My top 5 so far is:

Under the Skin - Sexy, atmospheric, mysterious. Brilliant in almost every department.

Ida - Such an elegant and exquisitely restrained piece, dealing with very sad themes really well. It really felt like an actual 60's Polish film at times. That ending music, everytime.

The Dance of Reality - It had a lot of Jododrowsky's typical madness but he held it back more than he's done in the past and I think it might actually be his best and most accomplished film. Amazing performance by his son as the father.

The Wind Rises - It's such a wonderfully directed film, it just flows on like a gust of wind in the air.

Tom at the Farm - A bit uneven at times but very good tension.

My (far more mainstream) top 5 of the year so far:

The Guest
Gone Girl
Guardians of the Galaxy
X-Men Days of Future Past
Boyhood

feck, I forgot the Raid 2... that's definitely in there, instead of.... something.

1) Under The Skin
2) Guardians of the Galaxy
3) The Raid 2
4) Frank
5) Enemy

Looking forward to a number of others so I expect that list will change.

1. Dawn of the planet of the apes
2. X-men: Days of future past
3. Guardians of the galaxy
4. How to train your dragon 2
5. Captain America: Winter soldier

Still have to watch Gone girl. I'm guessing the Hobbit and Interstellar will make the list after watching them.

That's how you get 6 films into a top 5! Just have two number 3's!

How To Train Your Dragon 2 was very good mind - a definite honourable mention for me.

I think I'm gonna watch Calvary tomorrow.
should go & see roy andersson’s new film instead so you can report back.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Honourable Mention:
A Most Wanted Man
Grand Budapest Hotel

The only film I've really enjoyed watching this year is The Wind Rises and that was a 2013 film really.

Saw Fury last night, liked it a lot. Otherwise I dont think I've seen that many movies this year, but I liked The Wolf of Wall Street so that's up there as well.

Top Tier
-----------------------------

Locke
Grand Budapest Hotel
Guardians Of The Galaxy
The Wolf Of Wall Street
-----------------------------

Interstellar (Will be a good movie)
Have you seen it? You can't say anything will be good for certain.

Lucy was incredibly shit.

I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy the most I think. Very low expectations, and it was a great movie.

12 years a slave was released in 2014 over here, I'm guessing it wasn't 2014 in the UK (and elsewhere) as no one is mentioning it?

No, it came out this year in the UK. I'm guessing people are using the American release dates (as I did) so they don't include most of the Oscar films, which are usually released in January over here.

I find it really difficult to remember what films came out what year as I watch a LOT of films (yes I'm a film loving nerd) but off the top of my head, the top 5 for me, in no particular order, are:

1. Guardians of the Galaxy
2. The Guest
3. X-Men: Days Of Future Past
4. Captain America: Winter Soldier
5. Locke

Wasn't even in my top 5 for the Oscar nominations. I felt like Jack Donaghy, when he judges people the first time he meets them, watching that film. A highly overrated movie imo. Up there with There Will Be Blood in that regard for movies in recent years.

Seen so few movies as you can see by my list.

1. The Lego Movie
2. Chef
3. Edge of Tomorrow
4. Bad Neighbors
5. Maleficent

Couldn't disagree more.

I've never been in the mood for watching 12 Years, I tried once and heard the Zimmer score and then shut it off.
I think you could guess the story and be about 90% correct. The movie is exactly like you think it will be except what Brad Pitt does is build a house frame and give advice.

Fassbender is by far the best thing about the movie. His performance is excellent. Ejiofor basically has the same expression of surprise and tiredness throughout the whole movie and Lupita got the Oscar for being beaten basically. She barely says anything.

Saw Camp X-Ray at Abu Dhabi film festival last night with the director present.

Really impressed by Kristen Stewart and the film overall.

Nah both Nyong'o and Ejiofor were great in their depictions and had a lot more nuances of grey to their performances than you're making out.

Agree Fassbender was the best thing about the movie though, he's excellent. A lot of the supporting cast is very good as well, and it's a beautifully crafted film.

Not too many great movies this year for me and with Interstellar and Fury getting mixed reviews, it looks like a rather weak line-up for awards season. Looking forward to IDA, Birdman, Inherent Vice and Foxcatcher.

A few great blockbusters: CA: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy and Edge of Tomorrow. Boyhood as film of the year. 22 Jump Street was a hoot, LEGO Movie was super charming. I liked The Normal Heart a lot.

Top 5 (from the films I remember)

1. Guardians of the Galaxy
2. Gone Girl
3. Nightcrawler
4. The Guest
5. Locke

I also enjoyed X-men, Captain America and Bad Neighbours but overall, it's been one of the worst year for films in a long, long time.

Yay:
12 Years a Slave (technically a 2014 release in the UK)
Her (also a 2014 release in the UK)
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler

Honourable mention:
The Edge of Tomorrow
22 Jump Street
Gone Girl
Godzilla

Meh:
The Purge: Anarchy
The Inbetweeners 2
Fury
Bad Neighbors

Updated for end of year

1. Boyhood - insane ambition, wonderfully empathetic, very real. Great film.
2. Only Lovers Left Alive - cool as feck, brilliant from Hiddleston and Swinton, the only Jarmusch film I've really liked.
3. Ida - you won't see a better shot film, and it's a taut, lean story with great performances.
4. Whiplash - incredible tension, from a first time director, super impressive.
5. We Are The Best - touching film about young girls who form a punk band. Good companion piece to Boyhood.
6. Force Majeure - incredibly uncomfortable film, raises interesting issues regarding gender roles.
7. Locke - just Tom Hardy in a car with a Welsh accent but brilliantly realized. No mean feat.
8. Calvary - another good turn from one of the McDonagh brothers, Brendan Gleeson terrific as usual.
9. The Babadook - the best horror film I've seen in a long while, and a decent Australian film for once!
10. Guardians of the Galaxy - best blockbuster of the year, fantastic soundtrack, refreshingly offbeat sense of humor, Chris Pratt to be a star.
