Burnley Football Club (nicknamed The Clarets), is a professional association football club based in Burnley, Lancashire. On 18 May 1882, The club was founded on On 18 May 1882, when Burnley Rovers Football Club decided to shift their allegiance from rugby union to football. Playing in various green or blue and white kits for their first few years, the club played their first competitive game in October 1882 against Astley Bridge in the Lancashire Challenge Cup, that game ending in an 8–0 defeat. In the early months of 1883 the club moved to Turf Moor and remain there, only their Lancashire rivals Preston North End having occupied the same ground continuously for longer. Burnley first appeared in the FA Cup in 1885–86 but were ignominiously beaten 11–0 when eligibility restrictions meant that their reserve side had to be fielded against Darwen Old Wanderers. On 13 October 1886, Turf Moor became the first ground to be visited by a member of a (British) Royal Family. When it was decided to found the Football League for the 1888–89 season, Burnley were among the 12 founders of that competition.

The club enjoyed its Golden days as one of the most progressive clubs around in the 1950s to the early 1970s under the reign of chairman Bob Lord. They were one of the first teams to build a training ground next to the stadium, while every other team still trained in their own stadium, and the Turf Moor club used innovative training methods. Among other things, this resulted in an excellent youth team. Nearly all members of the 1959–60 Division 1 winning team had played in the Burnley youth team. Lord also pioneered the short-lived 'Football Specials'. The Clarets were also the first to let a manager decide about the transfer policy. After the 1959–60 title winning season finished, Burnley went to the United States to participate in the inaugural international football tournament in North-America, the International Soccer League. The following season Burnley played in European competition for the first time. Burnley's biggest traditional rivals are Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers with the match between Burnley and Blackburn sometimes called The Cotton Mills Derby. Burnley play their home games at Turf Moor.

Expect to see the Varane-Martinez centre back pairing.

Yay!! Will be weird going right back to United.

Guessing as it's league Cup, we'll try to avoid playing anyone that made the quarter finals or later. They probably all had 1 week off and then would have half a week training.

    De Gea
    Wan Bissaka Lindelof Maguire Malacia
    McTominay Eriksen
    Elanga Van de Beek Garnacho
    Martial

Since England have been out for a good few days, it won't seem overly weird that united are back.

Really want to win this cup, hopefully smash Burnley.

This would probably be it, with Casemiro, Antony and Bruno to come on if needed.

Not expecting much. ETH already expressed his discontent with latest performances. Hopefully we'll squeeze one goal and defense will hold, then one week to pick up the pieces and gel more players returning into one again.

I'm so ready to return to club football. Doubt we will see many of the World Cup players who made it out of the groups, maybe just Maguire. Big struggle this one, but a good warm up.

They might be top of the league, but I fancy our chances. We should be able to knock them off their fecking perch.

Maguire was a starter at the World Cup too but i assume that you put him in the team since he isnt a starter for Manchester United?

Good game for Malacia to get some match sharpness after van Gaal didnt use him for a single minute.... Maybe Antony and/or Fred could start too since they didnt play that much during the World Cup either. Maybe that is wishfull thinking because i dont think really like to see Donny and Elanga playing. Restore the (in)famous McFred duo with Eriksen at 10.

We need to win the 2 first games at a minimum. Half the squad will be depressed by the WC results. Luckily Varane or Licha won disrupt the dressing room as it happened 4 years ago.

Gonna be a tough one, this. They're in good form, and already back to competitive football. We will still be full of cobwebs. Hopefully we get through. I want the trophy.

Nailed on Burnley win. We'll have a second team out against their strongest and they are match fit.

    Shame

More because we have no other center back! Varane and Martinez won't be available, and then the other players we have are Lindelof and Maguire.

Any result wouldn't surprise me here tbh.

United could restart with a few heavy defeats and it wouldn't shock me...lets just hope for the best!

They better come out guns blazing, us who have skipped the WC need to have something to cheer for.

They're playing Middlesbrough in the Championship tomorrow afternoon at 3, available on Sky Red Button but I suspect everyone will be watching Morocco vs Croatia instead.

Boro is of course managed by by one of our own, Michael Carrick.

They’ve not lost at home this season, Boro very good away recently… score draw?

Hopefully a tough game that takes the legs out of them. Hard to tell what team we put out, arguably the likes of Rashford should be starting considering his lack of minutes in the WC. Ten Hag mentioned once the World Cup is done it’s back to business.

I would hope/expect that some players get a slightly extended break but come back for the Premier League game (Rashford, Dalot, Shaw, Bruno, and Casemiro in particular). I get the feeling EtH might just bring back Varane and Martinez for the game against Forest on the 27th, but maybe he will let them off until the 31st against Wolves.

I really think some players should be guaranteed starters here such as Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, McTominay, Eriksen, Van de Beek, and Martial. Toss a coin between de Gea and Dubravka. Could see Wan-Bissaka, but if he is going to be let go in January it might not be worth risking injury. Since the alternative is most likely playing Dalot or Shaw, I'd rather we just use AWB. Garnacho probably starts, but I'm a bit unsure in the right side. Maybe Elanga depending on who is back in time for training. I wish Sancho was ready but that seems unlikely as well.

Don't see Rapha and Licha until Wolves, even then I see them starting on the bench

Yesterday, they managed to beat our former manager who had an unbeaten record with us. Boro even took the lead, but ended up losing 3 - 1. The message to us was clear: "You're next."

Burnley are going great guns top of the champs and no doubt would love to give us a knock.
Hopefully we've got a good idea on who from the world cup can slot straight in and we've kept others in good nick.

The good thing is that Lisandro can start. He was basically on vacation.

    ..................... De Gea

    Bissaka - Lindelöf - Maguire - Shaw

    ..... McTominay - Zidane - Eriksen

    ... Rashford - Martial - Garnacho
