Rubbish! Tactics are holding theses players back!
I'd be happy for us to be playing against Mata, Lingard, Fellaini and Memphis every week regardless of what tactics they were using. Blinkered to suggest they are capable of 'storming' the league.

We were scoring goals for fun at the back end of last season, with the system we played. If Van Gaal wasn't so stubborn, he'd go back to that, because something clearly isn't working, and although we might not have the best attack in the world, we've got good enough players to be scoring against the likes of West Ham, Palace, etc.

We were decent during that difficult run of matches. That was down to Fellaini and Young linking up so well on our left side. However, that was never going to be long term. Nor would it be acceptable to have two such average players in the first eleven. Don't forget we sort of limped past the finish line in the end after that tough run of games.

I just think playing inverted wingers and not having any semblance of crossing is hurting our attack. We are very predictable and teams are just daring us to break them down, knowing we cant.

Maybe with another one or two transfer windows we can bring in the top quality striker we so desperately need. However, I'd rather trust Pep Guardiola with the money/team moving forwards. It seems like LVG solves one problem only to create another. Its been almost 1.5 years at the helm now. We are in the same place we were last year. We've improved our defence but now our attack is gone.

Yea and if he was with us,he would do the same, copy paste, its that simple...
Not sure what you're trying to say here I was answering and agreeing with a comment from another poster who mentioned Chich positively - have no idea what you mean by "copy and paste" unless you're saying that the leagues are not the same or something. I personally agree with you and don't think he'd do the same for us because LvG would not give him any regular game time, wouldn't make him feel wanted and would probably use him as a fecking wing-back or something.

but you don't call for change....
For sure we need to change when it is necessary. But we are not even halfway past the second season.

We are still challenging for top 4 and in the CL aren't we? That may change in a couple of weeks of course but I'd prefer to wait till the end of the season.

That was hard to watch, painful at times. Not very optimistic about Wolfsburg, probably a draw and ending up in the Europa League.

    POSITIVES:

Honestly thought we played 'better' today and it was because Rooney wasn't on the pitch blunting our every attack.

Martial didn't get the touches into positions we should be having him in but he looked sharp at times and his close ball ability is amazing to watch.

The rest the players have had during the week looked like it helped. Less lethargic but same of the poor on/off the ball movement.

I'm convinced the more we play without Rooney the better.

AFAIC our goalscoring problem is due to lack of movement, not who is playing or where they are playing. Rooney I admit has been poor but today should explode the myth that 'he' was holding us back.

LVG believes in letting the ball come to the player rather than the player attacking the ball. We can clearly see players, especially our midfielders, doing this and it's ridiculous because you've literally stopped to receive the pass instead of keeping our momentum up the pitch. Memphis, Lingard, and Martial, who have the roles of 'creative' players, are allowed to take passes while on the move but by the time the ball goes to them, all of the defenders have gotten into position. Which is why we are trying to pass through 10 men and we're so reliant on crossing, which West Ham can defend against all day long.

It will not matter which strikers we have on the roster to play. Martial, Rooney, Fellaini, Wilson, RVP, Hernandez, they will ALL experience lack of service if we keep playing such a slow game.

Outside of that, McNair and Blind were awful today and I was not impressed with Varela at all, who I thought was ready to be exposed big time on the right. I am thoroughly fed up with Mata and want him sold. Fellaini had a decent first half but did very little in the 2nd.

As for Tuesday, I hope we win but if we go out I really don't care because we're nowhere near ready for the bigger European clubs yet. The PL is RIGHT THERE to be taken and we can't score a fecking goal.

PL is right there because the likes of West Ham, Stoke, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Southampton are beating/holding big teams for draw. Maybe its not because other teams choose not to win but because these teams are not easy to win anymore?

I have to say that I would normally agree with you 100%. But normally I don't call United boring and predictable - which to me is just alien to the way the club should be run. But I'd love to get to the end of the season and for people to show my posts and be able to say: look how wrong you were! I'd luv that, just luv it

So I guess West Ham will be praised for their superb effort today? In my view, West Ham did absolutely nothing special and nearly beat us with the greatest of ease. We were saved by the post and De Gea from being 2 or 3 down in the first half. All West Ham did, like all other teams do against us, is play narrow and crowd the middle because they know that we most likely won't score. A big reason for that is the tactics we're employing keep finding us in these situations where we're camped in the final third and tossing it back and forth with no solid ball coming in. The way around that is to counterattack and we must be the worst team in the league on counters.

The point of my post is that if we played with more attacking instinct, several of these games could've been wins instead of draws. Yes, we may have lost games as well, but we have better players than these opponents and would probably offset the 0 point games with 3 point gams instead of just getting 1 all the time.

Feck me you must be easily pleased if McNair is brilliant for you. No matter the position. The guy is not ready yet.
Anyway our main problem is still the offense. Can't believe just hoe incredibly hard we find it to create changes or score a goal
Oh sure, he's not a finished product at all. I'm considering his age and lack of experience. He's miles ahead of most CBs his age.

Just got back from the office to this shit result:rolleyes: Another year of fighting for top four at this rate. LVG really needs to sort this shit out because we can't go on like this... :(

    What a bad result!

But I missed all the second half guys, could anyone sum it up for me please.

WHU had a brilliant chance to score, but screwed up.

85% of 2nd half played within 10 yds of WHU goal. Fellani, Lingard and Martial had chances to score, but didn't.

More urgency, but still a lot of poor decisions. Varela did better than McNair

Thanks for reply mate. Yes we need more urgency in attack!

And my point is that if teams with better attack than us seem to lose games against such teams, it's not just the tactics but the fact that these teams come to win. Yesterday we tried to score and probably should have scored but those useless guys can't even poke the ball into the net from 3 yards out

West Ham were the same in most games. Winston Reid was the motm in the city Arsenal games iirc.

I thought we did alright, we had some pace going forward even at the start of the match you could see us moving forward with purpose even though attacks broke down in the final third. We had some good chances and should've scored but the same could be said about West Ham. Overall I think the performance has improved and if we had scored even one goal people would be happy but that was not the case.

    Excellent analysis by criticalanalysis.

Not to beat a dead horse, but we looked vastly better without Rooney today. True, no goals to show for it but we pushed West Ham back further than we've pushed other clubs in recent weeks.

I was ok with the Fellaini start due to the circumstances but in retrospect I wish we had started Memphis left, Mata in the middle and Lingard right. Memphis looked like he had the West Ham right back's number, while Fellaini lost any relevance after the 15th minute.
