Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

We better smash these lot. They gotta go down and the thought of giving them points is horrifying.

Ah remember the days when we could confidently say we’d beat Newcastle by 4 or 5, you’d expect a win here but nothing guaranteed nowadays.
Hopefully our pressing looks good and we keep it up for most of the match (If it goes ahead)
    Happy Christmas all!

For the last few seasons we always get turned over by a prime relegation candidate. Sheffield United last season, Bournemouth before that, Cardiff before that.

    It'll be Newcastle this year.

Thank the good Lord we have a game!

    Looking forward to this one.

Me too but I reckon it gets pulled between now and then rendering this thread useless.

For me if it is played I'd love to see Cavani play and Rashford dropped.

Varane if he's fit too to play with Bailly.
I reckon these two could be a good fit for each other.

I think the game will go ahead, doesn't seem like Newcastle have any issues so far, and I think we are past the worst of it now (I hope)!

Varane has to start, not sure Maguire will be dropped, think he will start.

Just not sure who comes in at full backs, does RR stick with Dalot and Telles??

I hope so. However I'm sure the new manager will give Shaw and Wizzbang a chance.

I'd go for Dalot and Telles myself.

As long as three points is coming our way then I'll be ecstatic!!

    Merry Christmas pal.

Cannot understand how we've hardly played Cavani at all after he was our best player last season.

Bruno will never be dropped. No pressure on his spot in the team has made him too comfortable.

same for Maguire. Who can put in below par performances all season but still get picked every week. Just boring now it makes watching the games not enjoyable now as I'd love to see Donny start instead of Bruno or Bailly instead of Maguire for a few games, and so would many more fans. But they get chances after chances.

Same with Rashford. How many more chances do we give him!? If Cavani is fit he should start ahead of Rashford.

the favourites on Favourites FC (not just Bruno, Rashford and Maguire most of the team). And until that changes and the team is picked on merit and performances Manchester United will keep up these inconsistent performances handing teams a boost as they fancy playing against United. Ralf Rangnick doesn't seem like the disciplinarian that will make big changes many hoped. It's Ole's starting team (Which got him the sack leopards never change) and no big decisions on stamping his own authority on the team by dropping some big names. Which you would expect after that Norwich Disasterclass performance. Let's see but I bet it's the exact same starting 11 as against Norwich.

United struggled to beat Norwich who are worse than Newcastle and the worse team in the league.. so there's no reason if United concede the same chances they did to Norwich that Newcastle couldn't score them and beat United as they have scored 10 goals more than Norwich in the league so know how to score goals.

Night game on the Tele under the floodlights. Manchester United coming to town. Freezing cold temperatures for Manchester United's inconsistent primadonnas (knowing they'll never get dropped). The Galloway End will be rocking. Favourites FC (I.e Ole's starting team and the team that got him the sack is still bizarrely starting under Rangnick). This game has upset written all over it.

Regardless what happens against Newcastle, I'm more excited for the Burnley game at Old Trafford because it's only a few days later Rangnick will be forced to rotate the team which means we will see players like starting Donny hopefully. And if they impress they should stay in the team.

He has been injured a fair bit, plus we have another veteran who has been scoring well.

Looking forward to this after such a massive gap from the last game. Think we'll be similar to the Crystal Palace game and the pressing will return, hopefully for even longer this time.

I don't care if shaw plays and scores with his big arse as long as we win

Bit harsh. Ralf hasn’t even started to pick the team yet. That team beat Arsenal so of course he’s gonna stick with them. Then they beat Palace, playing pretty well, so yeah, he picked them again against Norwich. It’s a shame the Brentford game didn’t happen cause that would have been a totally different team. Let’s see who he picks for Newcastle but I have a sneaky suspicion you’re gonna be right. I’m also looking forward to the changed Burnley team. But that doesn’t mean Ralf is a soft touch. Once he has a chance to properly see everyone together I’m sure he’ll start to change things up. Right now though everyone is on a clean slate in my eyes.

    It’ll be postponed
I think so as well - I fully expect Newcastle will find enough positive cases to get it called off, it’s in their interest to push as many games as possible past the start of the January transfer window so their owner’s money can save them.

    DDG
    Dalot Varane Maguire Telles
    VdB Fred
    Mason Bruno Sancho
    Ronaldo

Three changes for me. Varane is world class and simply one of the best defenders of this generation, so has to play. If Donny can’t get the game against the team at the foot of the table, then I don’t know when he will play. He’s not replacing Scholes or Carrick either, rather Scotland’s bang average centre back who plays there because McGinn, Gilmour and even McGregor and Christie from the SPL are better options than him in his natural position. Mason has looked very good in his cameos, and has definitely outperformed Marcus this season. The rest of the team picks itself.

    Newcastle 0-2 United. Ronaldo x1, Mason x1.

Rangnick might think the Burnley game will be more difficult. If he does expect a lot of changes for this Newcastle away

i would say Newcastle away is more difficult than Burnley at home but it depends how Rangnick plays it.

Is it being televised? If so I think there’s a fair chance it will stay simply due to it being the only game that day.

Burnley at home is likely going to be low block siege game, and we suck at breaking organized defences down.

I'll be fully expecting it to get kicked off from now right up until kick off.

I'll actually get quite a shock come 07:59 if it actualls does go ahead as I frantically try find the remote to put it on

If it weren’t on Sky maybe but I don’t see this getting cancelled as it’s the only game on that day. Sky won’t want it off, United won’t want it off and nor will Premier League. Newcastle have only three injuries as well so they should have the squad. Fingers crossed.

Feels like ages since the last game.
I hope we play well and win without fuss
