Southampton Football Club (nicknamed The Saints) are a professional football club based in Southampton, Hampshire. Southampton were founded in 1885 by members of St Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association. St. Mary's Y.M.A., as they were usually referred to in the local press, played most of their early games on The Common where games were frequently interrupted by pedestrians insistent on exercising their right to roam. More important matches, such as cup games, were played either at the County Cricket Ground in Northlands Road or the Antelope Cricket Ground in St Mary's Road. The club was originally known as St. Mary's Young Men's Association F.C. (usually abbreviated to "St. Mary's Y.M.A.") and then became simply St. Mary's F.C. in 1887-88, before adopting the name Southampton St. Mary's when the club joined the Southern League in 1894.

Southampton play their home games at St. Mary's Stadium, and were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992. The club has a long-standing sporting rivalry with Portsmouth in a match termed the South Coast Derby or the Hampshire Derby. Southampton has received praise for employing an intense brand of football under Mauricio Pochettino, and having one of the best youth systems on English soil — which has churned out the likes of Alan Shearer, Gareth Bale, Matth Le Tissier, Theo Walcott, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, James Ward-Prowse, Calum Chambers, Adam Lallana over the years — as well as current Manchester United leftback, Luke Shaw.

Fantastic start but we go again!

    Next lineup should be:

De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, McTominay; Sancho, Fernandes, Pogba; Greenwood.

Cavani off the bench if we need him to save us again.

    Let's get 6/6.

    6-0 let's go!

    de Gea

    AWB Varane Maguire Shaw

    Fred McTominay

    Sancho Bruno Pogba

    Greenwood

Ole won’t immediately remove Victor from his team, and James will probably start again too, much to everyone’s annoyance, due to Sancho being ‘not quite ready yet’.

De Gea, Shaw, Maguire, Varane, AWB, Fred, McTominay, Pogba, Bruno, Sancho, Greenwood.

You just know Ole will pick Lindelof and James though to give the new guys time to settle or some shite.

    1-3

Forgive me for being out of the loop, but what's up with Rashford and Cavani? Carrying injuries?

Rash has had shoulder surgery and will be out for months. Cavani got an extended break after the Copa, should be back in training in the next few weeks.

Can see Sancho starting and Varane on the bench. Sancho will have had 2 weeks worth training under his legs, that’s usually enough to get into the thick of things.

If both Sancho and Varane can get start, it'll be the most excited I've been about a lineup in years.

Yeah I agree with this. I’m a fan of James’s work and non stop movement but he’s the only one who deserves to lose his place there from today. Keep the standards high as feck and sub on your Cavanis and Martials and let them scrap it out to get back in. Hopefully this is the end of complacent walking around performances in general. The competition is too stiff to not leave it all out on the pitch now.

Still think we need one more controlling midfielder though.

It will be a different game to Leeds who gave us loads of space. Its not happening but I would love to go with

    ----------------------de Gea
    AWB-----Varane-----Maguire---Shaw
    ------------------DVB----Matic
    Sancho--------Bruno--------------Pogba
    ---------------Greenwood

Try and low block that Southampton!

Its just gonna be Jadon from the start and the rest will be the same.

Can't see Varane or Cavani in the lineup soon. Maybe vs wolves or Newcastle.

Terrible lineup. I'd go completely different.
    Greenwood

    Pogba Bruno Sancho

    Fred McTominay

Greenwood has never played in goal and he’s not going to start now.

For Varane? Of course he will. There is no slightest doubt about that - calibre of players is too different. That said, Varane himself has to be fit enough, and that’s another question - but as soon as he is fit, he starts.

I doubt Sancho will start but perhaps more time off bench than he got today. I reckon we might see Martial start, most likely in place of James and Greenwood moving right. Can't imagine Varane will be more than a bench player. Would be great to have Cavani involved too but no chance of starting.

Shaw could play as a right-side goalkeeper.

Think Varane will be on the bench and Sancho will start in place of James. No other change apart from Cavani on the bench

Ole is a glorified PE teacher without the tactical sophistication to employ hot new strategic innovations coming out of Europe such as the right-side goalkeeper.

Sancho in For James. Let Varane start on the Bench and settle into the team in time. More of what we saw v Leeds would be perfect

As a kid, and in the US in the 80s, an opposing team player two defenders on the line in the box AT ALL TIMES.

it wasn’t effective as I recall.

No way James starts. Ole was just nervous today. We are getting the full attack against Southampton.

Looking forward to seeing Sancho banging in his first goal wearing the slick new away kit. Pity its a whole week away. Feck it's great to have the prem back.

    Martial
    Sancho Bruno Greenwood
    Fred Pogba
    Shaw Maguire Lindelof Wan Bissaka

Think we'll see this. Can see a Sancho and Martial start here for James and McTominay and just going for it. Varane I think will take a while to get into the team, with the training and all that. Probably in the CL to start with after the international break.

Completely agree with the same team picked in the first few posts...

    De Gea

    AWB, Varane, Maguire, Shaw

    Fred, McTominay

    Sancho, Fernandes, Pogba

    Greenwood

The only possible change is if Varane isn't deemed quite ready and gets his first start the next game instead. But, if he's fit enough to start, I'd definitely go with that team.

How to fit others in the team when Cavani, Martial and Rashford are all fit enough to be competing for starts I'm not sure - but, until then, the above looks our strongest team.
