An 18-year-old Briton faces up to 20 years in a Dubai prison for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while the pair were on holiday in the emirate, a human rights campaigner has said.
Marcus Fakana, of Tottenham, north London, was on holiday with his family when he began a secretive holiday romance in September with another Londoner, who has since turned 18, according to Radha Stirling, of campaign group Detained in Dubai.
After returning home and seeing pictures and chats, the girl's mother reported the relationship to Dubai police, who then arrested Mr Fakana at his hotel, Ms Stirling said.
The United Arab Emirates' (UAE) London embassy has been asked for comment

Feel sorry for the lad…especially because she was only a few months younger and is 18 now. Apparently he/his family have reached out to Tottenham MP David Lammy.

I mean, by our standards its completly stupid, and that mother is going to destroy the girls life one way or another I would guess, years of therapy waiting there.

But if you go to dubai, follow the rules. They do not feck around. If you don't like the rules, don't go.

It’s very harsh and ridiculous by our western standards, but I don’t really see what we (the UK) can do about it. What’s David Lammy really going to be able to do? He went to another country and broke their laws.

"he broke their laws"

Technically yes but he most likely was not aware of the age of consent nor what he was doing something wrong.

Wasnt there some guy that posted a negative review of some dog grooming business in dubai and he was arrested.

Rarely is ignorance a valid excuse, less so in a stricter society.

Fair enough if it was a lass from that country but when it's another Brit where your laws are 16 I think it's a tad different in terms of dynamics despite the laws within that country.

And that's why going on vacation to these shite countries is whack.

Scheveningen has a nice beach. Yer missus can even sunbathe with her boobs out.

he’s going to call it a barbaric and draconian country, before being reminded that he needs to work with them, and rowing back his words.

Here’s hoping this gets loads of publicity and seriously damages Dubai’s reputation as a holiday destination. Horrible fecking place. Will never understand why anyone goes there.
there’s 17 year old girls to have sex with.

Aye, was listening to something about this last week. He was working there, was sick, got signed off by a doctor and they reported him for absconding. He went home, left a negative review online. When he returned to Dubai to visit friends, he was arrested. Because the business owner reported him for it, seemingly it's quite common and business owners do it to get negative reviews removed, it can be classed as slander. But they also do it to get financial compensation from the person who posted it.

The person on the interview said basically any kind of negative online comments about the country or anyone, insulting communication or private messages that go against their cyber laws can be reported to police and regardless of where you were when you posted it. You can be arrested there on arrival if your on a list.

This case was mentioned on the interview.

That is crazy. Like proper police state stuff.

tourism accounts for 10% of their GDP and this story is a disastrous bit of PR, so maybe there's a bit of hope if someone has a word they'll go easy on him, let him out in a month or something

Yet the UAE market themselves as a fun holiday destination to the west.
