expected to be convened in May, the papal conclave will elect a successor to pope Francis.

According to Wikipedia, the frontrunners and papabili include:

Who’ll take the tiara?

I’d say that whoever takes over will be inheriting a terrible squad and so we can’t expect miracles, but miracles are sort of their thing…

The should go with the third guy on that list, a monkey as a pope would be good comedy.

A cool outside candidate would be super young (for papal standards) Portuguese poet-cardinal José Tolentino Calaça de Mendonça. He’s from Madeira so fully expecting him to do SIUUUUU in front of St Peter Square

Can’t wait for the swimsuit competition.

I agree, I’d like another African pope after such a long break, but all the major African cardinals are a bit old and some big names are over 80, so not eligible to vote. Tagle would be a good choice

Another?

Is this some throwback to some ancient Pope originating from North Africa before the Arab conquests? :D

Please god, no. We'd get a full week of nothing else on tv other than him.

A conservative priest harshly criticized Pope Francis’ “woke” ideology hours after the pontiff’s death.

Father Gerald Murray, a regular commentator on Fox News, told the news network Monday that Francis steered the church towards a leftist and woke direction during his papacy, and mused on whether or not the next pope would have a similar belief system.

“Do we want to continue with Pope Francis’ basically leftward radical movement in the church, or do we want to return to John Paul II and Benedict, which was to affirm doctrine in the face of critiques, answer modern questions,” he said.

He added that the cardinals need to seriously ask themselves: “Do we want to continue in a basically, sad to say, woke direction in the Catholic Church, or do we want to return to an affirmation of the faith based on what the apostles handed down?”

Apparently Jesus and the Apostles were not woke.

Shame on that priest. Francis was widely misunderstood, making him an easy target for those who want to take the Church back to "the old days". He didn't always express himself clearly and some things were literally lost in translation, but he was in fact always firm on doctrine and didn't deviate.

A lot of good people are saying it should be Trump.

Especially the most important doctrine in the church, protecting pedophile priests.

I've seen Peter Turkson and Mario Grech also mentioned as possible candidates.
Seems Peter Erdo will be one of the leading conservative candidates. Think Tagle will be an interesting option if they want someone of a similar ilk.

But the case for Turkson is interesting, given the high number of believers in Africa. He's the former head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, committed conservative who have been vocal advocates for peace in their respective countries. DR Congo’s Fridolin Ambongo, archbishop of Kinshasa, also mentioned but seems less likely.

Marco van Basten should get it.

He has some experience with public speaking and he wasnt afraid of playing young kids when he managed our national team.

Technically the Pope would have to a Jewish man if they wanted to take it back to the old days.

every time this happens from now on I'll be imagining some sort of Dan Brown-esque crime caper going on behind the scenes

....
Apologies, he sounds like one of our lot.

What are the odds that the new guy won't be yet another reactionary geriatric, pedophile-defending waste of space with a view on women and LGBT+ straight out of the 15th century?
Which of the touted candidates could be considered progressive as far as that term can be applied to the catholic church at all?
