Minding his own business. You act like he's a ball boy on the sideline, he's on the pitch supposed to be paying attention and defending FFS.

So Lindelof is not allowed to attack that space because a player is standing there? If that was the case why do defenders ever bother jumping with players - just mark your zones, stand your ground and let defenders clatter in to you then.

    Ridiculous argument.

I think you will find that defenders jump to clear the ball, not to avoid getting clattered into. When the ball is not in contest, there is no reason to jump. And since the ball is not contestable in that area, no, Lindelof is not allowed to just recklessly jump into the nearest defender--who by your logic is expected to jump in order to protect himself from seen and unseen flying men. Really?

We are officially better than Leicester, who failed to reach the last 16 of the Europa League while we did. And Lindelof's kung fu was not a foul. And I am the walrus. Coo-coo-ca-choo.

I think that's what Atletico Madrid were trying against Chelsea. Playing for 0-0 is madness.
It would have been nice to see goals tonight, but we did what was needed in the first goal. There were changes to the teams and then changes again during the game. It just got a bit disjointed once our midfield went off.

    Totally agree.

"Minding his own business" during defending the corner. Seriously  ble

Getting tired of the constant Martial bashing on this Match day threads
Thought everyone played ok in a nothing match
Bring on Chelsea on Sunday and I hope we draw MIlan

So someone can stab me in the street and it would be my fault because i let my body get in the way of the knife. I should have done something to stop it. Hahahaha. Okay an extreme example. But this debate that the Spaniard is somehow at fault is laughable.

He wasn't at fault really. Nobody was.

I said earlier that if anyone was to blame it would be him as the collision happened because he didn't compete for the ball in the same space that Lindelof did.

But he didn't do anything that warranted a foul and neither did Lindelof.

Well that was a dire second half. The amount of backward passing almost put me to sleep. No chance really for Amad to do anything playing when we are that limited with play makers, it seemed everyone's first thought was to pass it backwards.

Chelsea next, I hope Ole doesnt put tiredness or them having longer off as an excuse if we were to lose. Bruno, Rashord and AWB could have had the whole night off, we were never losing that 4 nil lead.

Hoping for the easiest tie possible tomorrow.

This game just shows how this club especially the coaching staff has no football identity. They arent playing as a team.

Yes there were a lot of non-regulars, but they all practice together. Which probably means there is no emphasis on tactics, system or style of play during those practice sessions. It’s just a group of players with talent put together trying to find a way to win.

You take Man City, no matter who is playing, you still see a system, you see organization, everyone knows what to do.
    Good lord.

Leicester will be the only British side to have been knocked out of this round of Champions League and Europa League matches. Albeit there is Liverpool holding a 2-0 lead against Leipzig with the Anfield leg to come in a few weeks.

    It was society's fault!!!

I usually hate the player bashing but in this case it's probably warranted.

If a defender was walking about putting in as little effort as he does and we conceded 3 goals, we'd all be in here tearing into him.

No reason it shouldn't be the same when an attacker does it and fails to worry the score sheet.

I would put money on it Man City are trained in the same way only better players and more ball oriented

Plenty of time ? We get only 2 days rest.

Stranger things happened ? Keep him on the bench and if by some sort of miracle we're losing 3-0 we can put him in.

It's baffling decision. This is a dead rubber. Save him for the Chelsea game.
Came off at half time, wise decision, make sure they game is won first

Lindelof baffles me. There are signs of a quality defender in there but some of his decisions are questionable. His positioning is also suspect.

Until we sort that backline out and acquire a reliable DM, we aren’t going to win a trophy.

This is my worry tbh. With City they do it every match. With us we turn up some matches and then dont turn up for others.

So the Sociedad is at fault because he stayed where he was? The Spaniard was minding his own business and poor guy had his head thumped by Lindelof was clattering into him. Have a look at it again. I cannot believe this is even a debate. It wasn't just a free kick against Lindelof he was lucky not to get sent off for dangerous play.
So what should have Lindelof done is the part I don't get. Not jump? Not try to score? We know that this goal is never getting disallowed against us, because everyone will argue the defender was not going to be able to defend the ball anyway. So what was Lindelof supposed to do?

Anyone mentioned the questionable if not downright bizarre decisions from Ole yet? Top of the pile, 3 goalkeepers on the bench. 3! Rashford looks knackered and wasn't needed at all. Bruno isn't super-human and will eventually exhaust. Wan-Bissaka must be getting there too even though he only played a half. Williams is barely getting a look-in (and shows in his rusty performance today) so no idea why he wasn't loaned out. Tuanzebe could've easily started at right-back, Mata instead of Bruno or play Greenwood deeper, chance for Galbraith instead of Fred, Diallo RWF. All in all, was a golden opportunity for at least a couple more youngsters to have started and so was a disappointing match both in terms of the lineup and the exhibition-like performance.

A perfectly reasonable comparison. Hell why did the ref even bother with the yellow card, Lindelof should have been led away for attempted murder there and then.

A game is putting to test what you have been doing in practice sessions.

Man City probably does more in terms of positioning play and tactics.

Or you can take a look at how Xavi’s Al Sadd team plays. His team’s highlights compared to OGS’s highlights. It doesnt just take better players to play that way; it takes a competent coaching staff to teach it.

I think our coaching staff are more than competent, what match have you exactly been watching? Easy to see the improvements in younger players and the highest scoring team in the league, I think you’ll eat humble pie before the season is done.

I might have fallen asleep too many times this season watching us play.

All good if you have different view.

I'd understand if lineloff given a retrospective ban for that jump and knee. You can do some serious damage there. He is lucky its not a 2-1 or close tied victory. They would have slaughtered the refereeing decision.

I agree. I was very scared when it happened. It could have caused a traumatic brain injury, loss of consciousness, or even worse.
