But I think what makes the true difference between 1990 and 2014 is the technical quality in the defence. 1990 doesn't come close to the passing quality of prime Hummels/Boateng. You have to go back to Beckenbauer's days...

It was the same dark age of German football before it was revived by Klinsmann/Löw bringing a new energy and concept to the dugout and by the reformed youth system delivering the first prospects...

Don't get me wrong, that's no disrespect to the 1990 team, it's just that they weren't just as good ballers.
