I don't think it's necessarily pace (you can pass the ball quick and they can still keep a shape), it's more about running forward WITH the ball and playing passes through the lines.... something to break their shape.
Commit a man.... dribble past a player.... anything that stops them from sitting in a 4-6-0 formation.
