18 year old detained in Dubai for sexual relations with 17 year old fellow Londoner he met while on family holiday in the Emirates

I usually don’t feel sorry for the people caught up in these stories because they ignore the modern day slavery etc. for a few instagram pictures on quad bikes, but this guy is quite young.

There was a story recently where a guy got arrested for a negative online review.

Fair enough if it was a lass from that country but when it's another Brit where your laws are 16 I think it's a tad different in terms of dynamics despite the laws within that country.
Not saying I agree with the punishment, but merely stating reality.

Because of stories like this one, for starters. That and other assorted human rights abuses and the vulgar ostentatiousness of the place. I reckon the heat is grim too.

Heat is only bad during the summer, rest of the year it's quite enjoyable. Dubai has gone very liberal over the years and the difference from the mid-noughties is remarkable, even if stories like this can pop up from time to time. I can understand why it can be seen as vulgar to some. Personally I like Dubai (although prefer Abu Dhabi of the two mains in UAE) even if they have some way to go stil by Western standards (but hope they never go full Western on everything). Although I have to say, I feel way safer there than in any big city in the West, but at the same time I can understand that not everyone feels the same (ie depending on your nationality).

I do feel Middle Eastern nations is sometimes underdeservedly put under way more scrutiny compared to Western countries, where there are major issues too.

I feel like they like to make examples of British people in particular. I don’t know if any of you were following this story but there was a football coach there who was caught with CBD oil - iirc it wasn’t even his a friend came to Dubai to visit him and left it in his car or something. I think he’s doing something like 10 years and his family have been trying to free him since like 2021

Unless he’s done something proper stupid in relation to texts/pictures, it seems fairly fecking mental that the mom of the girl reports this to the police in Dubai.

But they nicely hide the dirty poor workers from all the fancy tourist places! And it's super safe, because they just hide criminals in a dungeon forever.

I know a lad who lives out there and is mates of mates with that guy who got caught with the CBD oil. He says he isn’t anywhere near as innocent as he and the British press would have us believe. He was selling the stuff out the back of his car apparently.

Plot twist! :o

Sentenced to one year…
Pardon my ignorance, but shouldn't the girl also be charged? Premarital sex is forbidden per se, isn't it? Isn't that why even rape victims have already been charged? Or am I confusing something here?

That's always the way with any of those cases that sound like that, "oh someone I don't know just left it there".

I think foreigners are now exempt from the pre marital sex law

Poor guy is probably gonna be in therapy for much longer. I hope the mum is happy.
The guys black I wouldn't be surprised if the mom is just a racist cnut who didn't like her daughter being with someone of a different skin colour

What's the appeal of holidaying in Dubai anyway for regular folk? If you're rich I get it they can cater to your every whim..but if you're just a regular 9 to 5 Joe on a median salary person why Dubai?

Seems to be a place for the Instagram influencer types.

Personally, i don't see the appeal, been there once and found it to be a really mundane, hyper materialistic/capitalistic place.

It's the hollow nature of the place that makes me think its just for pretentious people looking to look like they have more money than they have go there as regular schmoes, there is no history or culture just newness that is crass and classless, I would never go to any of the gulf states even if they paid me to holds no interest of mine at all

It’s what I’ve heard from those who’ve lived there before too. We already have a better version of overly materialistic capitalistic place and that’s called Vegas. And at least in Vegas, you’re welcome to explore all the fetishes.

Same in Dubai if you've got the money. There's rumours that female influencers get all expenses paid trips there to be shat on.

I visited once as I had a friend that was living out there for a bit. I thought it was pretty soulless and characterless, full of aspirational expats and TOWIE wannabes.

There are so many hotels there that it's much cheaper than most places to stay in an extremely nice resort.

It’s absolutely shite, one of the shittest places I’ve ever visited. One main road, one crap monorail, shite beach, nowhere to walk. Truly a wank place for a holiday unless you like sitting at your hotel for a week and doing feck all else.

Was there for two days, thought it could be a nice stopover, it wasn’t.

The mother was very calculated and waited until her and her daughter got back to the UK, while the boy and his family were still in the UAE, before contacting the police there from the UK

I'm not arguing against that, but there are lots of people that like being in a really nice resort for a week, going to eat in average chains they're familiar with, and doing a bit of shopping. That's where a lot of the popularity comes from, I would guess.

What a lovely lady.

That's because it's Little Britain in parts.

yeah it's a factor for sure, the hierarchy seems to be something like;

sheikhs
government employees
western foreigners
local men
local women
brown foreigners

There was a Jamaican guy who worked at my hotel doing all the water sports and stuff.. he was getting paid 50% of what a British guy doing the exact same job was doing.

All the billions invested in promoting tourism to this hollow place and they do this  you can have your overpaid holidays in a plastic city AND go to prison for bullshit. Sign me up

I'll never understand what compells people to vacation in awful countries (and yes I'd personally consider the entire Arabian peninsula as such amongst other countries) and then be surprised when they get hit with draconic sentences when they violate one of the many laws that don't exist at home. If you really, really want to vacation in that sort of place, then at least look up what you're allowed to say, do, wear, bring with you, whatever. There's news like this every year from all sorts of countries, and it's always the same story about some idiot fecking around (this time literally) and finding out.

I'm absolutely not working the "we must respect their culture" angle here, I'm saying don't vacation in these countries, let their hotels rot empty, and if you really have to go there, tread lightly, know what's allowed, and when in doubt refrain from risking it. Yes even if it's the currently "hype" location. Maybe I'm just old and boring but "I went to prison for the 'gram" does not sound like a winning move to me.
