What's the story with Gomes, is he being saved for the Arsenal game or did his leg fall off in a bizarre potato peeling accident?
Check my post, both him and Dalot have knocks and are expected to be back for the Alkmaar game

Williams has been brilliant in the u23’s and last year in the 18’s, he has real fire in his belly and if he takes the aggression and intensity into the first team the fans will love him. Shame Rojo plays instead of him tonight, he is dire.

I got 9 of starting 11 right. I expected starts for Williams and Garner instead Pereira and Wan bissaka and i don't see the sense of starting the latter player at all?

MEN were right about Gomes and Dalot not on the panel and i presume both are injured?

Maybe Greenwood gave Gomes and Dalot tonsillitis. Saying that, we must have some brilliant Drs as that was a very fast recovery unless he is still carrying and we have no choice to play him. Very happy for Tuanzabe, cannot wait to see him replace Lindelof one day soon.

Rojo is 1 injury to AWB or Young away from playing against Arsenal. He needs games. Williams could have started instead of AWB.. That is surprising. That sub might happen..who knows.

    Positives:
    Greenwood as a striker.

Pogba-Fred midfield will be goo much for Rochdale. Plus let's see how that works.

    Minutes for Chong and Tuanzabe.

Romero is world class so feck Rochdale

    PS......let's fecking ave it

I mean Williams is there and why does Andreas needs to play this game ahead of Garner when two other senior Mid are starting. And why is Gomes(considering he isn't injured or ill) not even on squad and Chong is starting after last game? He definitely prefers graft and energy ahead of technique and flair which we can see in his team selection and also the way we play on the pitch.

Rojo is a senior player who deserves to play and played fine against Astana. Andreas and Garner play entirely different positions, one is a right midfielder behind the center forward and the other is a central midfielder who will probably come on for Pogba at some point. Fred needs match fitness as does Pogba before he starts against Arsenal.

Gomes is another story that will likely come out during the match or post-match. No reason to come to a conclusion about Gomes without any real or tangible evidence. As for Chong, he's the reserve winger. Rashford out, Martial out. James needs a rest before Arsenal. No other options.

It's a completely rational starting XI and squad when considering injuries, players who need match fitness and the fact that United cannot afford to lose tonight. The team just isn't talented enough or stable enough to just roll out players and guarantee a win.

Tuanzebe being captain ahead of all those senior players on the pitch doesn't sit well with me. What is that even supposed to be/mean and do?

Agreed. Feels like a way to try to get some goodwill from fans, feels a bit forced.

Do we know that for sure? If he was fit, I don't buy that he wouldn't be in the squad just because the others have 'graft' and 'energy'. He's got more energy than Mata.
It's a knock, and he should be back for Alkmaar.

I seriously doubt he wouldn't have played otherwise. He came off the bench on Sunday and started against Astana. And after poor performances from his competition in the role, he would have definitely been given the chance to stake his claim tonight.

Apologies if already posted but I presume Gomes is injured/unwell as this is the sort of game you’d expect him to start in?

Also is Dalot injured again or just not in the team?

Hope I'm wrong but I think it's an awful team selection. I know there is positive buzz about Tuanzebe being captain, Pogba returning, Greenwood starting etc but the actual team is very bad.
Firstly the attack is awful, no change there. Doesn't matter whether it's Lingard right, Pereira no.10 or vice versa. Both variations are as crap as each other.
What makes it worse is that defensively it's very weak too because we are playing Pogba deep and with Fred. This is worse than Pogba playing deep with McTominay because McTominay is better defensively than Fred. Who's defending when we lose the ball. We always lose the ball, so who's defending when we lose the ball?

I'm pleased with that team. Axel as captain is really cool to see, well done there Ole. Show some serious faith in the boy.

    Greenwood's chance to shine, this.

Shame no Dalot or Gomes, was looking forward to both.

    2-0.

good to see Pogba back but no James is a pity. Hopefully fresh for Arsenal.

Questions need to be asked about our training methods, olé said we would be fitter this season and look how many injuries we have. As Neville would say, something isn’t right.

Lingard and Pereira will run for days and they do commit themselves when United don't have possession, that much can't be doubted about them. Their offensive output can, which has always been the point whenever they start or play in general. Fred hunts the ball down, but his positional indiscipline catches up to him and the team at times. The backline is fine for a team of Rochdale's level, it's whether or not they, as in Jones or Rojo, have a rush of blood moment which is more possible for them than others.

Pretty sure he was referring to cardio and stamina. If we are training intensely, then you need to expect injuries.

Tuanzebe being made captain feels like they're appeasing him because he won't start at Arsenal even though he deserves to.

Hope this means we see McTominay, Fred and Pogba vs Arsenal and not Matic.

Really don't want to see Lingard or Pereira near the lineup on Monday either. Should be James and Martial if fit either side of Greenwood.

Its insane how overrated Gomes is on the caf..

Glad it isn't just me that thinks that.
He looks to me like some guy's little brother who has been allowed to have a run around with the proper players.

After 3 days of the right antibiotics, you could easily be well enough to play a game, or at least most of it. Not extraordinary, that. When our doctors start performing Citeh style heroics I'll raise an eyebrow.

I had tonsillitis a couple of times, and I was wiped out for 3 weeks, and I wasn't trying to play football at professional level.
So a few days is a marvellous recovery time I'd say. If it was really tonsillitis it must have been an exceptionally mild case.

That will be swept under the carpet. Remember everyone foaming at the mouth about an Ole pre-season? We now don't hear a word about the state he's got us in though.
