8th May 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement. Simon Stone wrote a good piece on it yesterday. Well worth a read. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65494103

The following day United announced the appointment of David Moyes on a six year contract. What were your thoughts on Moyes at the time of the appointment?

I was worried by the dour football Everton had played throughout his tenure but thought he had done a good job there and might be able to make the step up. And it sort of appealed to my sense of fairness that a manager can still get a job at one of the biggest clubs after doing well at a lesser club that never had a chance of breaking the glass ceiling.

In short, don't trust me when I'm talking about managers.

I think I was apprehensive but hopeful he'd grow into the role, and I trusted Fergie's judgement implicitly :wenger:

I will forever remember the first reply to the thread when the rumours about Ferguson retiring surfaced:

The post-sacking (slight) revisionism on how Moyes could've been given more time etc. or that his performance was somewhat justified by our subsequent poor form is nonsense. The club has been a mess throughout for a decade straight, but his 9 months at the club set us back a huge way.

Knew it would be a total disaster and that’s exactly what it was. Set the club back years. The sheer incompetence of Woodward and Moyes was astounding, and most football fans knew it as well.

I was not convinced. Looked so underwhelming. But apparently, SAF had handpicked him, so I thought let's support the manager. But few months down the line, it was obvious that the job was too much for him and players had downed the tools in protest.

It's funny looking back but a lot of us were excited for the new era at this point. There was some skepticism on whether Moyes was the ideal replacement but after a week or so most seemed on board and were expecting the trophies to keep coming.

It was also around this time a young Zaha had a blinder in the playoffs to get Palace promotion into the PL. Moyes and Zaha were SAF's last gifts to us and we were buzzing.

The Moyes x Zaha combo did become legendary but for a totally different reason.

I remember thinking he'd probably be manager for 51 games, winning 27, drawing 9 and losing 15. Then being replaced by Giggs as caretaker before Louis van Gaal took the reins. Other than that I wasn't really sure what to expect.

81 crosses. Nuff said.

Fellaini, Baines and Ilararrararalamendi, then Rio learning how to defend from Phil Jagielka.

What a time to be miserable.

I remember repeatedly asking "Why?"

I still don't have an answer. It was weird, got weirder, ended, remained weird

I still have absolutely no idea why they thought it would work

It was ridiculous that mourinho and guardiola both joined new clubs that season and we got David Moyes, replacing fergie was something you'd imagine either of them would have jumped at.

I'll never forget how unbearable the top reds were that season, after every home defeat, after every moyes "we'll try and make it difficult for them," after the 80 crosses game against Fulham, they were tripping over themselves to post

"Your job now is to stand by our new manager"

Smug cnuts

If you having goal problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but a cross ain't one.

The fact United wouldn't even buy out the remaining month on Moyes' contract at Everton so he could start before July 1st was a clear sign of things to come.

This is so true and understated. The guy since day one looked so out of depth, even more than Ole. He never looked like a United manager. We have been playing catch up ever since then.

Mourinho was never a realistic option. SAF and Sir Bobby would never have allowed him to be the successor.

Pep and Ancelotti seemed to be the realistic options other than Moyes but I believe Pep had already verbally agreed to be Bayern manager well before Fergie announced his retirement and Ancelotti claimed in his book that Fergie spoke to him but he was close to accepting the Madrid job and rejected.

Vetoed the Thiago deal but did have a Kroos deal practically set up, only for that deal to be vetoed by the next manager.

Think I got a temporary ban that day for having a meltdown on here. Worse decision ever.

A day that shall forever live in infamy.

United flags raised half staff.

Speaking of flags, do you remember when things were so bad under moyes that security were sent at the end of the game to defend "the chosen one" banner

Was gutted and was convinced it would be Pep. I've grown to hate Pep so never mind, 10 years of pain has been worth it.

If only we had gotten klopp or guardiola, how things would have been different!

David fecking Moyes...Christ Fergie what was ye thinking??

Same same.

Feck me, though. The last 10 years have been a lot rougher than even my worst nightmares when Fergie retired.

I do remember, before the season started, the suggestion of us not qualifying for the Champions League was laughed off as ridiculous hyperbole by many, as if it could just never happen.

It was odd how confident a lot were that he would be a success, and the handover from the greatest manager in the history of the Premier League to a manager who has never won a trophy would be seamless. I definitely wasn't so confident of that.

Wow, 10 years. I didn’t mind Moyes as he’d done a good job at Everton, had similar characteristics to Fergie, and I thought he could be capable of making the step up. The warning signs started to materialise before the season even started though; transfer dealings were a mess, massive changes in backroom staff, and I seem to recall him having an extended holiday before even arriving at the club. And that was all before the Fellaini debacle.
