So many times already this season Mkhitaryan hasn't picked the right pass on the counter. Frustrating.

Good first half. Could be more clinical. Hopefully get a second to kill it. But they could easily nick one.

Not too bad but one of Mata or Mkhi needs to come off for Martial. Both are getting dispossessed way too often. Valencias form is also worringly bad

Not great football, for the first time this season really. But I guess a Matic-Fellaini midfield is never going to be incredibly easy on the eye. And tbh Southampton's sloppiness has been infectious, as is so often the case. Just a messy sort of half.

If I was Mourinho I'd be tempted to get Herrera on for Mata, who's been uncharacteristically all over the place, and push Miki to the right.

And as always it's a matter of when Martial comes on, not if.

Just watch him, the moment he miss place a pass or make anything looking like mistake, he starts running as hard as possible to do some defensive work but the way how he is doing it, you can see a cloud above his head with text " Run Mata you feck, run, he will sub you otherwise"
LMAO accurate depiction that. I can imagine Mata totally thinking that.

We look good on the counter until the final ball, the midfield is too ponderous though, Herrera in there would make a difference.

Everyone else is winning at the minute, Chelsea 2-0, City 1-0. Tottenham won earlier, Liverpool play later.

We need a second goal, I'm not happy with our midfield, Southampton have the numbers and we look vulnerable there. That being said in the break we are a threat.

Awful performance. If Southampton had taken their chances Utd would be 1-0 up.

Can see why Southampton have struggled to score this season, they don't have a great deal of penetration and if we can get a second I'd be confident they wouldn't have enough to come back, as it is they could still get something from this.

Too many times this season miki is picking out the wrong pass in the final 3rd or getting disposessed.

Midfield needs addressing. They're gliding through it far too easily. Flanks need to start stretching the play and pulling defenders away from the middle. Mata drifting too much and Valencia is more harmless than a newborn baby.

Without Pogba, we are reduced to a functional team. He gives us that X factor. Mata and especially Mikhi have been poor. Rashford too. We do look comfortable after the goal though. Bring Martial and Herrera on for Mata and Rashford.

And Lukaku is an absolute beast.

I still don't understand how such an average wanna be thug like Lemina has played for Juventus :wenger: A lower league team of any top european team is his true place.

    What chances?

Thought midfield looked OK. Maybe we could make it a three to gain some more control but Matic-Fellaini have been quite good. Replacing Fellaini would remove the protection we have from aerial balls and would make things even worse.

Think we should get Mata off and bring on Herrera and shift Mkhi to the right. Martial needs to come on after the 65th or 70th minute.

Strange match. Think the fear factor is back.

    Would explain Southampton's performance.

He's not but we're winning. Im happy enough.

I'm happy enough that we are winning. I'm not completely happy with the overall team though as I don't think we are playing what I think is our best team. Not as simple as just 'winning'. Before the game, you don't just pick a team that can win, you pick the team that gives you the strongest chance of winning. For me, that team has both Rashford and Martial in it. No doubt in my mind that when putting together our best attack, Martial is not a substitute.

For me that half was 7.5/10. It's very indicative of where we are as a team. We're a very good side but not one that's going to win the league with a ten point gap (ie not a mega dominant team). That's no bad thing though, most sides who win the league aren't 10/10 performing teams.

Mata hasn't provided a proper attacking threat on the right. Young needs to push up more to force Rashford further up the pitch (we need a proper lb).

Considering those limitations it's a good performance.

Lacking quality in attack but solid enough at the back so far at least.

And Lukaku is an absolute beast.
Agree. Without Pogba, we are missing that extra bit of spark. But Fellaini has done well so far and has been useful in defending set pieces.

Who drops out though? Because Mata is playing a crucial role in how we're performing and having one of Martial and Rashford on the bench has been incredibly effective this season. That's what is best for the team.
