  • Good enough starting XI given what we've got avaliable. But that bench again!? How stretched is this squad yet again?

We really need to get the job done inside 90 minutes, because there's no attacking threat on the bench whatsoever to bring on for ET or as penalty takers if it goes that long.
We are loaning out three attackers and brought nothing in. Think that answers it.

    Hojlund. Sigh.

Limited options really. Eriksen started on the weekend and probably does not have the legs to go again so soon and with Ugarte just back in training he is not risked from the start so no choice but to play Fernandes deeper and drop Zirkzee back into one of the 10 positions. Rasmus has actually been a little better in his last couple of appearances so lets hope something clicks tonight and his luck turns.

Some really inexperienced players there going up against some top pros. I hope the likes of Casemiro, Mazraoui, Dalot and De Ligt step up.

Bit concerned for Casemiro as he's played lots of games recently. Never understand how managers freeze out players for looking old and slow and then out of nowhere play them relentlessly... Just rotate them, it's nothing new...

But also understand that Ugarte probably wasn't fit enough to start and limited options. Eriksen probably on the bench because of just that too. Hopefully Hojlund can look like a footballer out there

He's had to really because Ugarte and Collyer have both been injured. In fairness, he looks more suited to the slower pace of European football. Plus, both Collyer and Ugarte are on the bench, just in case!

Nothing on the bench if we’re chasing a goal, or if we pick up an injury to one of the front players.

So Heaven was registered to play but Obi couldnt be. How does that make sense?
It was explained in the week:

United's hopes of a trophy this season and European football next season - vital for their financial issues - now rest on winning the Europa League.

Clubs were allowed to add three new players to the 'A' list of their 25-player European squad by the Uefa deadline on 6 February before the start of the knockout round.

United added January signings Patrick Dorgu and 18-year-old Ayden Heaven, specifically to boost Ruben Amorim's first-team squad.

But at that point Amorim was not considering Obi as a senior player and said the forward was someone who might get an opportunity later in the season.

In addition to increasing the 'A' list, clubs can add players to their 'B' list to play in Uefa competitions at any point up to 23:00 GMT the day before a game.

'B' list players are anyone who has been able to play for the club in question either for two continuous years from a player's 15th birthday or for two out of three years if the player has spent time at another club on loan.

Obi does not meet the criteria as he only
joined United from Arsenal in October.

Real Sociedad de Fútbol, S.A.D., more commonly referred to as Real Sociedad or La Real, is a Spanish professional sports club in the city of San Sebastián, Basque Country. Football was introduced to San Sebastián in the early 1900s by students and workers returning from Britain. In 1904, they formed the San Sebastian Recreation Club and in 1905 the club competed in the Copa del Rey. In May 1905, the San Sebastian Football Club was formed as a separate branch of the club. In 1909, it applied to enter the Copa del Rey but complications over registration permits saw them compete as Club Ciclista de San Sebastián. This team defeated Club Español de Madrid 3–1 in the final. Out of the confusion, the Sociedad de Futbol was formed on 7 September 1909. Subsequently, the club was a founder member of La Liga in 1929.

Traditionally the club followed a policy (similar to that of its rival Athletic) of signing only Basque players, before signing Republic of Ireland forward John Aldridge in 1989. While a strong Basque contingent has been retained among its players, nowadays both non-Basque Spaniards and foreign players are represented at the club. Its youth section subsequent to the all-Basque era has still been very successful in developing internationally renowned players, such as World Cup winners Xabi Alonso and Antoine Griezmann. Real Sociedad won the Liga title in 1980–81 and 1981–82, and last finished runner-up in 2002–03. The club has also won the Copa del Rey twice, in 1909 and 1987. It contests the Basque derby against rivals Athletic Bilbao, and plays its home games at the Anoeta Stadium.

Ugarte must still not be right to not start but least have the option of him to bring on. Heaven a bit of surprise picked before Lindelof though I'm not complaining on that one

A good day for Garnacho, I believe, is today.

He will prove to be the difference in the match.
His finishing as been poor recently. Needs to up his game here. He needs to start on the right and be a creator rather than left side and be greedy.

Lindelof is not sticking around and I think it was clear on the weekend that Heaven offers more than him right now. Sadly, with Dorgu suspended again for Sunday we will probably be back to playing Maz as a WB and Victor will be back in the side.

At the same time it’s the first good run of games from Casemiro in nearly two years so why not try keep the momentum going.

Maguire back on Sunday so that should keep Victor out.

Looking at the Sociedad team Zubimendi,Becker starting and that alone improve their starting 11 from last week.

I'm pretty optimistic for some reason. I think we'll win. We're usually good in big games and we're fecking Manchester United

Sitting in the stands here and at least the Sociedad supporters are pretty entertaining - they even brought their own mascot to play with Fred

Everyone around me is nervous as feck. Sigh

Good to see all the times that Rasmus doesn't get the easy service he should. Dude be miles open and still womt pass it, its happened so many times since he came. Practically had to score 15+ goals all by himself last season. Hope he shows up tonight. Its fecking vital for this game.

Interesting team. I didn't have Casemiro down as starting considering Collyer being back for a little bit now, and then also Ugarte too.

Heaven over Lindelof was unexpected too, but positive. He looked great at the weekend imo. Clearly Lindelof will be off at the end of the season too, so makes sense to give Heaven those minutes where possible now to help him develop.

I think Casimero going to be our savior this whole EL-run. His experience is second to none and the pace is a bit slower.

    He heads one in today!

(The pessimist in me sees him taking a red…)
