Come on dude, that's just mental - you need to know the basics before being thrown in at the deep end. They need to be taught the basics of pressing, triggers, etc, and get that drilled in training first.
You don't learn CPR on the job as a paramedic, nor do you learn to shoot on the job as a soldier - training is about learning and drilling these things so you get it right when it matters. Football is exactly the same.
