Álvaro Carreras | Benfica

So we are definitely getting a LB? Shaw can’t last the season and feck knows what’s going on with Malacia

Who the feck even cares. Just another poor ETH transfer from the Eredivisie. Even right-footed Dalot has made more of an impression at LB than Malacia has in the last two years.

He's not good enough to be relied upon as a back-up, especially for this position where the back-up is likely to play a lot due to the injuries to Shaw. I wish we'd kept Alvaro and the money we spent on Malacia instead.

The Malacia was fine. Cheap and still quite young but already with some experience. He had some good games and some games where he didnt look that good. Alvaro certainly hasnt shown that he is a better player than Malacia yet.

I do think we need a good back up for Shaw though. Malacia has been out for a year so who knows what his level as a player is now. Or how being out for a year will impact his fitness in the future. Too much of a risk to count on Malacia for next year but i wouldnt want Alvaro to be the back up option either.

Daft to let this level of talent leave so cheap - he should have come back in January

hopefully the sell on clause will deliver in a couple years

I just don't see it with him sorry,it's good we have a sell on clause etc but watching him play doesn't make me think he'd be a top prospect in a high end premiership team.

Not everyone is good enough to make it here, no shame in that. At least we got a fee, hopefully there's no money to come.

Never seen him constantly and whilst we sell cheap, not many that we wanted to keep, have gone on to pull up trees.

Happy to see that he’s become Benfica’s starting LB and the the same for Spain U21s.

Isn't he Alvaro Carreras and not Alvaro Fernandez? Anyway apparently he's benfica's starting LB now. I think we have a buy back clause and looking at that LB spot where we Shaw and Malacia who seem to be injured forever I think it will be interesting to see how Alvaro develops, maybe we can bring him back next summer.

If he would have an interest in returning to United in the future, and the reported buy-back clause is real, he could be a good option for us at left-back, if Shaw continues to be regularly injured, and Malacia's rehabilitation doesn't go well and he cannot return to his pre-injury level.

Looked quality last night against top opposition, question marks defensively but we don't even have a fit LB, real shame we sold him as he looks so technical on the ball for a wingback.

What a game yesterday... MOTM imo

So confident going forward with pace and technique. Tbh this has not been his standard level but if he can evolve to display this sort of performance constantly, we have a gem

We had two weetabix men at left back and we sold him for pence. At the time some suggested Harry Amass was coming through but that doesn't look like it is happening. So I guess we just run Dalot and Mazroui into the ground till one gets injured and Jonny Evans starts at left back

Because despite everyone knowing you shouldn't place any importance on pre-season games, people decided to place importance on pre-season games. The noises from the club have been consistent with regards to Amass, i.e. that he's regarded as having massive potential and a proper path to the first team, but that it won't be immediate, and that his development would be better served by staying where he is right now. We might see more of him in the second half of the season in cup games and dead rubber ties (though this is very, very dependent on how our season pans out).

Decision to get rid looking more and more ridiculous... unless someone tells me we have a low buyback clause and he'd jump at the opportunity to come back ?!

Buy back clause and matching rights according to the tap in merchant.

The decision making is simply bizzare. We should have just played him, considering we have not had a LB for two seasons now. Instead we wasted all that money to get the Spurs reject LB for half season loan.

It’s crazy because he was highly touted for ages and virtually gave him away

Strange

If we trigger the buy back, wouldn't the player have to agree to the move? i.e., he could choose to decline.

Fernandez was fun to watch in the under 21's.

Glad to see him doing well at Benfica.

Harry Amass has the potential to be a better player though IMO..

Of course he can decline. It just means we have a fixed fee for him that we can trigger in the first couple of years. But he can obviously decline or enter into contract negotiations with us.

I think Fernandez did much better than Amass on the same age. He contributed a lot of assists and goals as well, so it’s still early to tell Amass will be better long term.

He was far from a consistent level. Even in Benfica it took him a full season of barely playing to start getting some game time this season.

That’s fair but with our predicament of having our 2 LB’s out for over a full season and playing the likes of Amrabat at LB it was a bizarre decision to sell him for peanuts

Totally agree. I think anyone that regularly watched the U21’s would tell you what a great talent he was. Really strange decision to move him on when LB was a position we were really struggling with. Even stranger given the reputation ETH supposedly has for blooding and developing young players!

They abolished the alternative a couple of hundred years ago.

Shouldn't have been sold and quite a few of us were saying that at the time. Now that better teams actually want him and we have a relatively low buy-back we probably can't afford it

Selling a lad for €6m in June, only to panic because we have zero options in his position and want to sign him back for £17m in January is the most Man United thing I can think of.

Yup. And the two players out injured that have us thinking about buying him back as cover were - you guessed it - both out injured when we sold him in June.

If we get him for 17 then it's worth it. We probably could have developed him here, but he's come on quick at Benfica and it means we can get a quality left back for net 11 million. That's a bargain if he's doing as well as suggested. We feckin' need a left back as well.
