pitch. He can pressure the oppo's deepest lying midfielder, but he's in the team to create. He is given that licence.

Giggs and Figo are no more, which makes McManaman and Overmars arguably the best pair of wingers in the competition. It's no secret that they've been asked to get at their full-backs and bring the ball infield too to slide Henry in. I feel they should have the better of their markers and we can expect both Capdevila and Kelly to come forward and support this.

We'll have a job on our hands with Shevchenko and Ronaldo to deal with, but fortunately we've brought in Cannavaro to partner Carvalho which makes for a tidy defensive pairing.

I'm aware, it is still bizarre, you may even win the thing with him

Now you are pushing it. Stay tidy at the back, the rest of the pitch is a stroll.

I don't expect to win it, but I'm going OK.

Today's opponent is no different, Cold_Boy's full-backs are hardly worth taking. Whilst my midfield is good, I'd still be looking at Keane. But passing up the chance of Ronaldo almost seems a mistake.

You don't really need either of them but I think you'd be mad to turn down Ronaldo when you've already got Mendieta and Vieira.

Player by player I think COld Boy wins this. Keane, Stam, Ronaldo are arguably the 3 best in their respective positions. Cling Bak's team is just far more balanced

Who would you drop for Keane? Ronaldo's the most obvious choice. You could even play Henry in one of the wide spots.

The logical choice would be Ronaldo in, then Henry out to the left, Overmars out to the right. With Keane you could put him in the middle with Vieira and stick Mendieta on the right mid/wing position, but I don't think it's quite as natural.

He should drop either Riquelme or Mendieta, they are hardly compatible. Well, I'd drop Riquelme as he's probably the most overrated South American who ever set foot in Europe. His natural level was Villarreal where they built the team around him and where he was the biggest star.

Got to take Ronaldo. In for Mcmanaman, Henry to the left, Overmars to the right. You'd be pushing Anohan I think!

Everyone is talking about what player Cling will take, I wouldn't assume this match is over yet as there have been some big swings in voting.

But personally I just find Cold Boys teams too unbalanced - he has picked the big name players rather than ones that will fit a good system, its the Real Madrid Galactico way of thinking and TBF it is often a vote winner. But once you get to this stage then everyone has big names all over the pitch so balance becomes more important.

Considering Crustanoid has more or less acted as ClingBak's assistant, can I vote to make my vote count?
;)

Has he?!

Cheers Crustanoid! Whatever you've done, it might have worked!

Yes, the fateful Mendieta inside right position... Come on Cling, you know it is right...

The first suggestion is what I was thinking.

Ahhh well think, my run comes to an end here.

And unfortunate to be so behind imo.

Brwned is no pushover mate. Shame the Brazilian Army didn't advance, Ronaldo the journeyman is causing everyone so much trouble!

Hopefully I can face Cling and Ronaldo continues with his losing streak

So after the tactical change and substitution , I am actually almost equal.

Tactical blunder to start with.

I admit the boys played well but It was my mistake that I started with a very ambitious formation.

You lacked creativity in the centre of the park, told you so. Ballack and Keane, great players that they are, do not inspire much in that sense. Whatever few chances you would create Ronaldo or Shevchenko were good for, having both was overkill, it almost looked like they were getting in each others' ways.

Wiltord was destroying you as well, somewhat unfairly given the oppo, but in a team with suspect creativity that was a bigger crime than Cling having an equally average fullback.

You shouldn't give up though, there are plenty of would-be voters out there. All you need is to keep the thread moving and keep your fingers crossed it will be for the best.

Why isn't the poll closed?

Is it a 2 day poll?

I had thought it would get over last night.

Doesn't this mean that you win on penalties?

;)

Cold Boy should be winning this in my eyes as player for player he has the better side.

He has messed around with the formation a bit, granted, but still feel his side would win out of the two.

That just reinforces the point that most think team balance matters as much as team quality.
