İlkay Gündoğan 2024 - departing Barcelona?

They have no Europe next season you don’t think that benefits them? They still have a talented team. The last time they had no Europe was the last time they won the league with 95 points. Not hard to say they’d be favourites.

I’m not afraid to say United, but I’d still say Chelsea are favourites without Europe distractions.
They have gotten worse with every new signing and every new manager. They're selling their more sure players in the hope that their new arrivals will come good. The club is quite unsettled. You can make a case for Liverpool but Chelsea stand no chance.

Going to city used to be for the money.. but now sadly i think even if they pay less players would still go there for money and pure enjoyment playing in a well functional team

Politics aside.
Even United in our pomp struggled with the location of Manchester with a lot of players from western Europe and Latin America. If you look at salary reports (even ignoring the fact the PL believes they have lied about some player/manager wages) it's hard to argue money is not a factor even now, United had to overpay a lot for this reason as well - lots of players have spoken about this openly, families and partners often complain/want London and so the only thing you can really do is line the agent's pockets and throw money at the player.

Barca, I'm sure would prefer to sell even though they signed him on a free, but yeah, seems a little more suited to a direct brand of football. Could do as a "Rabiot" alternative to add squad depth and competition to midfield, assuming we move on both Fred and McT.
Rabiot alternative exactly. One of those two alongside Caicedo, a striker and a keeper and we'd be laughing.

Does feel a little ambitious mind you.

Ambitious is exactly what we should be and if we're able to sell well (yeah, i know!), no reason we shouldn't be able to deliver on those, so i guess we'll see.

Had his contract expired? Why is it a free transfer?

Weren’t the Barcelona cult members on here saying that Messi can’t sign for Barcelona because La Liga didn’t allow them to register players?

Good luck to him. A main stay of FF teams gone

Blimey, really? You must have a high sanity threshold if you put him, or any citeh midfielder, in your FF teams. It's like trying to play pin the tail on the donkey after you've had eight pints

Tends to be how free transfers work!
I mean he is a wonderful player. Not young any longer, but would still have moved for a good fee.
I thought City are letting him move / cancelling his contract to make it easy for him and their sister club Barcelona.

Got a lot of points for me the season just ended but yeah take your point. It’s why I rarely choose Foden etc

Reportedly has asked to leave, probability to Saudi.

That should help them with their registration woes.

Looks like back to city after being frozen out of barca. In a perfect world we would have 2 cms or one wonder CM and Gundogan and Bruno in front of them. Two wide forwards that score and drift in and ooo wee

It sounds like they're freezing him out to get his wages off the board so they can register their other new players. Barcelona are such a weird and odious club.

Would be tempted to go for him given that he's not only still a good player but would be a great influence in the dressing room for someone like Mainoo. But I'm sure he's on huge wages and it might bite us back to give a 34 year old heavy wages on a new contract.

We should've tried to get him before he signed his last contract with City. I remember there were rumblings of him leaving because he wasn't getting game time and he had one year left. He would've fit in so well with Pogba and Matic at that time, would've given Pogba more freedom to to forward.

Not sure how true but apparently Barca offered City a swap deal for Rodri with Gundogan going the other way. Romero is pretty reliable and he's the one who reported it.

Idk what type of drugs those fellas at Barca are on but that's just too funny.

City will bring him back so unfortunately he won't be an option.

Christ I thought it was bad when they offered us Andre Gomes for Pogba!

Pretty sure the majority of our fan base, turned up their noses at him at the time. 'Far too injury prone' 'sick note' were some of the comments that I can remember. Just like whats happening with Mazraoui now. Gundogan went on to become a key player in a successful City side.
Hope Mazraoui can have a similar run here. He's worth the gamble

I would take him in a heartbeat for Bayern.

If there is even a remote chance, We should be in for him.

Free transfer on 2 years contracts would be great.

You'd think players would stop joining them on a free, when they keep selling them a year later.

Bayern buy Gundogan and sell Kimmich to United?
You don’t have the money. Otherwise: why not? Bayern’s best XI probably doesn’t include Kimmich.

Kane
Sané Musiala Olise
Pavlovic Palhinha
Davies Kim Upa Stanisic
Neuer

Would be a smart move for city they shouldn’t be throwing huge money about with the court case coming up. They could be playing in the conference next season.

Not having Kimmich as CM or RB is pure madness, Pavlovic, nor Stanisic, is better than him in either position. It looks like Kimmich will be the starting CM under Kompany though.

I expect Kompany to rotate Kimmich, Pavlovic and Palhinha for the two midfield positions but Palhinha to start against top teams. Kimmich and Pavlovic are very different midfielders. There are also about 20m reasons to sell Kimmich (which will not happen this summer).

But back to Gündogan: he would be great on a 2 year contract as an option for any dominant possession oriented team.

Yea let's not get off topic.

Gundogan is on above 300k, wouldn't signing a 30+ year old to that salary be against what Bayern have been trying to do this summer?

It’s not my money.

I also don’t see him going to Bayern, but them being interested in Olmo and Doué make me believe that a 4141 is on Kompany’s mind. And Gündogan (Olmo/Doué) and Musiala in front of Palhinha and flanked by Sané and Olise is a sexy thought. No room in that setup for Kimmich or Goretzka.

Crazy. Free transfer. Barca are such a mess. Now rumors of trying to sign Leao. They really need a hard re-set, assuming all the financial hardship rumors are real.
