He's basically using the fact that voting is linked to a person via a piece of paper to call vote rigging. Hopefully American democracy will stop it now, but there is something to be learned from the process and not allow it to happen again. Technology can stop this happening. It's not like the conservatives over here aren't manoeuvring themselves to build up to this in the future.

It sounds like they've (senior aides) been trying to hold him back from doing exactly this for the past couple of days, and they finally lost the battle.
Those that has stood willingly beside him or actively supported him surely are. Or at least they are not going to actively go against him given that they are to varying degrees tied to his sinking boat and if they try to jump ship early he will drag them down with them.
