It's one of those days when I wish public service was mandatory before you even stand a chance at entering in politics.
Watching stuff like this and all that happens in the US Politics, Trumps impeachment and low IQ Republicans threads, I can't help but wonder if there's any way back to some sort of decency for American politics. Perhaps there never was any in the first place and the internet and social media just highligt it now, but it does seems like the Trump presidency has had a a profound impact on the people elected to govern and the way they behave.

This trend is honestly a lot more scary than the prospect of another Trump presidency. People were shocked at January 6th, but many have gotten over their shock and mistakenly believed that it proved that the system is working. To have any sort of successful political career now as a Republican, you basically have to claim that the election was stolen. It would be bad enough if that meant only members of Congress, but it means people who directly affect elections at a state level. It means the exact people who last time wouldn't allow the coup, but next time will. The next time another Jan 6 happens, it's probably going to succeed.
Say it with me: America is fecked.
The norms need to start referring to these people as domestic enemies of American freedom.
As I mentioned in the civil war thread, you guys won't get another chance in 2024. When Trump realises that he can't beat biden, he will set in motion anything and everything to bring down the electoral process. He had to be held to account for 2020, now he's got a free pass and these guys know they have a chance to essentially dismiss all valid election results that they don't win.

Damn, I hope he will take enough time to fully recover. If he has to, he can use imaginative ways to campaign from home during his recovery. The current POTUS did about that for the first half of his presidential campaign (during the worst of the pandemic) after all.
