really good half...controlled the game but definitely still a lot left to do given just the one goal lead and how they are set up to counter quickly in 2v2

really difficult to play against this 442 setup where they let the cb's have the ball and are so compact with that high line....they basically dare you to play over the top and push numbers into the attack just so they can counter if they win the second ball

Match stats don't lie United much the better side but frustrating it's not more than 1-0. Hopefully a poor 2nd half doesn't follow. I believe Villa have scored at least 1 goal in every game since Emery has arrived so United will probably need another goal 2nd half.

Decent game by us. GK Martinez is annoyingly decent at anticipating and committing to clearing throughballs though, which allows them to play fairly high line -wish De Gea had more of this, even if they're not especially different when it comes to passing out...

Our pass selection and decision making in the final 3rd is quite poor. Other than that, pretty good half. Should've been at least 2-0 up

Watching this game just confirms how much I hate playing a high line. Villa look so vulnerable. We just have to release the ball a little sooner (I'm looking at you Sancho) and play it through on an angle and we could score in bunches.

Could we please have a full 90 minutes of playing well and not falling apart? Just this once?

Haaland is a striker. We are playing a winger hoping he will become a striker. Buying an actual striker would be a good idea.,
He is a striker, sure, but it's worth a mention that it was a penalty. Rashford's reasonably good at those, too.

Incoming 2nd half team in sleep mode again. Almost sure of it.

Malacia much better today, he had a couple of bad games . Good to see him return to form

It's so weird how different we are home vs away. Hopefully we keep it up in the 2nd but generally we dominate very well at Old Trafford

Good half. The tactic of having three ball players (Bruno, Casemiro, Eriksen) ping balls to three runners (Rashford, Sabitzer, Sancho) has worked well, even if the timing has been a miss. If we had any cutting edge we'd be clear but that's been the story of the season.

The good thing about the goal is that now Villa have to continue to play higher and will lead to more chances for us. The bad thing is that it means they will press more and we all saw what happened at Spurs. Really hope the lads keep their heads and don't feck it up.

Shoutout to Malacia who has done really well after two horrible games. Also, Casemiro looks to be back at his best.

Deservedly ahead but should be up by a few more if we knew how to take our chances.

Overall good performance, just need to be better in the final 3rd.

I just feel that we have not been ruthless enough in our finishing and give our opponent the chance and belief to come back.
Look at the error from Mings, most of the top teams would have capitalised on such chance and scored but we just messed that up somehow. No excuse in not troubling the keeper at all when you are 3 up against 2. That's criminal.
There is really no point in pressing intensely when you don't capitalise properly on opponents' forced mistakes.
Pray that Villa won't get lucky to have a come back and make us pay for not being ruthless enough.

This second half is sure to go the way of many others. One goal is not enough, two wasn’t v Spurs. Still see a draw incoming unless we change this habit we have of bottling games.

It could be a good idea to put on Antony or Martial for Sancho at half time

When you look at this half and add to this team first choice defensive pair and world class striker, future looks very positive.
Yeah if only we could make any oppo team play as suicidal as Villa every week. We'd be the best in the world.

Goal came from them hitting the ball into Casemiros head and then Rashfords can use his pace, shoots from a low xG angle and the deflection is then hit into goal by Bruno (credit where credit is due, probably pretty difficult to do against a defender that close).

I liked the intensity and long balls surely make sense against such a high line but I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from it...

Mentally prep ourselves for another hero to zero second half team performance.

The tactic is clear and there's plenty of space in behind that Villa line. But I wish we would play that extra pass a bit more often and be a bit more measured. We don't have to hit the long ball EVERY time.

We created 3 clear chances before that and had possession. What game ate you watching.
If we have chance for counter we do it. If we don't, we play around. That is the way.

Especially if Villa rethink that high line. Our inability to kick on in these games means they always end up as nail biters even when playing well.
