Fans chanted “you don’t know what you’re doing” when he got taken off, which should say how well liked he is. Was good today, honestly was probably their best player before he got taken off. Had a knock so it makes sense but we were baffled by the sub initially.

Malacia is good, but offensively lacks a bit so far. Alvaro could play plenty of games next season where we expect to be on the front foot. He can create from the LB position.
That is a good train to have of course, and he does look quality on the ball, but I would ask -- can he defend in the LB position? Does he have the quickness to stop crosses coming in when 1 v 1 with a right winger?

Oh really? Just the Sky award for Fernandez then.
Yeah, we were a bit puzzled by it, Lindsay seems to just be given it by default at the moment. I thought Alvaro and Woodman were both better.

He’s coming along very nicely.

YPOTY last season now more than holding his own in the Championship. Working out literally as well as it could.

My only concern is where he fits at United.

Has made Championship team of the week.

In my personal opinion he might not have future with us, unless his stamina gets better and gets faster for a full back. He may well transition in to a holding midfielder like Matic/Blind(before he became the CD. Think this would be same problem for many of the talented academy lads. But I do think they will all get quicker. For some reason our players are not built like tank(except for Mainoo) like other teams does. We play very young players couple of levels above could the a reason for that.

He's a lovely player to watch. A bit of an Alexander-Arnold conundrum though potentially as he's technically very good and creative, but isn't the best defensively. He lacks a bit of pace and struggles 1v1. Hopefully he can improve in this area because going forward he is a joy. Perhaps he can follow the Ethan Laird path and supplement his development by making a loan move next season that involves him playing as a left back, rather than at wing back. Forcing him to work on his defensive game would do wonders for him.

Yeah, or maybe let him be the player he is and focus on that and let Casemiro, for example, cover for him. A bit like Liverpool does with TAA.

It's all about risk/reward, pleasure/pain. If we evolve into a dominant side (and that is the aim), then Fernandez will be bringing a lot more positives than negatives. He's one of my favourite players to watch from the academy.

I'm quite up for not telling a defender "don't worry, you don't have to defend" myself.

Yeah, I can see Erik doing something similar. He's really good as an inverted left-back too, so there are possibilities (one is he learns to defend!).

Could he end up being like Gareth Bale done think? Starting out as a left back but evolving into an attacker. Every time I have watched him he's always very high up and wanting the ball. Looks a real prospect.

Sounds like this loan is going really well so far. We were due one, I suppose

Pace will be an big issue. We may see him move him in centre of the midfield. His technique is certainly good enough to be a midfielder. He always looks so assured on the ball.

Hopefully we give him a proper chance wherever it might be. There are just some players that look special and he is in my opinion one of those

Laird is also doing well at QPR.
Just got injured, didn’t he? I think that’s the only issue with Laird. He’s almost certainly got the talent to be a PL level player (even if it’s not here), he just doesn’t seem to be able to stay fit for a full season

Yeah last night but him getting injured a lot is a myth, his loans at Swansea and MK Dons he was injured free more or less. He's played 10 times already for QPR, after only joining just over a month ago.

They love him:

Boy's a bit special.

Reminds me of when Bale was at Southampton about 15 years ago.
Man of the match even when up against top players in Aarons and then Hernandez.
Hopefully there's no recall option for January.

Dean Smith would be looking at him today and thinking he could fit well into the Norwich 11.
Quality and has the fire in his belly also. Great player
Man Utd's best left back.
fecking great having him here. It's like when you cheat on footy manager or FIFA having looked online at the hidden gems. Takes the piss.
I gave him an 11 today….this boy is going to be a superstar and we are so lucky to have him in his apprenticeship.

Plenty of good/great fullbacks were not that fast, and it is quite possible to improve your speed quite considerably.
  • Neville
  • Lahm
  • Alaba
  • Abidal
  • Azpi
  • Zabaleta
  • TAA
  • Ivanovic
  • Alonso
  • Many more

He doesn't seems like he's quick enough or that he suit for a positional based team. Not to mention that now he plays as a LWB in a 3ATB formation.

I don’t think I’ve seen one match of his where he doesn’t ooze class and create at least one major chance for his teammates!

People mention his speed a lot but he’s actually not that slow! I think positionally he got caught out a lot at left back but that is something the coaches can work on!

I think he's a bit slow to turn round. Once he actually gets going I think he's quite quick but, like a lot of modern defenders, he doesn't seem as agile as full backs of yore. That kind of sharpness is surely something that can be worked on though and if your positioning is good it also becomes less important.
