Biggest positive for today was the defensive display. Thought we were solid all night, only villa i know but thought all of them played well at the back. Darmian again looks a natural full back. Shaw adventured forward quite well at times. And Schweinsteiger looked so good with his passing and control of the midfield when he came in. Patrolling around. Loved it.

Solid at the back makes me smile and everyone screaming for a central defender looks like we need Pedro but as a Striker not in the hole … we need a finisher. Makes you wonder whatever happened to RvP and Welbeck … or why wasn't Adnan left on, or why wasn't Chicherito brought on, or why wasn't Pereira even in the squad???

I thought that was a very similar performance to last week's game against Spurs. Solid, unspectacular but clinical.

God, crap game, lucky result, won't be going anywhere this season. Be lucky to finish in the top half. We need a whole new squad plus another whole new squad just in case the first new squad gets injured or is crap. Get LVG out and replace with Mourinho. Rooney is shit, Memphis is shit, get rid of Mata, Darmian is the only one who should be there. I can't take watching this crap anymore, I'm going off to support Barca.

Nah, but seriously it wasn't an inspiring result but was nonetheless a win which is important at this stage of the season. It's good to get a winning routine going but I hope we start being a lot more adventurous and exciting as the season goes on. For now, I guess I'll take 6 points from 6.

If we continue to play like this, luck will dry out pretty soon.

Or, just maybe, this could be a good starting block. You know, looking tight at the back to build our foundation and then improve on our attacking play with a new formation and personal. You are right though, two clean sheets in a row is nothing but luck and Spurs and Villa should've turned us over and we've been lucky.

From what everyone has said at least Mata contribute creatively. Rooney is a spent force.

Mata did try, but he lost possession with wasteful passes. Unfair to probably label him as bad as Rooney, Rooney was diabolical. Didnt put in a shift or look like he gave a shit. Main striker and didn't have one effort, not even a bobbler that went for a throw.

Why didn't villa play that tall unplayable striker? He would have destroyed our defence.

januzaj stopped pressing after the goal. Don't know if he was tired or thought it was over. I thought that was justified. Wellbeck couldn't in a taiwanese whorehouse so that story we should just drop. I agree on the defense though :)

Game went exactly as I predicted - narrow 1-0 and not creating a lot - the brightest thing was the back four not making Romero have to save our arses again :)

    Positives:

    Adnan's goal
Darmian and Captain Morgan excellent again
    Smalling, Blind and Shaw good

    Negatives:

Rooney - how he has the nuts to pick up £300k for that is amazing
Memphis - really shouldn't have been given the 7 shirt until he'd proven himself
Mata - probably his worst all round game - one assist though and should have had a second

More boring football - it has to get better than this

Where have I said that it was "nothing but luck"? We are much better defensively than last season bar Blind, but there are still a lot of holes that can be exploited for my liking.

Well at least when we start playing well, we won't be 10 points behind the leaders ! But please, please, please LvG has to stop persisting with Rooney as the undroppable player !

For those saying we were lucky obviously didn't watch the game! We weren't lucky, we were solid and efficient. We played in little bursts.

OK it wasn't pretty on the eye and yeah it would be nice to play well too but let's not talk rubbish.

People who think we are lucky are crazy. Villa didn't even have a decent shot on goal.

Had the Memphis chance gone in, the narrative would have been completely different. Something like "clinical display, getting better with every game...."

I think Morgan had a good game.
Memphis has a lot of potential. Average but I sense he'll be great for us, few good runs, was really active and lively.
I thought Morgan wasn't great for large parts but mainly due to the fact the combination with Carrick isn't great. Was better after Schweini came on I felt.

Agree with your take on Memphis, I think he'll make it big time but was only speaking about tonight.

I'll be honest I'm actually feeling very good after that performance. I thought defensively we were absolutely superb and I think we looked so much better as a defensive unit. Darmian is playing out of his skin, Smalling is finally stepping into vidics shoes and blind is giving the defensive that composure that we have been lacking for awhile now. Add to this that shaw without injuries is like a new signing and schneiderlin offers true midfield protection which is a pleasure to see. I strongly believe that a defensive performance like that would not have been possible last year and in that regard we have made strides.

In terms of our attacking play, Rooney was worryingly poor and we still didn't really click. That being said I believe that there was some real glimpses, 10 minutes here and there, where we moved the ball quick, efficient and accurate and actually looked like a very good team. I thought Depay was a real threat and has added a certain flair that we have missed for awhile, although he clearly wasn't at his best and can improve. Herrera just confirmed that he needs to start with his performance off the bench as he just adds energy and creativity that nobody else in the side provides.

I can fully understand those who thought that performance was poor but I'm feeling extreamly happy in the knowledge we can put out a solid defensive showing and still go and get all the points. We didn't play like classic Utd and that might be the issue but I still firmly believe that as the season progresses we may finally unleash the true potential of this side.

Yeah Morgan was better with Schweini. They look like a better combination than him with Carrick.

    Exactly. Never looked like conceding.
