This idea of overplayed links to the common rhetoric of burn out associated with young players, but alas, players under the age of 21 are less likely to burn out due to their relative age, natural fitness and metabolic state. This is why teenagers can weight train in the gym 6 days a week without issues relating to recovery, whereas, twenty-something's are more prone to burn out with the same intensity.

Now, if you're purely talking about mental protection of the young player, you may have a point, but even then mental strength isn't any more guaranteed in a 22 year old than in an 18 year old. At least, not uniformly.
