Strong earthquake hits Myanmarpublished at 14:13

14:13BREAKING

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck Myanmar, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says.

The tremors were felt in China and Thailand, with footage on social media showing people evacuating buildings in Bangkok and gathering in the streets.

We're working to bring you more information on this breaking news story as we get it.

It’s looked very scary from my country. I was working at my building and it felt frightening. A lot of people in SEA can feel it.

Stay safe. My thai friends also notified me about this.
One of my relatives is in Myanmar, I hope he's safe. I've reached out to his family to contact him.

man, I thought it was big, I’m in chiang mai, I woke up and it felt like I was swaying on a huge boat

My Dad is in a long term care resort in Chang Mai. He was completely unconcerned but that says more about him than the quake

My brother in Bangkok on the other hand is a lot more panicked as he currently has 50 students outside in 40c heat waiting for any aftershocks.

God bless the people of and in Myanmar.

Seems like an irresponsible move to take students outside in that kind of heat to do shots.

I can only dread to think of the carnage in Myanmar.. this must cause 100 of thousands victims. It will be incomprehensible.

There's a video on Sky of it coming down live. Terrifying. A high rise building fell in seconds like a deck of cards

So far there is very little information from Myanmar. With them being controlled by military after the coup...

Just watched this, fecking hell, it just goes.

Jesus, scary stuff. The music is a bit overboard.

You're nearer the border I guess. Didn't everything stay upright ok?

Are you from Thailand or of Thai descent mr P?

Negative. My brother moved out there to teach about 12 years ago.

My Dad has dementia and he’s in a resort which specialise in care - quarter of a cost of care in the UK, twice the number of carers and he’s in a beautiful place with a great quality of life. Would recommend!

Which province?

My brother or my dad? Probably said as much as I’d like to say if I’m honest.
Sorry for not reading carefully. Yes, Chiang Mai is quite a livable and quality(for living)city with plenty of tourist attractions(with their unique cultures in a lot of departments). However, one downside is that it has quite a lot of air pollution (PM 2.5).

I assume so here as it’s a way off from the epicenter but I haven’t been outside yet, most of the loose crap in my apartment went flying

But I went back to sleep thinking it was a 5 quake though (initial reports), and it wasn’t so bad, but just seen the new reports of how bad it actually was and holy crap

My eldest son is in Thailand and has been for three weeks. On Tuesday night he got spiked in a bar in Ko Samui and then got attacked by 3 Irish lads when he got outside. He managed to fight them off and when the Police came he had dropped one of the lads and was fighting back against the other two so they presumed he was the instigator.

Thankfully the bar owner came out and said he didn't start it so he wasn't arrested but he had some nasty injuries where they had been kicking him on the floor so he had to go to hospital. His toxicology report came back and he had meth and heroin in his system proving he was spiked but then had to spend 6 hours speaking to the doctors and police giving statements.

Because of this he stayed in Ko Samui and didn't return to Bangkok to get his flight home as planned. It also meant I couldn't speak to him yesterday and had only spoken to him while he was on his way to the hospital in the early hours of the morning.

When I got up this morning I couldn't get hold of him and saw the news so searched the net and this is the first page that came up....

Obviously I absolutely shit myself thanks to GB News and their disgustingly misleading headline. Bangkok has been seriously affected but according to reports there are 81 people missing in Bangkok not 100,000. That number is the highest expected overall and the main impact and loss of life is expected to be in Myanmar.

Anyway my lad has phoned and told me he's ok, updates me and also changed his flight. Instead of leaving from Bangkok as planned he's going from Ko Samui to Singapore then Singapore to London.

I'm just relieved he's ok. I've never been in a situation like this where I've seen these disasters and had to be worried about someone I love being ok yet seeing on TV somewhere they are supposed to be in total chaos with many dead or injured and possibly many more buried under the rubble.

It was a tough few hours being completely helpless to do anything being so far away and having nobody to contact. As it turns out he slept through it and didn't feel a thing. Bellend.

Sadly so many weren't as lucky and I just hope the numbers aren't as high as first predicted and certainly not anywhere near what GB News said in that article linked above. fecking wankers.

Jesus. Scary. What’s the word on casualty numbers I wonder

Saw on the news they reckon about 8 died in that building, as it was under construction and there's maybe another 90 trapped under rubble.

Overall though it's probably too early to get a full number.

that's quite the nerve wracking ordeal for you, and him.
they were all probably fighting over a ladyboy. kids, eh?

My cousin is in Myanmar, thankfully he is safe. He went there just a few days ago for work stuffs. When the news appeared on Thai news his family couldn't even contact him, we all feared the worst. Hours later he called back and told them he's okay, there was a period where even the internet didn't work. He's planning a flight back home now. Thankfully some of the airlines are still operational.

First the civil war and now this... there has been no break for the people of Myanmar. They have it really tough.

 Yup, kids. I'm just glad he's ok. I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of visiting him in a Thai prison or worse after this morning.

My chef at my pub spent just under three years in a Thai prison for a couple of joints worth of weed ffs. fecking chefs are worse than kids.

I have a fever and as I finally got to sleep I was awoken to strange noises and a weird feeling. Got out of bed and I was off balance. I figured it was the fever making me wobbly but then I realised it was a fecking earthquake and the whole building was swaying! Never been so scared shitless in my life!
Running down the 11 flights of stairs felt like an eternity

Horrible news and that video of the collapsing skyscraper  . What a horrible thing to go through for the affected, let's hope the actual victim count is much lower than the first estimates (I've read from 1k to 10k :( ).

I'd almost say they got lucky in that particular case that the earthquake hit now, and not in a year or so - imagine that building going down when actually in use. No way this built to be earthquake-safe with how quickly it went down.
It's obviously still a terrible tragedy, the poor workers that must have been in there.

What's really worrying is that we're only getting news out of Thailand, nothing from Myanmar where I imagine the devastation will be horrendous.

It's like the Boxing day Tsunami where all the news came out of Thailand and Sri Lanka initially, whereas the place hit the worst was Banda Aceh in Indonesia, which was totally destroyed, but we heard nothing from there for a few days, because basically nothing was left.

had 5 missed calls from my parents after, the quake woke me up but went back to sleep for a few more hours

Must've been scary. Thailand seems quite prone to buildings and road bridges collapsing even without earthquakes.
I'm supposed to be going to Bangkok in May -my employer has two events planned but no idea if they'll go ahead now.

I think the building isn't ready yet, it was still under construction.. probably missing some weights here and there that's why it collapsed so easily.
