5 years without a trophy - Further away than ever

To think even past it managers in Mourinho and van gaal were able to win trophies at the club. Ole has been hiding behind the excuses of "progress" and "building something special".

I think following the weekends results the league title has gone for another year.

This leads fans to a dilemma: it is pretty well known that at Man Utd, since Moyes, failure to get into the following season's champions league is a non-negotiable minimum tartget and you lose your job if you fail at that. It's been made more complex of course as winning the Europa also achieves that target.

So here is the dilemma: would Utd. fans accept a total collapse in the last 2 group games so Ole can be eased out sooner.... or would you prefer to drop into the Europa competition again knowing it could keep him in post well into 2022 especially if he wins it and then stays in the job for the next season?

Qualifying & progressing would be ideal of course, because winning the CL is also a route to qualification as holders, but do fans really think Utd. could win the big cup this season?

I put the radiogram on this morning and just as it warmed up the announcer says.... we have breaking news at 7am..... and I thought: here we go, this has got to be about Ole Gunnar Solskjær.... But it was mandatory covid-vaccines for front-line health workers.

I really think if Manchester Utd. don't act in this international break, this thread will run and run (with a small edit to the title). Other clubs are acting now and soon excellent candidates will end up at lesser teams & that would not be good for the club.

He’s not going to win anything.

We’ve all been so lucky to see our team win countless trophies over the years, most football fans don’t get to see their teams win anything.

I can deal with a few years of drought, happens to every football club & it won’t last forever.

If we end up in this cycle for 10/15 years then so be it, I will still enjoy every moment supporting the club.

It's not the lack of trophies but the utter shitshow running the club and the clown miles out of his depth that's my issue

It's a shame Utd. can't meet San Marino in the FA Cup final, that would solve this problem!

I think the FA Cup might offer salvation. Remind me, does that get you into the Europa Cup if you win it?

Not if the top 3 take it seriously, oh unless you meant under another manager in which case then maybe

You are speaking as if we are capable of winning that trophy? We aren't.
We'd probably have to beat either LFC or MCFC and we just got thumped by both of them. Absolute humiliation and capitulation.
Now, if we change our manager quickly, then we might be in with a chance, but the Glazers are likely to hang on to their "human shield" for a while, yet.

Make or break time: this weekend will decide if Man Utd. can really contend for PL 2021-22 or if the CL and the FA Cup are the only realistic targets to break this hoodoo.

P.S. I ask here cos I'm really puzzled (and I use this thread most) - why in mid-week were a whole bunch of 'would you take X,Y or Z as the new manager....' threads all locked to further replies simultaneously?

When I saw that I assumed something had happened regarding '#OLEout' and someone new was definitely on the way in, but a look on the news websites told me that was not the case, so why all the locked threads?
You're about 1 month behind in that assessment.

I’m confused. So if Utd win they can ‘really contend’ for the PL title? That seems a bit of an overreach!

The Liverpool and City matches have shown the expectations for the current season and the level under Ole.

I would kick him out right away, but for some reason I feel the Board don't want to pay his termination, which is kinda ridiculous given the much higher fees they pay for unused transfers like Sancho or VDB.

Man Utd and the rest of that sentence just dont go together.

Imagine that logic from our board, being too afraid to pay for ole's termination but in return we will lose 100 million in lingard and pogba by not sacking him.

But it might yet happen.

Now the dust has settled, is there any chance the interim manager may win the CL or the FA Cup this season? Or would there be a better chance if the club acted quicker and went for a permanent manager straight away?

Following the news of today, do people think this threads days are numbered?

Under Ole we came within a penalty shoot-out of winning a major trophy (albeit, it was the Europa League, but the point still stands how close we came to winning it)
Now when you consider that a trophy was within touching reach, and we had a manager that (with the greatest respect to Ole) was out of his depth at this level, then imagine what we can do with a manager who is NOT out of his depth at this level.

Of course football throws up a lot of surprises... but don't be surprised if we deliver a trophy under a manager who is more than capable of doing so.

It's really hard to say what impact the new manager will have. He has a good record as manager but I'm not sure this group has it in them to turn around this season.

Where I'm unsure is around the current coaching setup. Will rangnick bring any coaching staff in with him, or will he just work with the coaches already at utd? Not sure we have the level of coaching staff required for a big change in style or work rate. Most these players need a complete regime change in order to reset the current mindset and tactical style they've become used to.

In a knock out competition anything can happen, Di Matteo won the CL. Hiddink was robbed against Barcelona in the semis and Utd looked like going into the Europa league and suddenly won the group.

I think it’s a smart appointment providing they give Ralf the chance to make actual changes at the club. The whole reason they’re in such a mess is constantly looking at the past and comparing everything to SAF.

Years without the PL and CL are the only things that really matter. If we had won the FA cup or league cup in that time would anyone honestly look back on it more favourably?

Yes?

I am finally going to be excited seeing a United game, since Ole first season with that insane run I wasn't so excited.

For months I've been almost sad to see it, knowing that it would crap on my weekends and maybe my midweek.

Oh so we're Arsenal now.

I can imagine it now. 'I think we should give Ole another year guys. After all, he won the league cup back to back.'

Tell that to all those cheering this

You mean those same fans that were cheering the managers sacking the very next day. Pretty much exemplifies the value of such trophies.

A team with our statue measures success by league titles and champions league trophies. Domestic cups are a nice bonus. It's a nice day out, but that's it. It's like the IBO in boxing. No top class boxing really cares about winning it unless its on top of the belts they already have.

Can I ask a favour of the forum moderators (I ask here as my point can go here but I'd rather put it in another one). Recently many, many threads have been locked-up, fair enough - keep things focused and tidy - however, it is good if the mod states in the final post the reasoning behind it and that often happens. I've just been reading: "Maybe after Sir Alex, the United dressing room has simply become far too powerful?" and I think it is one of the most interesting discussions that was going on, also possibly a reason for no trophies in 4 years and more importantly, no titles since Sir Alex stepped down.

Can we please be told what was the problem with that thread that caused it to be closed to further replies?

Edit: So after the end of the match earlier, I thought I would add to the 'so its all Ronaldos fault' thread, but that's also been locked too! What's going on, why are we being blocked from expressing our opinions?

Well, that was a shock (West Ham vs Chelsea) plus a great win in mid-week for Man Utd.

I'm certain that Liverpool will suffer a dip when they lose key players to the African Cup of Nations, especially the excellent Mohammed Salah.

Man City are Man City, by which I mean they always have the capability to turn potential success into comedy gold: e.g. a weird team selection in the 2021 champions league final to going ways back to when the players kept the ball in the corner thinking they were safe from relegation, when in fact they actually needed to score a goal.

So given all of that, could this seasons PL still be a chance of silverwear?

Who would be good in the knockout round of the CL for Utd’s progression? Is the draw tomorrow?

I really think it unfair if say City play on whilst Utd. games are postoned (omicron) its hard to play catchup and I fear this new variant will hinder Utds recent prgress under the new boss. Shame on you PL.
