It will work on occasion against weaker teams at home but against teams like this who totally bypass midfield with a single pass its crazy. I used to pull my hair out seeing us line up with that formation against teams like this. I can see he gets the ball but he has to take out Martial's legs to reach it. Looks a foul to me but again we lack protection from the refs, we seem to be more than fair game and rack up so many injuries.
I don't think he has been particularly poor either. On top form he's capable of saving the goal, so we have high expectations I guess.
