It's right space at the right time. That's what they teach at Ajax from the academy. If he moves into the space and if he doesn't get the pass at the right time, he is going to look as if he is either hiding or his movements are bad.
You don't pass to the player as then he will have to stop his movement. You pass into the space for the player to arrive at the right time.
Personally I think it was the wrong move for DVB.

He's unavailable for players who can't pass or aren't used to pass like that. Watch his Ajax highlights. He's in the same positions as he is today, but players like Ziyech or De Jong were finding him really easy.

So it's a complete and total mismatch for him here. He has to change everything he knows about football to fit in here. Not sure why he was signed if the tactics weren't gonna change.

Fred is finding space and progressing the play exactly as he should be, but it's VdB's job to drop, pick it up, and distribute from there. He's literally playing Bruno's role, he's just failing.

Yeah, the Fred bashing is a bit puzzling to me, too. He's been bringing the ball forward and making some decent passes - certainly no worse than anyone else.

Poor guy, can probably set up a decent PL side but in over his head at United and had a disastrous spell at Sociedad.
