02/03 - Road to the PL Title

Rio took some time to find his feet, sure, but we were pretty solid in the second half of the season. We usually concede far more these days... though that's no surprise, of course.

Yeah, it was outstanding, only 06/07 comes close. That 6-2 at Newcastle remains one of my favourite games and the 5-3 at Old Trafford was also brilliant. I remember playing Leverkusen in the Champions League and being desperate to destroy them in revenge for the semi-final the previous season. Then there was Van Nistelrooy's insane goal at Basel, struggling against a flu-stricken Juventus at Old Trafford but crushing them away with a Giggs masterclass...

The "title decider" at Arsenal was one of the best games between two heavyweights I've seen, and I always think of that game when Arsenal fans do their whole "woe us, we are always fecked over at Old Trafford" -- they scored two offside goals, one of them spectacularly obvious. And Van Nistelrooy scored possibly the best goal of his United career. The other contender is also from this season, against Fulham. The memories, man.
That 2-2 with arsenal, didn’t a goal come off Cashley’s heel in a clearly offside position? From an Henry shot. Or the other way around. Sol Campbell tried to kill Solskjaer in that game.

Yes, and that was their second goal. Henry scored the first and he was offside by about half the fecking pitch.

The red card shown to Campbell was a circle. I remember laughing at that.

Don’t think anyone really looks back at that team in those terms, it was a bit of a smash and grab title win we stole from a better Arsenal team. Was a lot of fun doing it though, and really pissed Arsenal off so bad.
No, I meant in general, not that team specifically.

Henry’s face when the ref and lineo were discussing the foul was hilarious

It was the star of a bit of a downturn to be honest, several of our main player would start to decline a bit (looking at Keane) and we had to replace them which to be fair to Fergie he did in style.

End of his second successful side if we differentiate this team with the one before which in my eyes ended when Cantona left and the one that came after and won a European and league double.

The gap between us and the rest was never as big as city's is now to be honest especially after the emergence of arsenal as we always seemed to have WC rival to fight off be it arsenal or later down the road Chelsea (who while failed to win it probably had the best consistent record in Europe for a time so definitely good even by continental standards)

Some of our 90s wins and especially our 2000 win were emphatic though, our 2000 team being one of our best.

Phil Neville's MOTM at OT against Arsenal, bossing Patrick Vieira :D

6-1 up against Newcastle and Fergie asking for one more goal.

Henry's was the 2nd. I don't think Cole was offside but could be wrong, jammy either way. Henry was a mile off, dreadful decision.

My first full season as a United supporter and definitely my favourite. Ahead of 06/07’s come back title win and 07/08s double. It was magical as it was all so new to me but also there the hype surrounding Arsenal (and them winning it at OT the previous year), made us underdogs in a way. And then there’s the 2-2 at Highbury which remains my favourite match of football till date. Pure magic, pure emotion, beautiful showcase of the PL at its best.

Ruud was unbelievable that year. Best number 9 I’ve seen at the club bar none.

That was one absolutely shocking decision. Such incredible resolve by the team on the night. We played some lovely football that night.

They were better than us though. They played sexier football but we had a stronger core that turned up the heat is tough moments. The 2-2 summed up the whole season. Arsenal played with a different sort of swagger but needed a referring decision to get a point at home because we had a certain level of control and precision to our football that they lacked.

.
  1. Memories of us as this all conquering team that dominated teams is a bit exaggerated.
I don’t think anyone sees 02/03 United as that. It was more the dominant team in English football that had been finally caught up to delivering another master class in how to be the best team over a 38 game season. Much of the narrative at that time we’re over us having been dethroned because it was in a way a cycle ending for us with Arsenal in their prime but not serial champions. That showed at the end of the year and it was bloody brilliant.

I had stopped following United after ‘99 as my interests switched to PlayStation, music and my guitar.

