What I find interesting, and I never knew this before now, is the way that Maguire plays. He might play tomorrow.

I read what Graeme Sourness said about him and the way he works on the pitch. I thought he was speaking pish so I watched a few of his compilations on youtube and he's right. Half of his highlights are him playing in the opponents half, bringing the ball forward and creating chances from his pass.

He's essentially a pseudo-DM. Plus I never realised how much of a unit he is.

This was a pleasant surprise and gives me a bit more optimism moving forward. I don't know if he'll start tomorrow, and I'm predicting a 1-1, but I'm excited to see what he can do.

Win lose or draw, I just want to see us playing like a team and not like the utter shite at the end of last season.

I hope we can pull out a result and a good performance.... it feels like we need some positivity and confidence

we will definitely play 4 at the back - we have all Summer. I hope Matic doesn't play but I fear Solskjaer will give players an opportunity

    -------------------------DDG------------------------
    AWB-------Victor-------Harry--------Shaw
    ‐------‐-----------McTom---Pogba-------------
    Greenwood---------Lingard-------Rashford
    -----------------------Martial--------------------------

obviously fluid between Rashford/Martial. I think Greenwood will have earned the start. I can see him putting Lingard on Jorginho.

    1 nil United

Did Ole say Matic and McTominay were doubtful?

Im drunk as deck bu qe qill annihiliate cyelsea go greenfoed and rashwood All Will go åerfect we Will pummrl him

Well the time for moaning and for us disagreeing with each other is over.

Let’s get behind the team with a positive attitude.

See you back here for a moan tomorrow.

    :) bwahaha

Let's play some proper attacking football and get back the club of old. This should be an exciting vibrant team and not a has been middle aged guys experimental project anymore

    My best guess is:

    De Gea
    AWB--Lindelof--Maguire--Shaw
    McTominay--Pogba
    James-Mata-Rashford
    Martial

I'd prefer Greenwood to Martial for a spell but I think Ole won't take that risk in game 1 and I'd prefer the following lineup the first time we have a lesser opponent:

    De Gea
    AWB--Lindelof--Maguire--Shaw
    Mctominay
    James Pogba
    Greenwood Rashford Gomes

I'd like to see this lineup at least for a game or 5 to see if the kids can get some momentum. The quality out of Greenwood and Gomes really impressed me even after watching probably a third of their youth team games last year. The were both very composed and purposeful on the ball this preseason. BUT, the Premier League is different than the preseason games for sure... BUT that's a pitch full of hard workers that could press and play fast. It'd be hard to keep up with these guys on the counter and with Pogba's vision and the other 4 running all over the pitch, I think we could put a lot of balls in the net.

I don't like 2 holding midfielders at all unless we play it really more like only 1 holding mid and just "sea-saw" attacking responsibility between the 2 midfielders..

He used to be a lot better. I feel like these days he pretty much just overlays Avengers trailer audio with United video and that's about it.
Yeah it's a shame he's gone that way, his individual player tributes were amazing.

I thought this was a lunch time kick-off, thankfully it's 16:30 so I've got an excuse not to watch as I have family stuff. I'll go 0-0 as they've got no striker and we've got 2 who fail us more often than not and no midfield. I'm not going to bother guessing at a team as beyond GK, the back 4 and Pogba it doesn't matter, the rest are interchangeable mediocrity.

Wow - wonder how you will watch this season if you are already thankful that you are missing the first game!

I'm super excited by this game. Our first team looks good, and we have a new playing style. Looking forward to seeing how the team has changed over the preseason. Are we going to make average players look better than the sum of their parts (like the SAF years) or make the sum look worse than the parts (Jose years!).

If our squad performs at par, then we get into top 4. Don't see how you don't even want to watch a game to educate yourself on this, but you'll come on here to moan if the result is anything but a 3-0.

Their back 4 is going to be torn to shreds. They’re going to have to rely on Pulisic creating something magical but then again Harry ‘Feck off’ Maguire at the back that’s not going to be too easy.

I’m seeing a nasty 3/4-0 win for united here

As much as it pains me, I think we'll see Mata instead of Greenwood and Matic instead of McTom.

Hopefully Mata won't start today and I'm not sure on Matic too. With them in the team we will lack pace and also ability to press, which was clear when we played against Milan.

This is correct, but Matic seems undroppable. A piece of my soul withers and dies everytime I see his mug appear on that lineup/moody arms crossed pose picture that comes up pre-game

Yeah. For some reason he plays many games and I feel he slows down everything. When players like Pogba slows down the game they see bigger picture to create chances. When Matic slows down he just plays simple passes.

If we play 4-2-3-1 then hopefully it's McTominay alongside Pogba.

Imagine they were injured for a minute. Negligent not to bring at least one midfielder in.

Imagine 20 players were injured- negligent not to have a second squad!

Come on those are 3 midfielders, it's a crisis if all 3 get injured. And in that case, we will have a highly rated Garner who can play a few games. Not ideal but it's a crisis, not an every day occurence!

Let's hope not. Don't see Mata getting into this one, but Matic could.

Will be very surprised if Ole, who is gambling a lot this season with a number of ifs in his squad, takes the most conservative approach to start the season.

I think he could start James as we will have lots of chances to counter attack. If pogba has the speed of Martial, Rashford, and James to hit consistently in the game - it will make us very dangerous!

    Let smash them 5-1.
2 by Maguire, 1 James, and 2 Greenwood.

You can just rearrange that. Lingard on the right, Pogba Central and one of Rashford/Martial on the left.
Fair enough but I think he wants to play Pogba as one of the two in midfield and i'm hopeful that a fit Pogba and McTominay will keep Matic out of the side.I'm hoping he gives Gomes his debut in behind Martial.

Actually it won't be his debut will it:lol:

I’d be pretty surprised if it was anything else

3 things in life are guaranteed:

Death, taxes, Fred not starting against Chelsea

I feel like we are going to be pummeled by chelsea and Redcafe is going to be horrible until next week.

Are they shorter memories than the ones saying put him in a midfield 2?

No. He has only ever performed as part of a 3 man midfield. (AFAIK).

Always ahead of the play and gets frustrated at No 10.

Quickly pressurised and isolated in midfield two.
