2012 Olympic & Paralympic posters Revealed

For me it says everything about our institutional inability to get big national projects right. From the Millenium Dome to Wembley to this. We just always get it wrong. It's either overambitious and parody worthy (the Dome, this) or uninspiring and insipid (Royal functions, Wembley)...The hand over ceremony was perhaps the worst. A bunch of modern interpretive dancers doing urban ballet in bowler hats and umbrellas with a lazy allusion to the out of date swinging sixties cliche, followed by Beckham coming out of a double decker bus. It's London by way of postcard pretentiousness (which itself is a pretty pretentious sentence.)

They should of at least gone with a smorgasbord of ideas catering to all artistic tastes. Instead they went with an entirely modern "Brit Art" feel, which was always destined to be an embarrassment. One or two could have stood out as a bold inclusion, having them all be so 'interpretive', just makes them incredibly dull and disconnecting.

It also doesn't help that they're shit.

All utterly predictable and dated, isn't it? Ironically, ^that^, the 'artworks', and the airheads responsible for the whole thing, really sum modern Britain up.

Indeed. The people who thought this was a bold 'modern' poster campaign need only look at the Munich 72 ones. Difference is, some of them were quite nice to look at.

Germany. Better at being modern than us 40 years ago.

Even the 1936 Berlin Olympics posters, created under the aegis of a philistine like Hitler, were better. That says it all.

I like the top one, Mockers(Munich). As for Ofili's, it's paying homage to ancient Greek paintings of atheletes, but again, it looks a bit half arsed.

I quite like all the Munich ones. And there are some very abstract efforts.

It's interesting, an Olympic motif, and has the hallmarks of genuine talent. Many may not like it, but at least it looks professional for a start.

It's not about saying ours are "modern and abstract so they're shit", it's just that they're shit. That's why they're shit.

Most of the 2012 ones borrow from the ideas/work of other artists. Quelle surprise...

The last one in the thing on the BBC site looks like a "Get Well Soon" card and Tracey Emin's looks like a birthday card for your mother. Sarah Morris' effort isn't bad and I like Rachel Whiteread's one but the rest are just dogshit and don't symbolise anything at all, well apart from the first one which is just dogshit.
