So I had to rewatch the latter parts of debate as I skipped @Carolina Red 's drinking game and just went straight to the logical conclusion as fast as possible. For all the outrageous stuff that was said I think it was the last segment on voting that was the most chilling. To hear the sitting president refuse to tell his supporters to be peaceful, and to refuse to promise he would concede if he loses was terrifying! It is all things he has said before, but those were rallies, this was an official debate.

Also, anyone who uses the words "strong" and "confident" to describe Trump's performance can go do one as they are outing themselves.
I’ll be honest. The last bit of the debate gets a bit hazy in my memory as well. There is a lot of whiskey missing from the jar this morning.

This is the equivalent of a fluke like Hashim Rahman winning the heavy weight title with no expectations and then completely combusting when having to defend it.

No. I've been debating for many many years and trust me, the winner of a debate is all about who the audience 'perceives' was able to get their message across to them, even if that message was less than factual. If you look at Obama's first debate with Romney, you'd see what I'm talking about. If you can throw out 20 falsehoods and I can't or don't have the time nor information to rebut most of them, the audience would then be left to think that I'm likely telling the truth. Debating is all about understanding psychology and behaviours in groups as well.
Who the feck are this audience? Last night wasn't a debate. It was an unhinged individual screaming like a petulant child who only spoke in hypotheticals. It was a shit show. And regarding the 1st Obama Romney debate. Romney basically took Obama's positions in that debate and returned to true Republican form the other two and got his clock cleaned.

Trump won this debate by a country mile. He looked confident and authentic while Biden looked fake and nervous.

Maybe Biden becomes more confident for next debates.

But I didn't like how Trump was a lot of times not able to speak his argument/question to the end.
What debate did you watch?

Biden can get very scrappy and aggressive (too much at times) but he was clearly instructed not to legitimize Trump s yelling. You got a glimpse of that in moments when he told him to shut up. He can and should get more dirty a bit though - just like he demolished Palin before.

I agree Biden needs to keep up laughing off Trump s antics and get him fired up. Second half of debate was just Trump old man yelling.

I expect Harris to be the true aggressor and call out Pence to appeal to the dangers to our democracy his buddy in the WH represents.

Biden's objective going in wasn't to wipe the floor with Trump (which is literally impossible given how divided the country is), it was simply to look relatively normal, in contrast to Trump's insanity - which I think he successfully did.

if I were a person on the fence, after that debate I'd be more worried about Biden's ability to last 4 yrs. He looked very old, hesitated and mumbled too much at times. He does give of a more presidential aura about him, but I mean in a debate with Trump that was very weak.Trump just makes claim after claim, there was no response to most of them, if you don't pull him up on them then people esp undecided assume he's telling the truth, which as evidence shows he doesn't.Trump's figures re manufacturing jobs was off, hit him hard on that, that's a major factor for potential voters. I don't know enough about Biden, maybe that's not his personality to be combative, but you want a bit of fire in your prospective leader. Hopefully lessons learnt on both sides for the next debate as that was a disgrace.

This this... this. I am tired of seeing crap like Trump was dominant, Biden was timid etc. You can't debate a dog. Thanks to the MAGA crowd who tried to convince us Biden has dementia, all he had to do was look like a normal human being. The only other way this could have gone was for Biden to turn insane. I keep seeing Obama, Harris etc could have done better. I am not so sure. This was a semi-competent man taking the stage with a raving lunatic.

No need to be aggressive, I wasn't speaking about last night's audience. That wasn't a debate, it was a shit-show and I totally agree. What I'm saying is that there are different tactics during debates that don't require you to tell the truth to come out with a perception of winning. Regarding this 'debate' Biden cannot speak to Trump, he needs to speak to the audience.

The baffling thing is that it seemed obvious that whenever Biden was just laughing at him, Trump didnt like it. Clearly for all his bluster, it is incredibly easy to get under his skin - play on it a bit and let him self destruct, before moving back to the high ground.

Narcissism. Biden needs to do three things in the next 'debates"

1. Speak to the camera ONLY.
2. Laugh at Trump when he's speaking.
3. Don't answer Trump's questions directed at him, only the moderators questions.

Totally agree with this.

