40s Retro Football Fantasy Draft | Finished

Was about to post my pick, then realised Skizzo was before me.

Jesus.. how can anyone think that Dragan would still be available. I was surprised that he did not go in round 1 itself.

I actually don't have any Germans on my list . I guess we're talking about one? Well there's one exception, but I won't mind if you or Joga or someone else pick him, I just want him to play a part. I never planned on picking any Germans at all actually, just felt forced to pick Müller and Vogts because they were so clearly the best available picks at the time.

There is one that I want pretty badly but have no urgent need of right now. Hopefully, I can snag him in the later rounds.

@Balu I'm hoping you appreciate our next pick. You and @Joga Bonito Can Hopefully appreciate it :)

Hope it's not the one I want :(

Or at least we can get the player that many, Beckenbauer included, called the best German player of the 70s.

Flohe_FC_Double2_1978_kl.JPG

Heinz Flohe

Some also say he was the greatest technician in history of German football. When Flohe was in ball possession it was impossible to take it away without fouling him. He was brillant technician, excellent dribbler, fast and strong as well, very endurable with powerful shot. He always had surprising ideas, very inventive and tricky player, but also great passer as well especially his crosses were dangerous and often lead to goals.

As he nonchalantly brought it up
They recently made a documentary about him, which is supposed to be really great. Haven't seen it though. No idea if it's available somewhere for you guys with English subtitles, but maybe worth looking for.

@Gol123

Gotta head out in a couple of hours. Hope Gol picks his guy by then... :(

I'll have to see if I can track it down. Cheers for that.
It's called "Heinz Flohe - Der mit dem Ball tanzte" . That's the German trailer:

If you can find the match against Mexico at the World Cup in '78, that's probably his best ever for the nationalteam. Just be careful, if you find comparisons between him and modern German players. They love to compare him to one who isn't rated that highly on the Caf these days ;).

Ricardo Elvio Pavoni Cúneo (born July 8, 1943 in Montevideo) is an Uruguayan former football (soccer) defender who played the majority of his career for Club Atlético Independiente in the Argentine First Division.

Biography

Elvio Pavoni was born in Montevideo, Uruguay and began his footballing career with the Montevidean club Defensor. Disillusioned with life as a footballer, he was on the point of abandoning the game completely and going to work in a CASINO as a croupier until he was convinced to play football for Independiente of Argentina. Undeniably one of Independiente's all-time stars, the left-sided full-back has been described as a natural leader and the perfect man-marker. He was also responsible for scoring 57 goals.

He arrived to Independiente at age 21 to replace Tomás Rolan, another Uruguayan who had suffered a SERIOUS INJURY. No-one could have predicted that Pavoni would make people forget about Rolan and would be part of one of the most memorable periods in the club's history. His first match for Independiente was on March 24, 1965 in a Copa Libertadores match. Independiente beat Boca Juniors by two goals to nil.

For twelve seasons (1965–1976) he was idolised by the Independiente fans. He was particularly remembered for his powering runs along the left wing, putting away free kicks with his left foot and for his frequent last-ditch efforts to clear the ball from the goal-line. He is considered by many to be the archetypal Uruguayan footballer.

Pavoni (affectively known as "el Chivo") won many honours during his career, including the Argentine first division championships three times, the Copa Libertadores 5 times, the Copa Interamericana on three occasions and one Copa Intercontinental. He was also a member of the Uruguayan squad that took part in the World Cup of 1974, in West Germany. Since retirement, he has been involved with the club as a trainer with reserve and youth teams. He has also been caretaker manager of the first team on several occasions.

Thanks. Although not thanks because you picked Bulgarelli. Really thought I found an overlooked gem there.

Aye, we were 50/50 between Clodoaldo and Bulgarelli - didn't expect him to last back down :p

Brilliant pick mate.

When Balu said he had got the last top class midfielder in Benetti I thought maybe everybody had forgotten about Bulgarelli. Then Gio sends me his pick and its Bulgarelli. It also kick-started a wave of midfielder's going leaving me in a bit of a pickle.

Yeah, Benetti was our back up to Bulgarelli but we were always shooting for at least one of him and Clodoaldo since we started planning it.

Not that you're in a bad position with feckin Van Hanegem and Overath :D.

You also took Matosas as well who we had penned in (he played with Figueroa) so I'd say we're about par for the course.

What can I say, I'm a total football guy :D

I think @Invictus took more of my targets then you and Gio though. Only really Bulgarelli who I really wanted as a first choice (Other then the first 3 obvious choices).

@Balu already has a keeper, so I'll just post my pick and go to bed. José Ángel Iribar, Bilbao legend and my Euro draft keeper, is back in goal for Team ctp. Please tag crappy when it's his turn.