I caught the 4-1 at home to Charlton in the penultimate game of that season, fell in love with van Nistelrooy, and caught the bug again. Have pretty much followed the club every step of the way since then.

03-13 was a magical era. The relative lows of 03-06 followed by the incredible highs of the following 3 years. We were really spoilt. Hasn’t quite been the same the last 10 years, and not only due to the lack of success. The absence of any clear identity in modern day Man Utd is very frustrating. Everyone knew what we were about 10 and 20 years ago.

I remember this season so much, I had the end of season DVD which had all of Evans goals and highlights of every game. I damn near wore out that DVD in between going to the park and trying to perfect my RVN penalty technique.

Anyway, this video was pushed to my and I thought it was good to watch back each game.

Couple of things I noticed;
  1. Barthez is appalling. Like, just utterly crap.
  2. We conceded a lot.
  3. Random losses to smaller teams.
  4. Defending is all over the shop.
  5. Veron was great, I like him.
  6. I love Ole, just so clinical.
  7. Forlan started looking good.
  8. Scholes would be worth 120m in this market.
  9. Memories of us as this all conquering team that dominated teams is a bit exaggerated.
  10. Honestly, Barthez is a clown.
What are your observations watching this? Does it make you miss the yesteryears?

One of my favorite ever seasons, funny you mention the Ruud bit - I was obsessed with that too! We were flawed but fun, great times.

I do wonder if current City fans can get those roller coasters given how bloody sterile the football generally is. Prolly just bitter.

One of my fave seasons loads of memories. We weren't great defensivley but going forward with RVN we scored for fun.

That fact we were quite flawed made everything more exciting nothing was straight forward and you never knew what was coming next.

One memory that always sticks out is an early kick off away game at villa, at the time anyone could buy villa tickets of Ticketmaster so there was basically two away sections. Wasn't a great game a 1-0 win Thanks to a Beckham goal but on the train back north that was obviously full of reds it was announced that Tugay had put Blackburn 2-0 up against Arsenal and the train nearly came of the tracks!

The Real Madrid home game remains one of the most incredible games of football I have ever seen the atmosphere was electric all night and honestly to this day I still think we should of knocked them out. So many chances.

Things I remember from this season:
1) I don't think the all conquering memories are that inaccurate, I just don't think we were very good for large chunks of this season. First half, or certainly third of it we were definitely not title winning material.
2) Ole became a weirdly extremely good right winger. So much so that it contributed to Beckham's downfall.
3) Phil Neville randomly putting in a prime Roy Keane on speed performance against Arsenal
4) Veron was great in the CL but rarely looked like he fancied it in any domestic game.
5) Scholes should have won player of the year and is still even now underated. I think it was between Ruud and Henry for poty which is a fair shout, but Scholes was just ridiculous good. He basically didnt misplace a pass or make a wrong decision all season, despite playing as a no10.
6) For all the controversy with Beckham he didn't look anything like the same player after his injury the end of the previous season.
7) I loved Ruud and Forlan probably more than I have any player since
8) We could genuinely have scored about 15 goals in that Real game yet everyone was shocked when they went out in the next round.
9) This wasn't the greatest Ferguson team but mentally possibly the toughest.
10) Also says something that I remember this as one of our less convincing teams, yet Veron and Beckham weren't good enough to hold down a starting place and Diego Forlan was a fringe player.

Ruud dragged us to that title. What a player he was.

That season was probably Scholes at his peak as well.

My favourite version of Scholes was when he played further up the pitch like he did in his early seasons and this 2002/2003 season.

I think some people forget what an intelligent link-man, number 10 and a quality finisher he was. Could score all types of goals.

My first season following United and still one of my favourites.

Was probably one of our best trophy celebrations. The fans at Goodison were amazing. "We want our trophy back". Some great chants at the end, especially for Becks on his final day. But I'd say half the singing that evening was "Johnny goes marching down the wing, O Shea, O Shea." He was such a cult hero back then.