Why are we even going through this 'debate' post mortem? Trump's driver is keeping himself out of prison and to that point, he'd do anything and burn anywhere to achieve that outcome. 4 more years of his Presidency is his only way of doing that.

The opposition in the US is so incredibly strange. You have a guy against you who can literally let nothing slide. Not a single thing. (Remember the penis/hands debate in the 2016 primaries?) And you make no efforts to use that against him? Zero?

You have to wonder what his end game is? I mean, in four years the spectre of those investegations is still going to be there. If he was smart he’d resign now and let Pence pardon him before Biden takes office. He’s buggered either way.

Been there. Had a bad day at work and woke up to a scotch bottle (brand new) that had a significant portion missing. My loving wife had drawn a black line at the top of the remainder and wrote "WI_Red drank this much in one night." Yeah, left that bottle alone for a while after that.

This is what will happen.

Trump will lose the election, cry foul and claim he's only lost because of fraud. He'll refuse to accept the result and call on the various far-right armed militia of which there are many - e.g. 'The Proud Boys' - to take to the streets.

The majority of the police and 'law enforcement' - who are essentially heavily armed paramilitaries - will side with Trump. At the very least they will turn a blind eye to whatever the armed militia do.

In the end it will hinge on what the military decide to do to restore order. They swear an allegiance to the Constitution (and not whoever happens to be the sitting President). If they stick with this then Trump will be gone. If they don't, then America becomes a banana republic, neo-fascist state and American democracy crumbles away.

I'm not sure how much is left to crumble when the sitting president already says he'll only accept the election if he wins. It just doesn't feel like the beginning of a process.

I apologize, it wasn't my intention to come off aggressively. I understand what you mean.

the moderators should take control... out them in separate rooms - cut the mike after the 2 minute statements and only have one mike live at once during the debate - not sure they will do that but it would be the best solution

Really surprised that there are people who genuinely think Trump did better, or even 'won'. The fact that the alt right social media influencers had feck all to cheer about other than make joe rogan trend because they think he could've done a better job says it all.

Trump could take a literal shit on stage and smear it on the podium and there would be people who cheered him for it. It’s called a cult of personality for a reason.

That's still a surprise to you? I thought the last years (and decade) have clearly shown that Trump's show of self-confidence is a smokescreen hiding his insecurity. I mean, he always responds to every little thing anyone says about him. Biden should totally bring up his little hands!

That's the thing, anything happening in these debates is the result of negotiations between the Biden and Trump teams. If the Trump team doesn't want a mute button, it's not going to happen. The moderator also can't do much except for asking Trump to STFU - so the next debate is probably going to go exactly like yesterday's.

That was astonishingly bad and I thought that although Biden had at least a modicum of dignity it wasn't a particularly impressive showing from him. We all know that Trump is the lowest of the low so there's no surprise there but Jesus it's still as ugly as hell. Although i'm not American i'm annoyed that the Democrats couldn't have found someone better and more dynamic as their choice.

I'd be vary wary of reading too much into the reaction polls. I remember reading the reactions of the Trump/Hillary debates with 'Hillary destroys Trump' expressed in liberal echo chambers and we all know how that turned out.

Humanity is fecked! This is the level we're at now!

Aye, but in that case the Biden team should just say "forget the last debates then". They could save face by alluding to Trump's refusal to abide by the agreed rules in the first debate as well as not wanting to legitimize a racist and dangerous president.

Sad but true. Another thing that worries me is how people in general are starting to get used to his antics, to the point of normalizing it. That seems to be one of the main reasons how anyone neutral could ever think he walked out of that with any sort of credbility.

Only thing I don't get is the amount of times Trump told Biden he wont do anything why couldn't Biden just say:

"I came from a working class background and am running for president of United states. You came from a multi generational rich family and had several business go bankrupt"

Amuses me they had lecterns this time, all I can rememember from the 2016 ones wa Trump stalking Clinton around the room.

True, but it would be easy for Trump to turn that into Biden being a coward who is backing out because Trump is a much better debater who clearly won yesterday, being a coward, and Biden being too old/senile for the debate. I think that's worse risk for Biden than having another shitshow like this - which many do seem to have recognized as a shitshow, which is to Biden's advantage.
