100 Best Video Games of All Time

GTA IV at #4? Half-Life 1/2 not in the first 5? Minecraft in the top 100?

feck me this is terrible.

GTA4 isn't the best GTA and yet it's at #4 of the best games ever? OK.

Also, no Goldeneye is mental, and I agree with the seeming consensus about Ocarina of Time, that game was truly epic.

These things are largely pointless though, nobody will every agree on such a list.

Not a terrible list, apart from the turn based rpgs (which I just don't understand) most of the games are good.

I still play the original Tetris today (Redcafe champ too). It would be right near the top of my list. I would recommend it to everyone and would not have much respect for anyone who laughed at the suggestion.

Goldeneye should probably be there though - still as playable as any other game.

I agree, but there's a difference between saying Cruyff is the best player of all time and saying, say, Alan Shearer is. If that makes sense.

I am a little worried by the list.

But then I guess I wouldn't necessarily recommend Zelda OoT to people. I dunno. I know a few people that I know would hate it.

Portal is fairly deserving of the spot to be honest. Quality game.

Incidentally, anyone ever love Streets of Rage (I know, dumb question) but here is a remake that has taken 8 years to make... read the story - it's amazing.

So a song that is an easy listen and liked by the pubic without involving a great deal of complexity and skill (grenade by bruno mars) is better than one that involves those aspects to a huge degree (stairway to heaven)?

I don't think that really works as a comparison. Music and Games are completely different mediums.

Tetris does involve skill. The faster the game gets, the faster you need to think and you need to be quick and accurate with the controls. If you're playing against 1 -3 other players, you also have the opportunity to play tactically and use power ups etc.

These lists are subjective and always divide opinion. Tetris may or may not deserve to be on the list. I just thought I'd point out that it's a very good game.

Are you saying that Tetris doesn't involve a great deal of complexity and skill relative to other games?

I loved Portal, but once its finished I saw no reason to ever play it again. The only thing that kept me coming back was that lovely ending song.

No way in hell is it anywhere near my favourite of all time

Tetris isn't my favourite game but I think it is the perfect game, its the epitome of what a game should be. Its literally going to be around forever, as long as there are video games there will be a vesion of Tetris out there.

It's safe to say I won't even look at that list. Greatest game is too subjective, and no doubt the wrong Zelda and Final Fantasy games will be higher up.

Plus no doubt there's the usual smattering of 'cool to like' old school games, just to stop them getting thousands of angry mails.

It's bloody boring. Like Snake. I guess had this been games and not video games Snake should also have been there.

Anyway it is subjective.

So true.

You should read it, for nostalgia, if nothing else.

I'm pretty sure I physically own copies of a rather large part of whatever games are on that list. It's not going to stop me seeing the same old stuff.

Lists like these are tough anyway, there's always going to be loads people disagreeing with virtually every position. What I don't like is they always follow the same trend, it's always largely the same games. You could look at that as "well that's because they are the best ones", but I tend to look at it as it's because they are too lazy to actually do homework and want to appease - be it fans of the site, sponsors or someone else.

 I do love me a JRPG sadly.

72 out of 100, and i've played all but 3 of the top 30 (Starcraft 2, Civilization IV and Deus Ex).

Chrono Trigger is a good little game, overhyped but still very good. Portal at number 1 is a shocker, it's a great game but it was only 4 hours long and for the most part just simple puzzle solving. No room for Persona 3 or 4 in the top 100 is very odd, but then again they leave out FF7 and Ocarina of Time so they're obviously above conventional wisdom.

EDIT: In fairness i did only play some of them for about 15 mintues.

Mixed feelings about the list.

Modern warfare and Halo 3 shouldn't be anywhere near the top 100. Likewise Deus Ex and Shenmue should be much higher up the list.

Though I'm glad the likes of Planetside, Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonatus were given a mention.

I've played 31 of those.

Rubbish list, just for the fact that Yoshi's Island is about 73 places too low, and it's made me want to buy Earthbound.

ok makes sense now. it was made on april fools.

My top 10. Would be.

10. Super Mario World - SNES
9. Streets of Rage - Sega Megadrive
8. Sonic the Hedgehog - Sega Megadrive
7. Fifa Road to World Cup 98 - PC
6. Final Fantasy XII - PS2
5. Final Fantasy VII - PS1
4. Uncharted 2 - PS3
3. Kingdom Hearts II - PS3
2. Pokemon Red - Gameboy
1. Zelda - Link To The Past - SNES

FF12 was a very poor FF. Not sure it even ranks in the top 10 Final Fantasy games.

I couldn't believe how much worse than X it was when it came out. It was devastating. :(

Since we're doing top 10s

10. MGS2
9. Planetside
8. Beyond good & Evil
7. System Shock 2
6. KOTOR
5. Mass Effect
4. Morrowind
3. Shenmue II
2. Deus Ex
1. Shenmue

Kingdom of Hearts is in yet Ocarina of Time isn't, if you say so. Essentially what the list says was all N64 and PS1 games are at a massive disadvantage because of their graphics - I still think the N64 is my favourite console.

Am I the only person who doesn't rate Super Mario Galaxy? I didn't like it much at all, Super Mario 64 should have been far higher up the list as I'd argue it is the most influential game of all time for setting the standards in open-world 3D gaming. It also ridiculous for a game first released in 1996 that it has a camera better than so many more modern games.

I also thought that Sonic and Knuckles was the best of the genre and should have been in and around the top 10.

Seeing as I for some reason never quite "got" RPGs and seeing as FPSs rarely tickle my fancy, there were quite a few entries that I disagreed with, plus I made the mistake of being impatient and getting a Sega Megadrive rather than waiting for SNES to come out. Add to that that I didn't play much outside football games for a good six years (till the last year) then my experiences are a bit amputated, but was glad to see games like MGS (the PS version), Deus Ex and Red Dead being recognised.

Also a tad confused as I found Assassins Creed: Brotherhood to be better than AC II.

O wellz.

And regardless of the classical and universal properties of Tetris, it's no-where near as engrossing as modern day games.

Twas my first ever Final Fantasy game so I didn't have much to compare it with at the time. I've only played XII and VII.

Will try VIII and X when I get the chance. I hear those 2 are the pinnacles of the series.

YFW - you saw Morrowind wasn't listed.

VIII and X are great but you can't beat VII really. Although it was the first one I played so maybe that has influenced me!

You're in for a treat. :)

They're both fecking amazing. Prefer X, but there's not much in it.
