But according to you, calling a sport boring is a "ridiculous" thing to say and requesting that commentators actually explain certain rules at the Olympics is also a "ridiculous" thing to say, even though this is the only time when many people will watch some of the niche sports. This is also despite the fact that commentators in other sports often explain rules even for regular watchers such as during F1 for example

I don’t think that what you said was outrageous at all. It is clear to everyone that there is an insane amount of skill involved but as a viewer I feel a bit lost out there basically not knowing half the time what exactly is going on. It is interesting to watch in terms of the drama but I’m not a fan of sports in which the judges decide the score and then the commentators don’t even say why they got that
I don't think there's a lot of understanding required to be entertained by the gymnastics, I might be generalizing a lot but I used to believe gymnastics and athletics are some of the sports people look forward the most in olympics. At least my perception was that those sports were more popular than swimming by the audience who watches the thing at home without being experts or involved in any sports.
Then as for the commentators that is something that can be hit or miss, not necessarily make the whole thing boring but they can make something less enjoyable. Like sometimes they're not very savvy about the sport their narrating and they will have some retired athlete or expert in the sport to comment on the technical aspects of said sport and make everything more comprehensible. When that's not the case and the commentator has little knowledge about the sport I just hate it and would prefer them to shut up as they would just make some pointless remarks or just say stuff that is plain wrong. So yeah, it's very hit or miss depending the transmission you're watching.

1. Ippon: A full throw in which a contestant throws his opponent to the mat with "considerable force and speed" so the opponent lands "largely on his back." An ippon is also awarded when a contestant immobilizes his opponent with a grappling hold-down for 20 seconds, or when an opponent gives up or passes out. An ippon immediately ends the match. Equivalent to a knockout in boxing or a pin in wrestling. Referee's hand signal: arm straight up.
2. Waza-ari: A throw which shows power and superiority but isn't clear enough to be an ippon, either because the opponent didn't land "largely on his back" or because the throw lacked speed or force. Waza-ari is also awarded for immobilizing an opponent for 15 seconds or more, but less than 20 seconds. Earning two waza-aris in a match is equivalent to an ippon and will immediately end the match. Referee's hand signal: arm out at shoulder level from the side.
3. Yuko: Usual definition is "almost waza-ari." A yuko is awarded for a throw that is "partially lacking" in two of the three elements of an ippon: putting the opponent on his back, speed of throw, force of throw. A common yuko is throwing an opponent on his side, as opposed to on his back. A yuko is also given for immobilizing an opponent with a hold for 10 seconds or more, but less than 15 seconds. No number of yukos equal a waza-ari or an ippon in the final tabulation of the match's outcome. Referee's hand signal: arm 45-degrees out from the side.

- most know but my son plays at a reasonably high level and I know many of the Australian players, particularly the men. although the main female goalie is married to the coach of his club when he is back in AU.Only interesting men's game today is Italy vs US although that group is likely to just be about who finishes where in the top 4. You suspect Japan will be joining South Africa in not advancing from the group.
In the other group Australia vs Serbia and Croatia vs Montenegro on Saturday could be interesting after the Aussies beat Croatia and the other game being a fierce regional rivalry.
Australia's win against Croatia (and expectations) has been the biggest news of the comp so far. Although Spain 's men have had two huge wins so far and may well progress far in the comp.
In the women's comp Australia vs Spain is the big game tomorrow and could decide that group. Group B is wide open after the US lost to Hungary - their first loss in forever.

Boring is of course in the eye of the beholder.
I do think you have a point about the commentary. My favourite sport, water polo, is a case in point. The rules are often counterintuitive to the uninitiated and required explaining for a casual viewer to understand and without that understanding the enjoyment is reduced and it tends to look like brawling in the water whereas it is a hugely technical sport and also requires amazing levels of fitness and swimming ability. My son's mate, a former world record holder in the 200m free, once played a fairly low level game for fun with my son and ended up vomiting at the side of the pool at the end. Partly because there are different types of fitness of course but .....

Australia finished third(!) behind China and the US in the 4x200 free. All three under the WR. Ledecky with a big charge to win silver for the US. Big shock Aussies didn’t win that, Titmus nowhere near as dominant as expected
That race was wild. My god Ledecky is fast. I thought she’d passed the Chinese swimmer for a second there.
My favourite moment of the Olympics so far that race and it didn't even involve a brit winning a medal.

Great to know about your son, the club I swim has also a waterpolo team but it requires a different skill set than swimming. Like a lot tougher with the constant contact, sometimes I've played against the teens or the girls team but even then I end up all bruised and sore the next day. It's really not a sport for me but I like to watch it.
Yup, I can see that happening and that's what I waas talking about. Being a strong swimmer doesn't necessarily transfer to waterpolo, the main difference for me is the swimming technique; in swimming is all about technique and efficiency, you want to maintain your body above the water and hold your head down in order to reduce drag. In waterpolo you have to keep your head high almost all the time and swimming with that position is super demanding, it's not very efficient so that alone would deplete your stamina quite quickly and we're not yet to the part where the other guy is drowning you and kicking your body and crotch underwater while trying to control the damn ball.
The first time I played against people who actually practiced waterpolo it felt like a truck hit me and they were going easy on me. Since then I was scared to play even against girls and would just pass the ball as quickly as I could but they would still beat me and drown me. I think you also need to be very aggressive and some kind of masochist.

There is a mixed medley relay left! I just became aware of it today when a caster talked about it. I'm really excited at that event as it will be interesting to see which gender each country assigns for each style. I think USA and Australia should be favorites as they have strong swimmers in almost every style with both genders and Great Britain should be winning a medal as long as they stick with Adam Peaty in the breaststroke.
United States will certainly put Dressel in the freestyle but Chalmers from Australia was almost as fast so while United States should win on paper it could also affect the swimmers having to swim from behind and as not every country is going to use the same configuration there are going to be a lot of change in positions throughout the race. At least that's what I'm expecting.
